  1. Thanks Ms. Sane. We'll get this in our next update.
  2. Here's another one we're trying to confirm: Song Name: Venice Queen Artist: Red Hot Chili Peppers Album: By The Way Date: 2002 SongFacts: This song was made for a friend/counciller of Anthonys that died of cancer.
  3. I know there's a Zep fan who can confirm this one. If it's true, do you know what songs he couldn't play?: Just before the Physical Grafitti tour, Jimmy Page slammed a door on his pinkie finger, breaking it. They went on with the tour but they had to drop many songs from their playlist because of this.
  4. AC stations still play "Makin' Me High" by Toni Braxton, and it is filthy: I?ll always think of you Inside of my private thoughts I can imagine you Touching my private parts With just the thought of you I can?t help but touch myself That?s why I want you so bad Sometimes I wonder if anyone actually thinks about the lyrics to these songs, or if most people let them float on by into the ether of Soft Rock background music. Is The Stroke really about what you're saying? Someone get Billy Squier on the line so we can ask him.
  5. I see websites all over the place that claim to have their own radio, and many have nothing to do with music. It must be getting easier to do this, but I still don't know how.

    New Server

We're planning to move some code around to make the boards faster on a consistent basis. Getting to the new server was the really big step, now it's going to take some adjustments on our end.

    Fever Pitch

As a savage Sox fan who thinks Jimmy Fallon is funny, I had high hopes for this movie. Here's the problem - there's not enough baseball in it. As a romantic comedy, it holds its own, but they didn't write in the greatest comeback in baseball history the way they should have. The shot of Drew and Jimmy celebrating on the field was real, but completely out of place with the story. It's clear they wrote the script expecting the Sox to lose, and could manage only a lame re-write when Papi and company took care of business. Also, a lot of shots in the commercials aren't in the movie, including the "Crying Shame" line.

    Before Sunrise

This movie came on HBO one night when I was about ready to go to bed. I couldn't stop watching. There are no special effects, very little drama, and very simple editing, but I couldn't take my eyes off it. This proves what good writing can do for a movie. The sequel is in my Netflix queue, but I have to get through Donnie Darko and Reanimator first.
  9. We put up a new forum called Music Discussion Classic. If you're interested in older music, which we're considering roughly pre-1980, this might be a good place to post. It's a way of taking a load off the Music Discussion forum by creating an area suited for topics that have nothing to do with music of today. There will still be plenty of talk about older music in the original Music Discussion forum, but this will give us another option.
  10. We'll hammer out some ground rules for this pretty soon, but the idea is to give people interested in older music (pre-1980) a place to post their thoughts. We put it up in response to some members who felt the Music Discussion forum dealt with music they didn't understand. This doesn't mean any posts regarding older music like Classic Rock need to be in here, it's just a place you can post if you're looking for an Avril/Nirvana/Britney free forum. The Music Discussion has gotten very popular, so it might make sense to spin this off - kind of like how All In The Family begat The Jeffersons.
  11. Can anyone confirm?: Song Name: Fun Fun Fun Artist: The Beach Boys SongFacts: This song actually originated in Utah. The Beach Boys were doing a concert at Lagoon which is a theme park in Farmington Utah, and they saw a young girl with her daddys T-bird which inspired them to write this song.
  12. It sounds like we need to put our subjects where they're easier to find. Maybe we can find a nice place on the home page for them.
  13. Both were sensational, and better as part of a team. Here are my thoughts: Lennon: Creative, Unpredictable, Fearless, Impulsive, Brilliant. McCartney: Lyrical, Reliable, Nostalgic, Legendary. I prefer Lennon. By the way, Lennon::Stevie Nicks, McCartney::Christine McVie
  14. We uploaded the database last night, which is much easier to do on this new server. We should have a newsletter out this week with a big list of additions, but here are a few: Happy Birthday - Stevie Wonder Dirty Deeds - AC/DC Where Is My Mind? - Pixies Simple Man - Skynyrd There's also some new info on some of the Tom Petty songs and great stuff on Rise and Hypnotize suppled by Randy Badazz Alpert.
  15. We haven't paid off our new server yet, but this program has potential. We put it on Artistfacts a few days ago, so we'll be able to give it a good evaluation. I'm going to ask that you guys don't go crazy with the clicks, only because it could be interpreted as fraud and get us kicked out of the program. It is very kind that you are willing to help us.

