I've got to defend Fin on this one...

if beer usually lived together in a monogamous relationship, or if beer generally were coming in pairs, THEN I would think that "a couple" means two

since that's not the case - it's clear to me that "a couple" means "a few"

if I'd say "a couple of friends are coming over tonight" I wouldn't necessarily mean that it's only two of them either :P

It might be three AT A STRETCH, but once you go past four or five you're at 'a few'. To me 'a couple' is not necessarily 2.0, but in the vicinity of that number ranging from 1.5 to 2.5, maybe 3.

Exactly. It could be five and I'd still say a couple... it's like some or a few, it's just not 'a lot'.

the same way you distinguish between the two meanings of "couple" - context ;)

(seeing a guy you know with a girl you don't) "are these two a couple?" - "no - they're four" :laughing: ;)
