  1. ...apart from "abstemious"?
  2. Now you're wanting to swoon and "wub wub"(??) just because I stuck up for you? Jeez, man, what are you, a nervous wreck?
  3. It's about time you took things more seriously and quit being so facetious. }
  4. Tch... I think I fouled this one up with my amateurish attempts at Image technology. Killed the gag and the thread with it. Humblest apologies.
  5. Are you saying you tried "beardy" but it aint for you? I'd reconsider that move. I was reading elsewhere on the Internet that "a **** always looks better with a beard" Moving swiftly on... System Of A Down - Their questionable beards don't stop them from ROCKIN' HARD!
  6. They Might Be Giants P--------t O- L----y
  7. That was days ago, so I'm obviously going to have to try it myself, am I not? "Roobarb" , classic TV animation,-> narrated by Richard Briers, who starred in The Good Life" alongside-> Paul Eddington (RIP), who co-starred in Yes Minister with -> Derek Fowlds ->formerly Mr. Derek on "Basil Brush" -> for maintenance of certain clothing /shoes,use a "Suede-Brush" -> Brett Anderson fronted the band Suede Sorry if that was too Anglo-centric... How about Rolf Harris / Slipknot ?
  8. Now purely coincidentally, i just posted some stuff elsewhere on The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (who I happen to be "listening to right now"), citing them as an example of how skilful, intelligent, articulate and insightful social/political commentary can exist in the context of song. If you're not familiar with them already, I would strongly recommend their album "Hiphoprisy Is The Greatest Luxury"; it sounds like it might be right up your alley. PS. Its not much more recent than Public Enemy (1992): I didn't read that caveat until afterwards...Sorry. But check them out anyway, I don't think you'll be disappointed...
  9. Much as I hate to find myself leaping to the support of johnnyguitar, his point appeared to be that it is indeed possible to posit intelligent social commentary in the context of a 4 minute song. To be fair,(and leaving aside that the track clocks in at 6 mins +), he only quoted half the lyric, which continues in a similarly incisive, articulate and astutely observant vein. The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy's album "Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury" is crammed full of similarly intelligent political comment, insight and wit; not uniquely directed at "easy targets" either. It also has the advantage of being musically inventive. In a thread full of "the over-rated", The Disposable Heroes are a band who have been distinctly under-rated , in my humble opinion.
  10. Johnny, I never had you down as a fan of The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy.
  11. Well I'm glad you think that's funny, 'cause we certainly don't, do we? No , we sure don't.
  12. I'm starting to make sense? NURSE!...Time for my medication!
  13. No. Green Day are a bunch of ageing punk-rockers. Their musical heritage demands that they write the odd song about how sh!t governments are, criticise foreign policy, etc. What they do, they do pretty well. You just don't happen to like them.
  14. For Category 3, ("assassin closing in on victim") I could imagine the distinctive theme from the "Jaws" soundtrack working...
  15. I resent that remark. I, for one, may be two different people, but I insist that johnnyguitar is a totally separate entity from myselves.
  16. I think you'll find you may be right on this one. Obviously my several years of study to achieve fluency in the French language were a total waste of time and tax-payers' money.... But it's "by the way", by the way.
  17. We have the same... She's a light sleeper: sleeps with a light on. I'm a "hard sleeper"..... I sleep with a window open
  18. That's more like it... Noggin the Nog -> Nogbad the BAD -> Michael Jackson -> Peter Adamson (aka Len Fairclough off Coronation St: "Kiddy-Fiddler", who famously conducted his exploration underwater) -> Jacques Cousteau Roobarb -> Brett Anderson of Suede
  19. DiggsUK said johnny, you surely mean a "soupcon"(with a sedilla under the "c")... As for " the gentle punning of Roger McGough"...what claptrap! Quite apart from the fact that my "rap" (if you look carefully) is remarkably pun-free,(unless you'd care to point one out to me?), does it necessarily follow that "if there were puns, it must be McGough-influenced", like he's the only poet that ever made a pun??! Utterly ludicrous...Same goes for your "sprinkle of Neil Innes". Can't say hand on heart "Never heard of him", but on the other hand, "no idea what he does/did". I'm a child of 1965, johnny dear, a youth of the post-punk-rock generation; much of what went on pre-1976 remains a mystery to me if it wasn't in the charts or in my house... I hadn't really thought of John Cooper Clarke, though reading it back, I can see what you're both getting at. If pushed to perform it publicly, I can do a good line in dour, "northern working class" vocal, albeit lacking JCC's distinctive nasal quality... In my head though,it was definitely more of an "uptempo rap number" (a la Public Enemy) I can hear the beats...
  20. The Stranglers "WaltzInBlack" sounds like it might come in very useful to you, either Category 2 or, more likely, Category 4. Best of luck with your drama project. PS For "war-like", how about Black Sabbath's WarPigs. In fact early Black Sabbath could serve you well here. War, Witchcraft, its all there. Maybe a "Sabbath Expert" can advise? (If you prefer instrumentals, Alice Donut do a nifty cover of WarPigs on their album "The Untidy Suicides of Your Degenerate Children", but it has mute trombone in lieu of vocals... )
  21. In principle I like this game... Might be more fun for me if we focused on bands / musicians rather than films / actors, since I really don't follow the latter at all.
  22. 9/10 "you can't beat a nice muffin" My birthday "cake" was home-made chocolate brownies.
  23. Heck, it's hardly started yet! I've been at work the last 7 and a half hours (tho' I've hardly done any....) Off home soon for birthday tea with the kids then out to a gig later? dunno about "happy and healthy", but should be fun, I hope!
  24. and MISSING WORDS!!! (I'll up the ante with some bold type) but can I take this opportunity to say "thanks" to all those of you who have taken a few precious seconds out of your day just to send your birthday greetings. I really am quite overwhelmed. (It's places like this that enable loners like me to feel like there really are people out there that care...)