  17. 25 or 6 to 4 is one of the more interesting songs on Songfacts, and it gets a lot of hits. The only band I can think of that had such a hard swing from fantastic ("Beginnings") to craptastic ("Hard For Me To Say I'm Sorry") is Jefferson Airplane (listening to "White Rabbit" vs. "We Built This City" is like watching Ali fighting Foreman and then watching him fight Larry Holmes when he should have been home watching Matlock). A great disc to buy if you can find it is Chicago's Live At Carnegie Hall. Excellent stuff with the band near their peak. The Chicago/Earth, Wind and Fire tour is a good one. Sara and I saw it last summer and had a great time. If you see me walking by, and the tears are in my eyes... you know what to do.
  18. Hi All. This came from a real good contributor. Can anyone confirm? Song Name: All my Loving Artist: The Beatles SongFacts: This was the last song John Lennon ever heard. He was brought to the hospital, still alive, though barely so. The doctors worked hard to save him, but to no avail. As his life sign monitor went flat, this was playing over the loudspeaker in the hospital.
  19. I'm pretty sure this event had nothing to do with the song, but I wanted to check with you all just in case: Song Name: Sounds of Silence Artist: Simon and Garfunkel SongFacts: This song was written after Paul Simon read an article about a woman who was murdered in New York City in 1964. She was attacked by her killer and stabbed once near her apartment building, and the killer fled. Later she was in her building and still alive when he stabbed her a second time, where she proceeded to scream for help. He finally killed her with a third stabbing. Throughout the entire time 37 witnesses had seen her being attacked and had done nothing. It was only until a man in her building called the police, did they find out about her. When asked about why they had done nothing, people responding by saying "It was too late," "I went to bed" and "if you don't get out of my face, I'll push you done the stairs." It turned out that majority of the people were immigrants from Germany who had survived the Holocaust and the war, and had tried to speak up about what Nazis were doing to people, and were in turn thrown into concentration camps themselves. One person told police, "Last time I talked to the police about someone being murdered, it nearly cost me my life," Its the sound of silence.
  20. I have been puzzled for a while how that song keeps showing up on the list. I've even reset the list at odd times to see what would happen, and it still comes back. The best I can figure, there's either someone who really likes the song, or the search engines are picking up something in it that is driving tons of traffic. I might try taking out of the database for a few days just to get it off the list.
  21. When it comes to our holiday fish, Sara does some outstanding work. Google was probably doing it first, but the Songfish has been getting festive for some time now.
  22. As a Red Sox fan, I know better than to celebrate before the final out, but it fills me with joy to report that Songfacts is now on its own server. We started the process a few months ago when it became clear we would need our own machine to handle all the traffic the site was getting. It was a major investment in both time and money, and the last few months have been tough - the site was often slow, the boards didn't always work, and we couldn't update the database nearly as often as we wanted to. It was like being on a sinking ship while trying to get the new vessel ready for sail. Through it all, you guys have been very supportive, which means more than you can imagine when Sara and I are plugging away at computer code in the wee hours of the night. We had help from some great people at Digital Forest, where we've hosted Songfacts since we went online in 1999. Things are looking good as far as I can tell, but if you guys notice any problems, please bring them to our attention so we can fix any bugs we might not have caught. This deserves a banana. :happybanana:
  23. We're getting really close. You haven't lived until you've spent a weekend trying to figure out why your message boards aren't working on your new server.
  24. Mike from San Jose, CA The tiebreaker question asked how many days after Christmas we took down the Songfacts tree. Mike from San Jose was closest by far, with a guess of 64. We tend to leave the tree up until it starts shedding, and this one held its needles quite well. Here are the answers: What famous musician once changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol? - Prince What famous British band's first 3 albums had titles that were not in English? - The Police Outlandos D'Amour, Reggatta De Blanc, Zenyatta Mondatta What famous singer changed his name so he wouldn't be confused with a boxer? - Ray Charles He was born Ray Robinson, and changed to because of boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. What word is the last name of a '50s Soul singer, the first word of an '80s Rock band, the last word of a '60s Rock band and the title of a hit song? - Faith Percy Faith, Faith No More, Blind Faith, "Faith" by George Michael. I thought of this question after pulling up info on Percy Faith in our database by doing a search for "Faith." Guesses included: Domino, Rush, James, Green, Brown. What US #1 hit mentions James Dean in the lyrics? - "American Pie" by Don McLean Sometimes we'll throw out a question knowing there might be other valid answers. In this case, there were 2 others - "Jack And Diane" by John Mellencamp and "Rock On," which was a #1 hit when Michael Damien covered it. "Vogue" was awfully close, but Madonna says "Jimmy Dean," which is actually a maker of sausage. "We Didn't Start The Fire" also mentions James Dean, but it wasn't a #1 hit. What famous group's first single was a cover of a song originally recorded by Dutch group The Shocking Blue? - Nirvana Their first single was a cover of "Love Buzz." Just about everyone fell into the Bananarama trap (did you really think we'd use them 2 quizzes in a row?). Bananarama did a well known cover of "Venus," which is the most famous song by The Shocking Blue, but it wasn't their first single (I didn't check the discography, but I know "Cruel Summer" was earlier). This is one of those questions that you are much more likely to answer correctly if you were born after 1980. What hit from the '60s is about a boy with a girl's name? - "A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash What Beatles song has a title that was used for the name of a character in a popular 2000 movie? - "Penny Lane" Kate Hudson played a character of that name in Almost Famous. What song is about an Arab ruler who bans music, but is defied by his people who play it anyway? - "Rock The Casbah" by The Clash What popular song mentions catfish, Mississippi and Dixieland? - "Black Water" by The Doobie Brothers Thanks to everyone who took the quiz, and be sure to take the new one here.
  25. Here was my day yesterday: Go to St. Patrick's Day parade in Hartford. Wait for marching band to come by so I can yell, "More Cowbell." My car was in the parade because it's green. Not that dark green that's sort of blue, but bright, kermit, samba green. Work on the new server while keeping one eye on March Madness. We're getting a lot closer, and I can assure you all that we are putting a lot of work into this. There are a few funky problems we have to solve, but we'll get there.
