OLD 55
Thanks for voting Laurie. Well, I thought the 50s was reasonable Kenne. Some R & B songs before that would be acceptable though. Not songs that don't 'fit in' with the era we've been mainly dealing with, e.g. not a 40's 'Big Band' song. Have you got something specific in mind ?
MindCrime
Not really, just wasn't sure if it was '50 or '54-55.

cyberjudge
Welcome back to Golden Oldies Top 40, where we “rap†up the action on this week’s survey of the greatest hits from 1950 to 1963. I’m your host, DJ Ceejay, and here we go: Last week, Stay by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs became the shortest song ever to top the GO-40, both in song length (1:28; a distinction it also holds on the Hot 100), and in title length (4 letters; on the Hot 100,Why by Frankie Avalon in 1959 was the 1st of several 3 letter #1’s). Will it “stay†at #1??? The answer later in the countdown. 3 songs leave our chart this week: Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool by Connie Francis, which made it to #32, Louie Louie by the Kingsmen, a former top 10, peaking at #8, and A former #1, You Don’t Own Me by Lesley Gore. That puts 3 new songs in the chart this week, all by chart veterans: Sam Cooke, who reached #20 with You Send Me, debuts this week at #38 with Chain Gang. Buddy Holly, who hit #14 as leader of the Crickets with That’ll Be the Day, returns at #37 with Peggy Sue. And the highest new song this week is by an artist who is represented on 3 hits in this week’s countdown. 2 of those are as lead singer of the Drifters, There Goes My Baby at #27 and Save the Last Dance for Me at #14. And this week, Ben E. King enters the chart at #31 with his second solo hit, Spanish Harlem. (He hit #2 with Stand by Me.) 4 songs take prodigious double digit leaps this week: Surfer Girl by the Beach Boys coasts up 13 notches from #39 to #26, At Last by Etta James moves up 10 for a 2nd straight week, this time from #28 to #18, Green Onions by Booker T & the MG’s moves up 15 from #31 to #16, And the biggest mover this week, up 21 positions from #34 to #13 is Cry to Me by Solomon Burke. There is only 1 new song in the top 10 this week: Hello Mary Lou by Ricky Nelson squeaks up 3 notches from #12 to #9. It’s the 2nd top 10 for Nelson on GO-40, following the #1, Travelin’ Man. If Mary Lou tops out in the #9 spot, both the A-side Travelin’ Man and the B-side Hello Mary Lou will have matched their Hot 100 peak positions. Now that brings us to the top 3: Stay by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs ends its 1-week stay at #1, falling to #3. Then He Kissed Me by the Crystals, written by Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry, moves into the on-deck circle, sliding up to #2. And the #1 song for the 2nd non-consecutive week … the 1st song to return to the #1 spot since Del Shannon’s Runaway is: Little Sister by . That “raps†up week #27 for Golden Oldies top 40. Until next week, keep your head in the stars and keep reaching for the ground.
