  1. Just seen something I don't recall ever having seen before : can a starting pitcher pick up both the win and the save for the same game ? I didn't believe this was possible . Tonight's Yanks/Atlanta game : C.C Sabbatia was the starter .Atlanta lead 2-0 until the bottom of the 5th when the Yanks scored 3. Atlanta never scored again and the final score ended up 6-2 for NY . Sabbatia pitched the entire 9 innings . However , in the box scores (yahoo!'s at least ) , Sabbatia is credited with both the win and a save for the game . A typo, possibly ?
  2. Congratulations to both of you! Lovely picture . Don't forget to set your pitcher's before you go. Life is amazingly normal again , after all, once the wedding 'buzz' wears off. Enjoy the honeymoon !
  3. Oh man , that sucks , Carole. Since big pitching day points often are better than a batter's , I alway leave my very best pitchers in an active spot rather than the bench if possible . So easy to overlook a start or forget to set up a day's roster sometimes .Unfortunately, I haven't got a single big name this season,so I don't need to worry as much this year . I like what Sammy has done in points to get himself into striking position : run up his innings pitched by picking up and ditching pitchers , and now settled back to see if his batters can keep him up there, while he lets his innings drop now (I think that's what he's doing ) . Good move to try if you are starting to feel like you are slipping out of reach . Lots of folks leave it too long or late . So far though , Points is still a good race coming up to the all-star break with all still in -with a bit of luck naturally- and anything could happen .
  4. After 35 years , the NPR radio program 'Car Talk ' will end this September. For those of you who are fans , you know what a disappointment this is .For those who haven't heard it , it's a program where guests call in with their auto problems to two brothers from Boston ( mechanics , but also curiously M.I.T educated ). It's a hilarious show with these guys having a great self-deprecating humor , always laughing, and teasing each other along with their guests . I'm gonna miss this show . Reruns ( or rather reproduced shows ) are planned in the time slot however , and as the auto advice is often secondary to the humor , it should continue to entertain . Give it a listen if you haven't heard it . The fun the brothers have over the hour is rather infectious and will put you in a good mood for a bit . They are like modern Marx brothers . . ----------- RAY: Hey, you guys. My brother has always said, “Don’t be afraid of work.†TOM: Right. Make work afraid of YOU! RAY: And he’s done such a good job at it, that work has avoided him all his life. TOM: And with Car Talk celebrating its 25th anniversary on NPR this fall (35th year overall, including our local years at WBUR)… RAY: …and my brother turning over the birthday odometer to 75, we’ve decided that it’s time to stop and smell the cappuccino. TOM: So as of October, we’re not going to be recording any more new shows. That’s right, we’re retiring. RAY: So, we can finally answer the question, if my brother retired, how would he know? TOM: The good news is that, despite our general incompetence, we actually remembered to hit the “record†button every week for the last 25 years. So we have more than 1,200 programs we’re going to dig into starting this fall, and the series will continue. RAY: Every week, starting in October, NPR will broadcast a newly assembled Car Talk show, selected from the best material in our archives. TOM: Sorry, detractors, we’re still going to be on the air! RAY: But to our fans, don’t be sad. We’ve managed to avoid getting thrown off NPR for 25 years, given out tens of thousands of wrong answers, generated lawsuit threats from innumerable car companies, and had a hell of a lot of fun talking to you guys. TOM: And when we listen to the stuff that’s in our archives, it still makes us laugh. A lot. We’re hoping to be like “I Love Lucy†and air ten times a day on “NPR at Nite†in 2075. RAY: Will we change our minds and come back and do some more shows? I would say it’s unlikely, but anything’s possible. Right, Tommy? TOM: Absolutely not. My brother can go chase himself. I’m done. RAY: But, we’ll still be contributing to our web site regularly, writing our weekly “Dear Tom and Ray†column… TOM: …and clanging pots in the office to make sure our staff is awake at least two hours a day. RAY: In the meantime, thank you for giving us far more of your time than we ever deserved. We love you. And know that starting this fall, for the first time, we’ll be able to sit at home, laughing at Car Talk along with you guys on Saturday mornings.

    The Avengers

IMO , I'm sick of super hero fare, frat-boy 'nerdish' romantic ' comedies ' or pointless CGI action movies -3D,or not .. Make some movies for adults again , Hollywood , so we don't have to stay home watching TV -which has been better than movies for a number of years now ... :beady:
  6. I hope you followed her around -from a discreet distance - in your car that night ... just in case she needed a little money or a handkerchief or whatever . Congrats on finishing high school finally though , bud ! Who did you go with ?
  7. Now THAT's good parenting ! Personally , I can't bring myself to watch any of them anymore . I feel they have run their course . I may put on the Deadliest Catch, since I like sea-themed stories , but it generally is just BGM for a nap . I am absolutely stunned that many of these shows have lasted beyond a single season ... Dancing or sing contests ?!?! I've always seen America as more cynical and discerning than that , but was way wrong on that. Must be the wars .
  8. Got a question for MC ,our local sport's betmiester ( or anyone else that follows this and understands ) : I recently started to subscribe to the NY Daily News App , and one of their features in the sports section is giving 'the line ' on sporting match ups . Now I get when its showing a point spread between two teams like 4.5 points , etc . or even the over/under . However , many match ups show a schematic I don't understand at all . Let me give an example : Today/Baseball : Favorite: Line: Underdog: Line: at Toronto -140 Washington +130 New York - 110 at Atlanta +100 ----------------------- NBA/ To Win series: Oklahoma City -160 Miami +140 What do these numbers mean ?

  13. I think you may be right ,Phil . Sure glad I didn't get either this season . It must be incredibly frustrating; you can't just drop them , trade them for a song ( cause no one would likely give you a high production player(s) at this point, which they would normally warrant ) , nor bench them easily for long periods in case they do break out .Good luck ! Adrian Gonzalez has been like that for me as well, often getting just 0.5-2 points ,at best, a day.
  14. That was awesome ,XXX .Hearing the odd coin catching sound was great too . 'This Charming Plumber ...'
  15. Well done, Tim !! Man ,seems just not so long ago you were telling us about getting accepted , and now you've finished . Time thieves have been about . Good luck with your job search now .
  16. Wow. 2 consecutive complete game shut outs for CanAm, making about 5 or 6 for him already this early in the season. Nice ! How do we compete with THAT !?!? ( a DL hex on Verlander an /or Kershaw :beady: ) I have yet to have even one in either category ...
  17. Too true, but if we don't laugh the Grim Reaper back he wins .
  18. Nice complete game shutout from Price today ,Carole You've soared out of the basement this week . Was beginning to wonder about your bunch ... Ron Washington owes me 25 points ! He pulled Darvish after 8 1/3, and he wasn't struggling, just a runner on first. The closer came in and next pitch was a double play to end the game . :beady:

    Mad Men

I'm a big fan as well , for all the reasons mentioned ,though I have to order the DVD season sets as they come out since Netflix is not set up here yet. I find this to be one of the better ways to watch a drama series however , as each episode hooks you like crack to want to see what will happen next and the minor story elements are easier to keep in mind as you watch . That made a series like ' The Wire ' and 'Lost 'more enjoyable as well . Hulu has entered the Japanese market now , so we will see how that goes . Surprisingly, though ,for all the critical praise this show gets , I know next to no one who has either seen it or it being their cup of tea if they have-even back home .Good to find some like minded folks here .
  21. Good race in points so far. Frequent leader changes and big ranking leaps possible on a lucky day , along with everyone nicely out of the gate . No one is dominating , but CanAm does seem to be putting up the best daily averages so far. A couple of complete games for some early in the season already , too How goes the head to head ?
