  1. I agree with you Carl. A sell-out is someone who goes against their principles for money. However, if their goal is to make money, they can't really sell out. When you look at it that way, it's really hard to determine who is a sell-out and who isn't. Who can say what an artist's goal is besides the artist himself? And really, making good art and making money can go hand in hand, because if you make good art and you make money with it as well, you can use that money to (figuratively) buy yourself more time or (literally) buy the equipment to keep making good art. And sometimes "selling out" is a good thing. In high school I was a Death Cab For Cutie fan, and I think that once they started making more accessible and well-produced music they became a better band.
  2. or have like to have seen I read in a jazz history textbook that Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix were friends but never had the time to record an album because Jimi died. How awesome would it have been if they did though?
  3. EWF is the greatest! Another personal fave of mine is "Thats the Way of the World"
  4. oh and pretty much all of Eminem's hit songs mention a ton of other musicians.
  5. "they say I'm rappin like big J and Tupac Andre 3000 where is erykah badu at? who dat?"
  6. I think it depends on the artist. Like if Janis Joplin was the one who decided she wanted "Mercedes Benz" in a Mercedes Benz commercial, she would be a sellout for what I assume are obvious reasons. But if, let's say, Lil Wayne sold a song to a Lamborghini commercial, I wouldn't consider that to be selling out, since as far as I can tell Lil Wayne really likes Lamborghinis.
  7. The opposite of that other thread In this thread, discuss rock stars who didn't "sell out" and why they are cool/not cool. Van Morrison is the first person that comes to mind for me. His music has naturally changed with his age, and when he plays old stuff you can tell it's not because he wants to cash in on baby-boomer nostalgia, it's because he believes in the timeless-ness of certain music. Not that I have any direct quotes to assert that position, it's just the impression I got when I read a Rolling Stone interview with him about his recent concert in which he played all of "Astral Weeks."
  8. I don't think there's a problem with drinking in college if you are able to keep it in moderation and balance it with schoolwork well. And whether I'm drinking or not, I'm not going to spend my Saturday night studying. Unless I'm really busy, I pretty much just take Fridays and Saturdays off and do my schoolwork on Sundays. And I'd say it's working out pretty well so far. I've got something like a 3.2 gpa and I've got more credits than the reccomended amount to graduate on time. It's my opinion that drinking on the weekdays is what causes the most trouble for students. Not that I'm above that or anything though...I've been known to celebrate the occasional Thirsty Thursday.
  9. Wow that must have been pretty tough. Kudos for being able to do it! I'm pretty sure I don't have the will power.
  10. I disagree about the addictiveness. Even if there's no physical addiction, it's really easy to get into the habit of smoking weed all the time, and there's a big psychological addiction. It was probably sometime in the middle of August that I decided I didn't want to smoke weed anymore but I still smoked it a few times a week until the end of November. But I guess doing anything a lot can lead to a psychological addiction. Plus it's difficult to quit any substance in college since they're all so abundant.
  11. "freebasing" has a really negative conotation to it, but you can actually do it with marijuana and it's probably better for you than actually smoking it
  12. Art doesn't need a market, but if someone is able to make money with art then they have the ability to spend their entire 9-hour workday making art. If there was no market to art, then all the artists would have to get jobs and have much less time to devote to making art.
  13. here are the first ones that came to mind Radiohead Godspeed You! Black Emperor Wilco (particularly on "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot") Built to Spill
  14. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue talk about an all-star group!
  15. "Wait (The Whisper Song)" is one of the funniest songs ever recorded.
  16. Actually I'm pretty sure it's in Portugese because Seu Jorge is a Brazilian musician. But yeah, The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions by Seu Jorge is an excellent album, highly reccomended for all Bowie fans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOdUClEiNGE&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LynWXw2utqI&feature=related
  17. out of all the groups I listen to on a regular basis, the Chieftains is probably the best collection of instrumentalists

  22. in this thread, discuss good remixes the bloody beetroots remix of "lollipop" is about a billion times better than the original
  23. I'm just dissapointed MIA didn't give birth on stage, that would have been awesome! Not a big fan of "I Kissed a Girl" but Katy Perry's other hit "Hot N Cold" is pretty good even if Katy Perry isn't the reason it's good.
  24. Yeah I agree that they're pretty emo (as an adjective), but if he actually thinks they are responsible for the genre of emo, he really just does not know much about punk.
