I've got to defend Fin on this one...

if beer usually lived together in a monogamous relationship, or if beer generally were coming in pairs, THEN I would think that "a couple" means two

since that's not the case - it's clear to me that "a couple" means "a few"

if I'd say "a couple of friends are coming over tonight" I wouldn't necessarily mean that it's only two of them either :P

Exactly. It could be five and I'd still say a couple... it's like some or a few, it's just not 'a lot'.
