  1. Well, I've finally worked out after 20 odd years, the chords to this song...and it's one of the saddest songs I know...allusive, oblique, beautiful...none of this heart twanging country crap...it makes you work out for yourself what it means...doesn't lay it out on a plate...and it's definitely about a death foretold...enjoy! Pink Moon (Nick Drake) It's definitely a 'ye' not a 'you'....all adds to the mystery!
  2. I was introduced to the site by a seasoned songfactor who has since left. I have left a couple of times too....but the pull of the tide and an opportunity to be a smart-arse keeps drawing me back...I'm sure it's not healthy
  3. '~' is just above the # on my keyboard.
  4. Deffo...Obscured by Clouds...followed quickly by Relics...'cos it was cheap....and had some great music on it. (I was poor...a student at the time...cheap was good!)
  5. No....almost the opposite...the sex pistols were what they were because they beautifully perfected the 'art' of being exactly on the 'cusp' between the musical and the un-musical...for a while...they did guitar solos (remember?) but they were short and shite...they did 'riffs' (but they were short and simple...as opposed to long and 'hard' qv 'Led Zeppelin') They did melodies...but they were short, hummabble, but un-harmonised...any fool could repeat them....ooo, errrr, 'urry up 'arry....any fool did.!
  6. I think we may have stumbled upon the 'crux of the biscuit' (that's French for 'twice cooked...by-the-way) as Zappa definitely said...'Punk' was meant to have thrown all previous musical life-forms into the bin...and, indeed, many of the offerings of the punk genre did do that...but, unfortunately for them, memetics, (look it up) ensures that anything 'un-musical'...i.e. 'unfit'is destined to eventually die....all that will survive is certain to have a 'melodic' content...hence the survival of the Sex Pistols and the Buzcocks...against their less melodic rivals
  7. Bring the Family is a wonderful album by John Hiatt...saw him last year...fantastic songwriter with a huge catalogue of hummable tunes, some of them even a bit challenging...try humming a 'punk' tune and you'll soon realise the difference between 'music' and 'sounds'...the moment you can hum the melody...it stops being 'punk'
  8. Joan Baez did a rather good rendition...but it was, indeed, the Dietrich version that I remember so well.
  9. I think I did try to warn you...but you still like a good mass debate Honest...it'll make you go blind.
  10. P.S. I was raised on this song...heeeavy duty sad.
  11. Ah, It remember it well...the older I get, the better I was... 'Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, But to be young was very heaven!--Oh! times, In which the meagre, stale, forbidding ways Of custom, law, and statute, took at once'
  12. Aaaah! The rock'n'roll lifestyle...I quite fancy working out with a young dancer tomorrow...how do I arrange that?
  13. Yeah, and she's 'sex on a stick' too....which doesn't hurt. JMHO
  14. From what I can tell...knowing some insiders...it's basically because she is a gold digging barm pot psychopath and he is an idiot geriatric with more money than sense who was seduced by the temptation of a comely monoped...but hey, Whadda I know?
  15. BF...I notice that you edited the above to 'Add extra sentence'...and I was rather hoping we'd all get time off for good behaviour Just drop it will ya...the guy's an oaf!
  16. The riff's terriff...but totally non-standard tuning (if I remember it well)...nowhere near the same if you flail about in standard tuning...might just be the precursor riff to the grungers and metaller's predillection for dropped 'D's and five and six stringed bass....? JMHO
  17. I think that this is where these threads lose the plot....imagine you HAD TO...you've got only one choice and you've gotta go for it...you can't just sit there and say ''I just can't do it'.....would you let ALL your kids die rather than save one?....not a very sensible decision...you've gotta go for it! Otherwise, what's the point?
  18. With sufficient lubricant and a firm stance...I can take you any day BF.
  19. It might be better to start a thread along the lines of...'if you could only ever listen to one band ever again...who would it be?' I guarantee...if it was Mudvane you'd go completely mad with boredom and despair....oddly enough, personally, U2 would do the same to me....Radiohead I could probably stomach for a while (perhaps a goodly while)....but, just think about it....forever, forever, forever ....aaaaaargh!!
  20. Possibly the best 'touche' I've ever seen! It would, of course, be a much better compliment if I could figure out how to do an accent on the 'e'...but hey!
  21. Check them out....any lovers of chiming guitars, soaring vocals and simple harmonies done in a quintessentially British way.... For some reason their site tries to load both their new single and old single simultaneously (well, it does on my pc). Just 'stop' their mp3 player and scroll down to see a full version of the latest song (Black and White) with video...leave it running....great voice! JMHO http://www.myspace.com/theupperroomspace You can see their earlier videos too...I recommend All Over This Town. Good videos all round. God, I love a soaring harmony!
  22. Great link Das...I'd forgotten how good we were...seems the older I get the better I was. I'm off again for a while...tried to do someone a favour and got misinterpreted and misrepresented and generally, I cocked up again... Keep it real for JG
  23. I supported a much loved and now sadly missed songfacts colleague... Oooops!
  24. I think this was just a lame attempt to smoke you out....or didn't you already say that?
