  1. I had always kind of liked them; when I was about 12 I blasted my dad's "Led Zeppelin II" record in my room, and he yelled at me. I responded with "But it's your record?". That didn't work. Anyhoo, my first year in college I bought "Houses Of The Holy" and played it every single day after class. That and "Nevermind" by Nirvana, so what, 1992? I still like "Houses" the best as a complete album, compared to "Physical Graffiti" and some others, which have a few songs I don't get into. But from the opening song, "The Song Remains The Same", on through the end I still love it. "The Rain Song" and "No Quarter" are my favorites. So I guess my phase is about 15 years and counting.
  2. "O Canada, our home and native land. Something, something, something else. ...thee." And that's off the top of my head.
  3. Edna, if you can find it, you should check out the demo/bootleg thing Paul did with Elvis Costello. I believe it's called "The McCartney/McManus Tapes" or something similar. It's got "McCartney" and "McManus" (EC's given name) in it, anyway. I think it's from around the time Paul did "Flowers In The Dirt" and Elvis did "Spike", and they co-wrote a handful of great songs. "Veronica", of course, was on Elvis' album. "My Brave Face" was on Paul's. But the versions on this bootleg are all pretty much two guys with acoustic guitars - fantastic, lo-fi stuff. "Tommy's Coming Home" and "Mistress & Maid" are my favorites, though the acoustic "Veronica" is 1000 times better, I think, than the single version. Anyhoo, Paul hasn't sounded so inspired before (solo years only, of course) or after. And Elvis is, well, Elvis. Sorry this isn't really related to the topic, but it's something good for non-fans of solo Paul to check out. Oh, and my favorite Beatle is John. I think solo-wise, though, that George put out a record lights years above any of the other three, with "All Things Must Pass".
  4. Isn't the tune of the "Star Spangled Banner" lifted from a traditional drinking song? That would explain a lot of things. I personally like "O Canada", especially when sung by Sarah McLachlan. Can't remember where or when I heard her do it, though. And, of course, I'll always be fond of the French anthem because of the intro to "All You Need Is Love".
  5. I didn't mean to slight to other members of the group - I just don't really know much about ELO. I keep meaning to learn more, as I really think some of their stuff is amazing, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I thought about looking into concert tickets recently, but I think that whole reunion tour got scrapped due to lackluster ticket sales. Isn't that depressing? I guess for a band to stick around for 30+ years (see the Stones, McCartney) you really need a charismatic personality in there somewhere. Jeff Lynne has never seemed very "interesting", I guess. I personally like that, because it really doesn't make a difference if the music's great. Anyhoo, tangent over.
  6. Has anyone mentioned James Taylor? He's one of the best acoustic guitar players to have ever lived, in my opinion. Absolutely flawless.
  7. I think they were pretty much Jeff Lynne and a backing group. From what I know, he wrote, arranged, sang and produced everything. And he was pretty amazing at it as well. "Mr. Blue Sky" is just ridiculous, in terms of creativity. And just when you think it's over that last riff comes in and the key changes. I believe he also wrote most of The Traveling Wilburys stuff, or at least the big hits. Pretty good when you're in a band with Dylan, Petty and Harrison.

    Lost

OK, I don't care what anyone else tells me - this is still the best show on tv. Last night was proof that these writers are absolute masters of storytelling. The whole ending scene (especially with Rose) turned me into a quivery girl. It's kind of hard to speak about this show without giving anything away...

  10. Amboy Dukes - Journey To The Center Of The Mind I personally can't stand Ted Nugent musically, but he needs a talk show. The same goes for Kid Rock.
  11. I pray to god that he answers emergency calls in his spandex unitard.
  12. They used #3 on Seinfeld once. Awesome, but I've never had the balls to try it. There's a guy (his name escapes me) who has albums of creative ways he's talked to telemarketers. The only one I can remember was when he talked about how stupid his kid was, and he kept yelling over the phone and asking the caller what he thought he should do about his kid. Pretty funny.
  13. What a way to go out. Someone post a good one in her stead, please.
  14. Ok, this game is hanging by a thread. This person was affiliated with Motown, but most definitely didn't sing "You Keep Me Hangin' On", "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" or "You've Really Got A Hold On Me". He may, however, have sang "Too High".
  15. I do too, actually, so I think it's within my rights to make a joke. Though maybe not that particular one.
  16. No, not a hint. Peaches needs to learn her Badfinger history. And I need to not be so callous, I suppose.
  17. It didn't. I couldn't leave the body blank, so I clicked on a random smilie. Oh wait. I mean because you're funnier than I'll ever be.
  18. OK, along the same lines, but I don't have a whole lot of brain power right now. So this may be too easy. What legendary singer spent time in a coma after a car wreck, allegedly coming out of it when his own music was played to him?
  19. Listen to "May This Be Love" by Jimi Hendrix. I can't remember the exact panning of the individual instruments, but halfway through the song everything that was right goes to the left, and vice versa. Awesome.
