Farin
[smaller]Sean Michaels | guardian.co.uk | Monday 29 December 2008 | Link [/smaller] Mariah Carey has been criticised by scientists for her "misleading claims" about the nature of the universe. But mostly they're just irritated by her poor maths. Carey is among the celebrities recently slammed by Sense About Science (SAS), a smarty-pants charity. The problem stems from E=MC2, the singer's 2008 album. Asked about the meaning of its title, Carey didn't wax lyrical about Einstein, physics or special relativity. Instead she said the formula stood for "emancipation equals Mariah Carey times two". "The 'two' in the equation means C squared, not MC multiplied by two," mathematician Dr David Leslie explained to the BBC. Given Carey's intended meaning, he said, she should have called it E=MCC, or perhaps "emancipation equals Mariah Carey Carey". Ellen Raphael, UK director of SAS, emphasised that they did not expect people to know "everything" about science. "The problem comes when [celebrities] don't consider checking it or asking a few questions before they speak out," she said, adding that celebrities' incorrect statements "travel widely" and "add disproportionately to the stock of misinformation that we all then have to wade through to make sense of a subject". Other stars to receive the SAS spanking include chef Delia Smith, who encouraged people to cut sugar entirely from their diet, and actor Tom Cruise, who called psychiatry "a crime against humanity". Ombre Vivante
It really should read E=MC^2, if they really want to square the "C," or else the "2" should be superscripted. Otherwise Mariah has the right meaning. What the hell is this dude smokin'? I agree with Tom Cruise when it comes to psychiatry.

What the hell is this dude smokin'? it's VERY obvious that she's referring to Einstein's formula, and with that she got it wrong... in notation AND meaning
TheLizard
E=2(MC) ?
The Seeker
I don't quite see why emancipation equals Mariah Carey anyway.
TheLizard
Apparently it equals two of her. Maybe she's making a pro-cloning statement. Deep stuff.

Ombre Vivante
Apparently it equals two of her. Maybe she's making a pro-cloning statement. Deep stuff. Two of her would still fall way short of a complete human brain
edna
Deep discussion about Mariah Carey´s brain... that´s another of the reasons why I love this place...
Viaene
By the time a regular Mariah Carey fan understands Einstein's theory, he/she will probably use the formula correctly
