Ginn
Does any one know of any melancholy coming of age songs? Not nostalgic, happy ones but kind of dreary regretful ones?
Shawna
hmmmm... I can think of a bunch that mention times about being at that age... can you clarify what you want? Do you want something specifically about the experiences of being a teenager? Of finding out what life is really all about? Of being afraid to step into the great wide open? Sorry so many questions...
LeeBB
At Seventeen - Janis Ian I Was Only Nineteen - Redgum, although this is not so much about coming of age as about the general of war. Definitely about loss of innocence, though. Lbbbb Edited February 25, 2009 by Guest

Uncle Joe
A song written and sung by Joni Mitchell may interest you. It's The Circle Game . She once said that she wrote this for Neil Young. Not for him to sing...but for him. Maybe not regretful but certainly melancholy to the max. Here are the lyrics: Yesterday a child came out to wonder Caught a dragonfly inside a jar Fearful when the sky was full of thunder And tearful at the falling of a star Then the child moved ten times round the seasons Skated over ten clear frozen streams Words like, when youre older, must appease him And promises of someday make his dreams And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down Were captive on the carousel of time We cant return we can only look behind From where we came And go round and round and round In the circle game Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town And they tell him, Take your time, it wont be long now Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down Were captive on the carousel of time We cant return we can only look behind From where we came And go round and round and round In the circle game So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true Therell be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty Before the last revolving year is through And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down Were captive on the carousel of time We cant return, we can only look behind From where we came And go round and round and round In the circle game

Charlie Clown
Tender Years - John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown The End Of The Innocence -Don Henley My Back Pages - Bob Dylan Hope these were what you were wanting. Those were the ones that came to my mind. At Seventeen was already there but it was one I would have added I was thinking of two absolue gems by the Byrds, one of which is My Back Pages and the other Goin' Back (a Carole King song). Two of the greatest renditions of two of the greatest songs.

Batman
I wouldn't call it dreary, but "Ooh La La" by the Faces has regretfull lyrics: "I wish that I knew what I know now when I was younger" is the chorus
