MindCrime
They're named after New York City, not the state of New York. Same with most of the sport teams called New York.
RonJonSurfer
When it was first announced that the Giants were moving to New Jerseu, I local store put out Tee-shirts that said "New Jersey Giants". I loved that shirt...only to find out that when the move happened, the name change wasn't following. I've heard a number of reasons over the years, the main being something about the NFL charter. However, if you are a major sports franchise, you want the New York in your name. The basketball Nets used to be the New York Nets, but when they moved to Jersey they took the name. Now that they plan to move back to NY (Brooklyn) they've already shed NJ on away uniforms.
RonJonSurfer
p.s. Same thing for the Jets, but nobody cares about them. They've shared Giants Stadium as a home for years and will share the new stadium when it opens next year. It won't be Giants Stadium, not sure what it will be called!
