audioslave Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 The original version in 1961 by the TOkens then it was redone - some new lyrics for the Lion King and performed by Lebo M. Colors
Guest Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 I thought for years that it was the Four Seasons but it turned out to be the Tokens. The song was originally a native song.
surfingbetty Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 They might be giants have parts of this song in the chorus of one of their songs. i think it's called the guitar or something. it's really cute.
Jimmy1104 Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 In the early seventies a remake of the Tokens "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" was made. I believe the guy's name was Robert John. Can anyone confirm this?
DiggsUK Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 We had a very dodgy version in the UK by a band called 'Tight Fit'. Don't bother checking this one out! Regards

Charles H. Gabriel Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 "Lion," in its original African version, was called "Mbube," and was recorded as early as 1939. Pete Seeger popularized the song as "Wimoweh" and cut it with the Weavers in 1952 on Decca. The Weavers' version is VERY close to the Tokens' 1961 version--and much better, in my opinion. The Kingston Trio also did a pre-Tokens version (in 1959).
