Sacrifice

Thought about the folks back home

All those miles that we had roamed

Still can see your pretty hair

When I come back will you be there

You flew away like a kite

I hope you find your light

I pray they treat you right

What a sacrifice

Miles and miles I have roamed

Lookin' for that home sweet home

Thought I had the love with you

But I found out that you weren't true

You made me feel so nice

Ready for wedding rice

Then you said no dice

What a sacrifice

Lookin' back on time that's gone

I realized I might have been wrong

But Macon took you for a ride

They broke us up for their own pride

But you were young and didn't understand

That you had found your lifetime man

Maybe someday you'll see

It gets so lonely being free

So don't be wrong twice

What a sacrifice

Also, there is a few christian songs I know of, but not sure if that's the kind of songs you are looking for.

Jimmy Dean

Big Bad John

(Big John, Big John)

Ev'ry mornin' at the mine you could see him arrive

He stood six foot six and weighed two forty five

Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip

And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to Big John.

(Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John)

Nobody seemed to know where John called home

He just drifted into town and stayed all alone

He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy

And if you spoke at all, you just said "Hi" to Big John.

Somebody said he came from New Orleans

Where he got in a fight over a Cajun Queen

And a crashin' blow from a huge right hand

Sent a Lousiana fellow to the Promised Land-Big John

(Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John)

Then came the day at the bottom of the mine

When a timber cracked and men started cryin'

Miners were prayin' and hearts beat fast

And everybody thought that they'd breathed their last-'cept John

Through the dust and the smoke of this man-made hell

Walked a giant of a man that the miners knew well

Grabbed a saggin' timber, gave out with a groan

And like a giant oak tree he just stood there alone-Big John

(Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John)

And with all of his strength he gave a mighty shove

Then a miner yelled out "There's a light up above!"

And twenty men scrambled from a would-be grave

Now there's only one left down there to save-Big John

With jacks and timbers they started back down

Then came that rumble way down in the ground

And then smoke and gas belched out of that mine

Everybody knew it was the end of the line for Big John

(Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John)

Now they never reopened that worthless pit

They just placed a marble stand in front of it

These few words are written on that stand

At the bottom of this mine lies a big, big man, Big John

(Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John)

[Fade]

(Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John)

Hows about....

I took a goat

and cut its throat

it seemed a good idea at the time

I let it dangle

on my pentangle

and now everything's gonna be just fine

(Sludge)

I only just wrote it, but it sounds like a classic in the making.

Not THE Sludge, surely??? The way I read it , you seem to be implying that you, johnnyguitar are a member of Sludge. Unbelievable!

I kind of lost touch with Sludge around the time of "Never read Kafka" , which must have been... (correct me if I'm wrong) about '96 / 97? I liked quite a bit of the earlier stuff: the more psychedelic "wig-out" stuff, ("Frank Bough:Unsuitable Babysitter" and "Another restless Night (listening to Tarantulas Mating)" before things went a bit fey and poppy. Also, some of the attempts at "getting political" were a bit ham-fisted for me. What was that one about the impact of the foot-and-mouth outbreak on the North-West farming industry? "Sheepless in Settle"

Tres drole.

But hang on a minute: when I saw Sludge, which was a few times, at various festivals, there were two guitarists. One, I remember, had a ludicrous Jason King 'tache and wore leopard print pants,(fancied himself something chronic...) and the other was virtually a trans-sexual, (who sported knee-high patent leather boots and a pair of (presumably) fake female breasts at the "Pure Acid Park" gig in Doncaster, (1986??))

So johnnyguitar, (unless you've joined the band more recently), to which of these guitarists am I talking?

Let us just say that I may be more than passingly acquainted with one or two of the band but it would not be fair or decorous of me to parlay that acquaintance into any sort of reflected glory. Sludge were less than the sum of their parts....and some of their parts were huge.

For me their greatest moments still lie in the future.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will look them over when I get a chance

The reason I am looking for a song about sacrifice is because I'm writing a story about a woman who, to save two of her friends, breaks a felon out of prison. Of course, things go terribly etc, but basically, the main character goes against her guts to save her friends--and that's where the sacrifice comes in.

I was just looking for a song to motivate, maybe even incorporate with the story.. Thanks again :)
