MindCrime
What do you feel; are the main attributes required behind a song’s guidelines in order to consider it probable as being worthy of “Classic In my way of evaluating, I look for 6 key standards: Standing the test of time. - Just as listenable today as it was a couple decades ago. - Twenty years since original release, unless artist has previous experience Innovation - Original / non-parody; influences are direct from traditional rooted sources Talent - Well produced, with poetically written lyrics - Proper guitar chords / bass-rhythm / & drumbeat. Keyboards, percussion, etc. are optional. Slightly commercial at best - A lot of record tracks, eventually become stale, if not quickly, when they are over-hyped upon release. - Being a mass-appealed target, generally causes style over substance. Remains without corporate interference - Not a load of record company push, which is grave grounds later on Exposure - Radio friendly - Band is already established / preferably in the Hall of Fame Edited June 27, 2006 by Guest edited to fix typo in header; Thanks Rach :P
The Seeker
Beethoven wrote many a hit single that one commonly calls classic (music). Ok, now, I'm not so sure about this Slighly Commercial At Best... sure it takes some of the appeal or edge or whatever if a song is hyped upon release, but I wouldn't use this as a criteria for a classic song. But I agree with the rest of the list.
invisible_r
i don't like being pedantic but either "What exactly is the criterion for deeming a song as "Classic" " or "What exactly are the criteria for deeming a song as "Classic"

The Who's Magic Bus .. Do You Know What I Mean - Lee Micheals Radio friendlyIn A Gadda Da Vida ? etc. preferably in the Hall of Fame What about all the one hit wonders? MindCrime
Bazooka, I didn't mean that every song has to fit all these elements, just in the sense that, those are the main priorities I would look for in most music, whilst evaluating. Radio friendly In a Gadda Da Vida? Damn straight 17 1/2 minutes ; commercial uninterrupted ; with a wide array of musical interlude variety. The local station in Los Angeles plays the 6 minute 15 second edited version of this song however, which I personally feel is far from Master. Malakin
I prefer not to evaluate music along any criteria other than that I like it. As for what makes it a classic, that's simple: I STILL like it.

edna
A classic should be a song that is quite old and very well known.
c_s_1987
Exposure - Radio friendly - Band is already established / preferably in the Hall of Fame NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I completely disagree with both of these. I personally think most truly great songs aren't radio friendly.
c_s_1987
Innovation - Original / non-parody I definitely think cover versions deserve much less credit than originals, but there remains many very popular covers that some consider classics. For example: "All Along The Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix (original - Bob Dylan) "Bette Davis Eyes" - Kim Carnes (original - Jackie DeShannon) "Blue Suede Shoes" - Elvis Presley (original - Carl Perkins) "The House Of The Rising Sun" - The Animals (original - Georgia Turner) "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" - Marvin Gaye (original - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles) "I'm A Believer" - The Monkees (original - Neil Diamond) "Mack The Knife" - Bobby Darin (original - Kurt Weill) "Respect" - Arethra Franklin (original - Otis Redding) "(They Long To Be) Close To You" - Dionne Warwick/Dusty Springfield/The Carpenters (three seperate versions) (original - Richard Chamberlain) "Unchained Melody" - The Righteous Brothers (original - Les Baxter)
Skuff
A classic should be a song that is quite old and very well known. I agree, It doesn't have to be a hit, just as long as it's from the ....'50's, '60's '70's or '80's, it's classic *'.....' because 'In the Mood is from the 40's, and so are other Glenn Miller songs

Skuff
so what , everything that's old is a classic? i seriously disagree with that! I didn't say it is A classic, I just said it's classic, as in "from the '50's to the `80's" As it says on this VERY forum (Under Music discussion classic)"For music born before 1980. Here's the place to discuss your old favorites from the '70s, '60s, '50s and earlier! "
