  1. I have to pick John Lennon. And I didn't really pick a favorite Beatle until I was in the 5th grade. I loved them and my Aunt gave me her albums, but I didn't have a fav, until my one friend, Martha took me to her house and they had a music room, her brother and her played all different instruments, anyway, her brother was 17 and totally into the Beatles. And on this day he played Beatle albums for us and talked about the songs, the group, and read us liner notes. He then went on to talk about the differences between Paul and John. And he favored John, and by the time I went home later that day I favored John too. He was the one who spoke out and said what he wanted and he didn't do it to impress anyone. That is what we all should do. So I thank my friend Martha's brother John for showing me the Beatles were more than just a group, they were individuals.

  9. Wasn't sure if this is where to post Carolyne Mas but she definately isn't mainstream. Here is a review of her debut album of which I have and just found again last night looking through my albums.... JULY 1979: Carolyne's self-titled debut album is released on Mercury Records. The sound is polished and the cover shows her in classy tophat, jacket and a bath robe belt as a tie--and Carolyne later tells the RALEIGH, NC NEWS AND OBSERVER: "That picture was taken in my bathroom and I was wearing unbelievably ripped-up pants. That all got cropped out." There are full-page ads in BILLBOARD ("She gives street-smart rock 'n' roll and new elegance.") And ROLLING STONE ("She's street elegant.") Much of the album's press coverage includes other women with new albums, often with terribly sexist headlines like THE VILLAGE VOICE: "They're Cute, but Can They Sing?" ROLLING STONE, who extends the Springsteen comparison to Ellens Foley and Shipley: "Boss ladies? Three women who don't Bruce easily." Even MUSICIAN: "Rockettes," though Carolyne is singled out with high praise from their Vic Garbarini: "Mas is the most talented and compelling American singer-songwriter to emerge since Bruce Springsteen, and this is her 'Born To Run.' She pumps more heart and soul into her superbly crafted three-minute pop anthems than anybody I've heard in years." And though TIME's headline is: "Chick Singers Need Not Apply," at least their Jay Cocks makes a refreshing new male comparison: "Mas' songs vary from reveries to roughhouse declamations without missing a beat, and if she keeps up this pace she may be dogging Randy Newman's tracks in a few years." HIGH FIDELITY gives Carolyne's album a full page to itself, their Steven Rea praising her "Sheer Moxie" and comparing her ballads to Patti Smith, Barbra Streisand, and Carly Simon; then ending with: "The world needs more rock & rollers like her." I forgot how she can rock...I saw her twice at the Cleveland Agora in the late 70's. Check her out www.carolynemas.com She has been through bad times, being totally broke and now back on her feet with a new album. I need to go through my albums more often.
  10. Sorry Laurie...didn't mean to mention again...I have been reading so many threads...
  11. Lindsey Buckingham...if you have seen Fleetwood Mac live you know what mean...people forget about him.
  12. Music my Dad would listen to and even though I was into rock it was his music and he shared it with me which meant a lot... Judy Garland Benny Goodman Frank Sinatra Judy could bring a tear to my Dad so I knew then he felt music like I did, I never felt closer to him.
  13. Not sure is this was mentioned and if so...sorry don't mean to mention again...but what about Heart's Crazy On You...you know it is them with that great acoustic guitar.
  14. Edna...you need to talk to my friend here at work...he has like 10,000 45's....I think about 800 albums...he is sooooo into collecting...I keep telling him to join Songfacts...he is afraid he will get addicted...LOL!
  15. A good friend I have here at work in music collector...he collects everything from 45's to memorbilia. He and I were talking about how we miss albums, ok CD's have great sound, but remember buying and album, getting home and pulling out the sleeve hoping for a picture and or lyrics...reading all the liner notes? Sure CD's come with the booklet sleeve but there is just something about an album, it has more character. I still from time to time pull one out and play it, sure it sounds scratchy but I can remember how it got those scratches from playing it over and over, and how the cover looks worn...albums are like friends, they age with you and may look worn but you don't see the wrinkles and lines. So what do you all think?
  16. Marc....she is a cutie!! How old is she? Mine is 21 months and on the go...making this old Mommy older every day!!
  17. Eric Clapton's memoirs, one of the most sought-after manuscripts in publishing history, will be released by Doubleday in 2007. Financial term were not disclosed, although Clapton was believed to seeking a multimillion-dollar contract and numerous publishers were interested. According to Doubleday, "Clapton will write frankly about every aspect of his personal and musical odyssey, addressing everthing that is known about his life as well as much that is not." The book, currently untitled, will be released to coincide with a North American tour and the release of a Clapton boxed set.
  18. We were just talking here at work about last nights episode and we all agree, like all of you it was a great episode to be watching. We are trying to recruit more people here at work to watch...I think last nights show would get some hooked who hadn't watched before.
  19. Tom Petty To Receive Billboard's Century Award By Melinda Newman, L.A. Tom Petty presented the inaugural Billboard Century Award in 1992 to George Harrison. Now it is Petty's turn to receive the honor. The Century Award, Billboard's highest honor for creative achievement, will be presented to Petty Dec. 6 during the Billboard Music Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The awards will be telecast live on Fox. "Tom Petty is one of the true great singer/songwriters," Billboard co-executive editor Tamara Conniff says. "Petty's songs and lyrics go to the root of the American dream. For over 30 years, Petty has been a rock icon who continues to inspire new generations of artists. We are honored to present him with the 2005 Century Award." At 54, Petty shows no signs of slowing down. With his longtime band, the Heartbreakers, Petty just completed a North American tour, drawing more than 550,000 fans to the 36 shows reported to Billboard Boxscore. "This award comes at a particularly nice time as the Heartbreakers and I go into the 30th year of our career," Petty says. "I'm very honored that Billboard has acknowledged me with this award." Petty is wrapping up his third solo album, "Highway Companion," due in the spring. While sources say he has been in discussions with Sanctuary Records, there is no official word on a new label home. He has previously recorded for Shelter, Backstreet/MCA and Warner Bros. In the meantime, Petty has four songs in Cameron Crowe's new movie, "Elizabethtown," and on the accompanying soundtrack, which came out Sept. 13 via RCA. Influenced by '50s rock and the British bands of the '60s, Petty and the Heartbreakers crafted their own brand of rock'n'roll, generating such hits as "American Girl," "Breakdown," "Don't Do Me Like That," "Refugee," "The Waiting," "You Got Lucky" and "Don't Come Around Here No More." All told, the Heartbreakers' albums have sold more than 50 million copies worldwide, including their top-selling "Greatest Hits," which has been certified by the Recording Industry Association of America for U.S. shipments of more than 10 million units. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Petty, a four-time Grammy Award winner, has interspersed Heartbreakers projects with two well-received solo releases and a pair of albums with supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, which included his musical heroes Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. The Century Award was created by the late Billboard editor in chief Timothy White and former publisher Howard Lander. In addition to Harrison, it has been presented to Buddy Guy, Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana, Chet Atkins, James Taylor, Emmylou Harris, Randy Newman, John Mellencamp, Annie Lennox, Sting and Stevie Wonder.
