Carl
Hi All. In the Freddy Cannon song "Palisades Park," there's a line, "I took a ride on a shoot-the-chute" Does anyone know what this is? Sounds like a ride at the park, so if anyone's been there maybe you could drop some knowledge.
skybluesky
Wikipedia says a shoot the chute is a water ride. I've known them as log rides, but they are sometimes flume rides. I would've guessed it was one of those really long slides. Wiki-Shoot the Chute
Lea
I remember that song from when I was a kid. I always thought a shoot-the-chute was some kind of roller coaster ride. After all these years I find I was wrong hmmm. I didn't even know they had water rides back when that song came out.
bazooka
Lots of information about Palisades Park here, plus links to other resources. Didn't find anything on "shoot-the-chute" straight away, though.
Carl
Thanks all. I've never heard it called that - I always used "Flume."
RonJonSurfer
Any Jersey kid in the 60's knew the theme song by heart...It was played hourly on radio stations throughout the NY/NJ area: Palisades has the rides, Palisades has the fun Come on over Shows and dancing are free, so's the parking, so gee Come on over Palisades from coast to coast, where a dime buys the most Palisades Amusement Park, swings all day and after dark (bum bah dum ba bum) Ride the coaster, get cool, in the waves in the pool...you'll have fun!!! So come on over (dum de dum da dum..dum) Palisades was on a cliff just outside of NYC. It was not a Jersey Shore attraction...it was close to the George Washington Bridge and all NYC access. That's why the song says "Come on over"...over the river to Jersey. They had famous rock acts of the day, entertainers, comedians, personalities, etc. Great rides too. The waves in the pool refers to what must have been the first ever "wave pool". Many waterparks have them now. Of course Freddy Cannon had a hit with the song Carl is referring to....written by chuck Barris of Gong Show fame.
