  1. Three people nailed this one:: Rachel from Greenfield, IN Dave from Newark, DE Shannon from parts unknown (Ireland, I think) Dave is one of our outstanding Moderators and Shannon is a previous winner, so the clean and comfortable T-shirt goes to Rachel. Here are the answers: [#1]What singer is both the star and executive producer of her own reality show? Britney Spears The show is called Britney And Kevin: Chaotic [#2]What hit song has a title that uses just one letter of the alphabet? (the letter is used more than once) "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" by Crash Test Dummies [#3]What song contains the line, "Consider this, the hint of the century"? "Losing My Religion" by R.E.M. [#4]What band ended their last concert with the words, "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?" The Sex Pistols [#5]Who released a million-selling solo album at age 19 after being kicked out of a successful boy band? Bobby Brown [#6]What group's bass player died when their tour bus slid off an icy road? Metallica [#7]What hit song from the '80s is named after a constellation? "Southern Cross" by Crosby, Stills and Nash [#8]Who was the first rapper to endorse a product on national TV? Kurtis Blow He did an ad for Sprite [#9]Who was once married to a famous Rock drummer, and is now married to a famous Rock singer? Elaine Irwin She was married to Tommy Lee of Motley Crue for about a month, and is now married to John Mellencamp. Most people figured out that the drummer was Tommy Lee, but guessed either Pam Anderson (she did go out with Kid Rock) or Heather Locklear (also married to Richie Sambora, but he's a guitarist). Another great guess which is really close to being right is Kim Moon, who was married to Keith Moon and is now wed to Ian McLagan, who played keyboards for The Small Faces. [#10]What famous singer assaulted a photographer in 2004 who was trying to take a picture of his wife? Chris Martin of Coldplay He's married to Gwyneth Paltrow Thanks to everyone who took the quiz, and be sure to take the new one.
  2. Server problems continue, and we're making a big push to fix them. Over the last few days, I rebuilt a database, tried about 100 different configurations, took down the boards for a while to see what would happen and asked for help from 3 different developers. We still don't know what's wrong, but we are getting closer. Here's one thing I know for sure: We're going to try a new message boards system. It will look a lot like this system, but should be faster and much more stable. All posts and user info will be imported, although I think private messages will be lost. I'll keep you guys updated on what's going on. I can't blame anyone for getting frustrated and not coming back, but I can assure you that a lot of effort is being put into getting the site working consistently and moving to message boards that will take us well into the future.
  3. It is important for you guys to let us know if things are screwy. With a site this size that handles all this traffic, there are a variety of things that can go wrong. It takes a lot of experimentation and learning to get it running smoothly.
  4. They're going to announce in a few minutes. My prediction: Not Guilty. Mike walks.
  5. We made a possible breakthrough today. Seems we were using some factory settings when we needed to custom tune.
  6. George Michael sampled her on a song called "Too Funky," which I always liked, but didn't hold up so well over time. When actors say they can "really do something with that part," her performance in The Graduate is what they're going for.
  7. What's frustrating is that we make some tweaks and everything will be great for a while, and then it will bog down again. We're going to bring in some new blood to look under the hood. We appreciate your continued patience.
  8. My friend worked for the weather channel for many years. As far as I know, their music is all custom made for them so they don't have to pay royalties. I'd be interested to know if they're using real songs. Sidenote - Those weather channel jackets are babe magnets.
  9. I would love to interview Smokey someday because I think he is a spectacular songwriter - the kind that has a way of tapping into emotions. If I ever did, I'd probably be like that Chris Farley character on SNL: "Remember when you wrote Tears Of A Clown? That was really good. You're awesome." Thanks for the note on the CD. I'll definitely check it out.
  10. Hunter might be going through a mid-life crisis. She played the ultimate MILF in the "Stacey's Mom" video, and now she's on that new reality ballroom dancing show.
  11. I think radio stations are finally starting to realize that most people like more than one genre of music. With 2000+ songs on my Ipod, I usually listen in shuffle and have no problem with a Folk song followed by Hip Hop and then Classic Rock. The quality of the song is what's important, not the genre. It took Internet and Satelite radio to push it along, but we're seeing unclassifiable formats with names like "The Jack" and "Channel 957." This is a good thing.
  12. Dig deep, and help us find some great albums that deserve a listen. Make your suggestions for List #10.

    List #9

Here's List #9: Primus - Sailing The Seas Of Cheese Fleetwood Mac - Rumours Marillion - Afraid Of Sunlight Requiem For A Dream Soundtrack Dr' John's Gumbo Rumours got an overwhelming show of support. We set the link to the new 2-disc edition which contains "Silver Springs" (yes, it was left off the original). Primus Sucks! So we included them in this one. Marillion has some hardcore fans, including many who are trying to spread their Gospel to the United States. A listen to this album should help. I don't know much about Dr. John or the Requiem soundtrack, but they sound real interesting. Thanks for all the suggestions, and please give us more ideas for list 10.
