MindCrime Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 Bing.com recently came up with a list of what they feel are the greatest ever. MindCrime Posted April 17, 2010 Author Report Posted April 17, 2010 STP, Prince, and BeeGees better than Rolling Stones? please. None of those should be in the top 20. And Tom Petty isn't on there, but disposable groups like Duran Duran and Motley Crue are?
Lucky Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 They put Van Halen at #5 ..... I don't know who is responsible or how it's compiled, but it's way wrong.
c_s_1987 Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 Meh. The only thing I really like about this list is that Yes, King Crimson and Jethro Tull are all a fair bit higher than they are on most lists. Also, I would like to assure all the naysayers that Genesis do deserve to be in the top 20. How could anyone rate Van Halen that much higher than The Who?
RockyRaccoon Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 I would say the majority of these bands have good credentials for being in a greatest artists of all time list. However, I'm curious as to if this is a greatest BANDS list or a greatest ARTISTS list. If the latter, the omission of Bob Dylan is unbelievable. And Leonard Cohen for that matter. But if the list is either, the omission of Tom Petty is bad. The order is very debatable. Overall, meh.
MindCrime Posted April 17, 2010 Author Report Posted April 17, 2010 I think it's bands / groups, not solo - hence the omission of Bob Dylan and why Bruce is listed with the E Street band. anyways, this list basically sucks and is inaccurate. It would be fine if it were in a different order with around 10 replacements.
Farin Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 Bing is a search engine, what makes them experts at music? Van Halen is MUCH too high, same with Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden. "The Eagles" are still called "Eagles", same with Beastie Boys and Scorpions and Orbital, Underworld, The Orb? seems someone's a die-hard ambient fan if they list such bands but not even Kraftwerk
chutzpah Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 Deep Purple is below No Doubt... Lots of good bands but a few of them don't belong anywhere in that order...and a few others shouldn't even be in the list...
MindCrime Posted April 17, 2010 Author Report Posted April 17, 2010 (edited) Underworld, The Orb? I don't think I'm familiar with either of those or Thievery Corporation, but I might have heard some of their stuff without really knowing. The Roots really haven't done enough to be established on a list like this, considering such Rap innovators like Run D.M.C. are nowhere to be found. Outkast would also be a good representative of hip-hop on this list. I'm curious as to what the guidelines were for making this list, is it based on searches or an ill-fated survey. Farin Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 "The Eagles" are still called "Eagles", same with Beastie Boys and Scorpions and Talking Heads yes, them too... I mostly know them from name only too, all chillout or ambient electronic stuff, not really mainstream in the broadest sense at lest Underworld had one(!) Top Ten hit: Born Slippy now I'm the last one that says commercial success = musical quality - but this is too much even for me
Lucky Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 This list is ridiculous. Van Halen above almost everyone? And I like VH but not #5 like. The freaking Dixie Chicks at #43 are above David Bowie, and so many others? I wouldn't put the Dixie Chicks on any Greatest list, not even country, but most especially not on a list that is rock oriented.
TheLizard Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 There is no universe that exists where the Bee Gees are better than the Rolling Stones.
c_s_1987 Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 And Grateful Dead, and The Allman Brothers Band. And I'm sure we could find more band names they got wrong if we looked hard enough.
chutzpah Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 At least Zappa finished ahead of the Carpenters
MindCrime Posted April 17, 2010 Author Report Posted April 17, 2010 I'm sure we could find more band names they got wrong if we looked hard enough. Yeah, like where they misspelled Ramones as Motley Crue
Lea Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 The only thing I agree with is the top three and I'm not sure I agree with the order they put them in. That is my top three groups so I'm biased of course. As for the rest of the list, I find it kinda insulting for a lot of the artists listed and where the heck is ELP. A band with three members that are considered tops in their craft all over the globe and their not even listed but Journey is I like Journey and all but damn. I won't even mention they placed them higher then bands like Blind Faith, CCR and R.E.M. I think we're all in agreement, this list bite's
MindCrime Posted April 17, 2010 Author Report Posted April 17, 2010 This list sucks and I apologize for posting it. It seemed interesting when an online buddy at another site brought it to my attention last night, but I admit I didn't really review it before posting.
MindCrime Posted April 17, 2010 Author Report Posted April 17, 2010 And no Santana Yeah.. Santana is a band.. wtf?
chutzpah Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 And it was fun picking it apart... No Jefferson Airplane or Jefferson Starship...or Hot Tuna...
Farin Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 That's not really my music, but Jefferson Starship? the "we build this city on rock'n'roll" ones? but no Pixies either...
chutzpah Posted April 17, 2010 Report Posted April 17, 2010 The Jefferson Airplane and Starship were almost the same band minus a few people and others who joined,left...then rejoined... :laughing:and yeah they did We Built This City,Jane,Ride The Tiger...
MindCrime Posted April 17, 2010 Author Report Posted April 17, 2010 I could see J.Airplane making it in, but not Starship
