Green Day is still rockin' after 15 years

The band played an intimate show Wednesday night at the new P.C. Richard & Son Theater in Manhattan.

It's been a decade and a half since a group of sarcastic punk-rockers released their album Dookie to overwhelming commercial success - to date the album has sold upwards of 15 million copies worldwide - and though they are now a group of seasoned professionals, Green Day proved last night that they've not only still got it, but they've got it better than ever before.

The band delivered a stellar rock concert at the brand new P.C. Richard and Son Theater in Manhattan's TriBeCa neighborhood last night to a small, albeit enthusiastic, crowd of 200 that included lucky contest winners and many a superfan.

Green Day's latest album, 21st Century Breakdown, is currently perched atop the Billboard album chart, and has received early critical acclaim that has compared the punk-rock veterans to the likes of The Who, Queen, Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon. The effort is packaged as a three-part rock opera that is essentially, like it's predecessor, American Idiot, socio-political commentary that represents a general disdain for the state of the union.

But all comparisons aside, the rock opera played like a true rock show, complete with screaming fans throwing roses onto the stage and one lucky girl even getting the chance to sing the first verse of a song she knew by heart standing next to Billie Joe. Just because he's not quite your typical 20-something punk kid any longer doesn't mean he's lost his touch... last night he made plenty of girls swoon with his impressive vocal chops and command of the intimate venue.

The band has certainly withstood the test of time, maturing both physically and musically in a way that is making believers out of rock aficionados that didn't give Green Day a chance a decade ago. Billie Joe Armstrong has said that they work harder than every other band out there, and that hard work definitely shows.

They peppered in a few old songs, including American Idiot's title track, but mostly kept the concert a showcase for their new material. And although they put on a fantastic (and fantastically loud) performance, this concertgoer couldn't help itching to belt out the chorus of "Basketcase" like it was 1995.

Green Day's arena tour kicks off in October.