  14. The moderators have discussed, and we picked 6 winners of Herb Alpert CDs from Shout! Factory. HD, Floyd and Ken took themselves out of the running because they are moderators, but they all wrote very moving stories. Here are the 6 winners: DJ Kat Laurie RonJonSurfer Old Ed Josef Late Boomer If each of you can send me a Private Message, we'll arrange to get you your CDs. Congratulations and thanks for sharing those memories. Anyone is welcome to continue this thread and post their memories related to that one special song. I enjoyed reading what we have so far.
  15. This weekend was a little rough as well. We'll keep working at it.
  16. Last week was going great in the world of Songfacts. We were getting tons of traffic, the site was behaving beautifully, song information was pouring in, the birds were singing... So it's late Friday night and I'm about to go to bed. As an insomniac, I have to build up a sizable "sleep dept" before I can get any R.E.M.s, so I had been up for a while and ready for a good, healthy slumber. We had some good new song entries, so I figured I would update the database before I crashed (bad choice of words). Without getting too technical, all hell broke loose. The site went completely wacky and nothing would bring it back to life. Of course, this happened early on Memorial Day weekend when any tech support person worth his slide ruler was off duty. Let's just say my sleep debt reached unhealthy levels. Some nice people did what they could and we were able to get the database loaded and bring the site to life. We'll look into why it happened and do our best to make sure it doesn't happen again. One thing I hate about these total meltdowns is that there is no way to let you guys know what's going on. We couldn't even keep a homepage up for more than a few minutes. Hopefully, all will be well and we can learn from this one.
  17. I want Quentin Tarrantino directing the movie version of Fox Force Five. I'll give him Uma Thurman, but he has to take Tea Leoni, Elizabeth Shue, Tia Carrere and Bridget Fonda. I want Morgan Freeman finally breaking character and playing the villian. Let's get Ashton Kutcher in there somewhere, not breaking character. And Christopher Walken. He's the one they have to save. Maybe this is why I'm not a screenwriter.
  18. A friend of mine had a great description of the ridiculous scene where Vader screams (Was that really the best take from James Earl Jones): FrankenVader.
  19. Andy- You were way too low on the tiebreaker. If you get all of them right on this one, we'll send you a shirt even if you don't get closest.
  20. This was a pretty good quiz, and an Aimee Mann prize pack was up for grabs along with the T-shirt. If you haven't heard her new CD, it's definitely worth a listen - The Forgotten Arm. Louise from Birmingham, England wins the clean and comfortable T-shirt, as well as the Aimee Mann prize pack - her CD The Forgotten Arm and her live DVD. Here are the answers: What famous band released 2 consecutive albums with titles that were 4-digit numbers? - Van Halen 1984 and 5150 What famous band that started in the '60s smashed their equipment after most of their shows? - The Who What hit from 2004 has the same name as a famous movie from the '50s. - "Vertigo" by U2 What famous band changed the spelling of their name so they could get the domain name? - Linkin Park What musician has been in movies with Elizabeth Hurley, George Clooney, Jennifer Connelly and Jennifer Lopez? - Ice Cube What song is a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson? - Nightshift by The Commodores Name a popular group for each of the following that has a hyphen (-) in their name: Girl group from the '60s Rock group from the '70s Rock group from the '90s and '00s. - The Shangri-Las, Bachman-Turner-Overdrive, Blink-182. This is where it gets a little subjective. We gave full credit for T-Rex, and partial credit for Sleater-Kinney. A lot of people got The Shangri-Las. What Jewish singer wrote a religious rock song that was a hit in the '70s? - Norman Greenbaum - "Spirit In The Sky" Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan were popular guesses. What acapella song became a hit when a dance beat was added to it 3 years later? - "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega What still-active British band lost their guitarist when he disappeared in 1995? - The Manic Street Preachers Richey Edwards disappeared, but his body was never recovered. Thanks to everyone who took the quiz, and be sure to take the new one here.
  21. This movie is great. I loved the effects and the story came together very well. It dropped us off where the first one started. Here's me nitpicking: Natalie Portman is a great actress, but she is horrible in this. She's way to girl-next-door (Garden State) to play a princess with cheesy dialogue. The casting people probably didn't know she would turn out like this, so you can't blame them. The lava scene where Obi-Wan and Anakin fight looked cheesy. When they were floating around, it looked like they were doing it in front of a blue screen. Did anyone else love it when Yoda waved his paw and wiped out the 2 dudes guarding the emporor?
  22. We are accepting articles for Artistfacts. The reasoning is that people should have a place to write a few paragraphs about a singer or band and have a happy place for it. If you'd like to write one, go to any Artistfacts page and click the "Write an Article" link. To see an example, check out The Doors.
  23. We changed up the green underline code so it will hit a broader range of subjects. There's only so many times you want to look for more info on The Beatles. If you see an underlined word that looks interesting, give it a click and check it out.
  24. We did an update last night, so I'm proud to say that Hollaback girl is in the database: http://www.songfacts.com/detail.lasso?id=4533 ::
  25. I've never seen this movie. Anyone else think it has something to do with Hotel California?: Some of the lyrics bring up images from the Tennessee Williams/John Huston movie "Night of the Iguana", in particular the "pretty, pretty boys" dancing in the courtyard. Made in 1964, the movie could easily have been seen by members of the band.
