409/Shut Down/I Get Around

Recommended Posts

Back in high school, the gear heads had a language and style all their own. If the local girls were cool to your car, stomping on the gas pedal would get you to another school/venue where cool was measured in cubic inch displacement. One didn't have to own/drive a hot rod to get noticed: a rowdy classmate once referred to me and my "409 legs.;)" Not too bad, considering that my teacher parents drove six cylinder Plymouth Valiants hither and yon... (The hot wheels back then belonged to hot rodded 1957 Chevys.)

Here's what's kinda sad: Cars today are made for comfort, and we're on the way to driver-less vehicles. That's OK, but teenage boys won't even need to drive. They will not feel the tug of acceleration when they hit the gas. They will not tinker under the hood. They will not try to make it louder or faster or more appealing to girls.

Yes, we are moving toward a day when we just get in a pod and it takes us to our programmed destination while we enjoy the entertainment system.

I still drive a stick shift.

Wish I had a grey Cortina
Whiplash aerial, racing trim
Cortina owner, no one meaner
Wish that I could be like him

Twin exhaust and rusty bumper
Chewing gum at traffic light
Stop at red but leave on amber
Grey Cortina outa sight

Wish I had a grey Cortina
Whiplash aerial, racing trim
Cortina owner, no one meaner
Wish that I could be like him

Furlined seats and lettered windscreen
Elbow on the windowsill
Eight track blazing Brucie Springsteen
Bomber jacket, dressed to kill

Wish I had a grey Cortina
Whiplash aerial, racing trim
Cortina owner, no one meaner
Wish that I could be like him

Never cop a parking ticket
Never seem to show its age
Speed police too slow to nick it
Grey Cortina got it made

Wish I had a grey Cortina
Whiplash aerial, racing trim
Cortina owner, no one meaner
Wish that I could be like him
