The song reaches #2. 1957: Elvis Presley had his draft notice served on him for the US Army. 1964: The Beatles fourth album Beatles For Sale started a seven-week run at No.1 on the UK album charts. 1969: Mick Jagger was fined £200 plus 50 guineas costs at Marlborough Magistrates Court for illegal possession of cannabis. 1993: Michael Clarke of The Byrds died of liver failure aged 49. 2000: 10,000 Maniacs guitarist Robert Buck died.

December 15: 1962: Bill Wyman made his live debut with The Rolling Stones at Putney Youth Club, London. 1977: The Who perform a secret concert for longstanding fan club members and Jeff Stein's movie cameras at London's Shepperton Studios. The footage appears in Stein's The Kids Are Alright , his feature-length documentary. 1979: Pink Floyd started a five-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with "Another Brick In The Wall, (part 2)".

December 14: 1959: A report by the Ohio State University Research Center states that though rock & roll is the overwhelming favorite of 14 to 18 year olds, more adults aged 19 to 70 list it as their least favorite form of music. 1968: Marvin Gaye scored his first US No.1 single when "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" started a five week run at the top. It was Marvin's 15th solo hit and also his first UK No.1 single in March 69. 1968: Tommy James and the Shondells' "Crimson & Clover" is released 1969: The Jackson Five made their first network television appearance in the US when they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. 1974: David Crosby and Graham Nash perform together in San Francisco at a benefit concert for the United Farm Workers and Project Jonah, a whale protection media project. 1974: Styx' "Lady" is released. 1980: At Yoko Ono's request, at 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, John Lennon fans around the world mourn him with ten minutes of silent prayer. In New York over 100,000 people converge in Central Park in tribute and in Liverpool, a crowd of 30,000 gathers outside of St. George's Hall on Lime Street. 1985: James Taylor married actress Kathryn Walker. 1999: Paul McCartney, along with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Deep Purple's Ian Paice, performed at the Cavern Club for the first time since his days with the Beatles. The concert is broadcast live over the Internet.

Jimi Hendrix made his TV debut, being paid the fee £91.8's & 5d, also on the same show was Marc Bolan. 1975: Chicago started a five-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with Chicago IX - Chicago's Greatest Hits , the groups fifth No.1 album. 1976: Ex-Procul Harum guitar player Robin Trower's fifth solo album, Long Misty Days , goes gold. His third solo LP, For Earth Below , went gold earlier in the year.

December 12: 1943: Dickey Betts, guitarist for the Allman Brothers, is born. 1963, The Beatles were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'I Want To Hold Your Hand', the groups third No.1 and this year?s Christmas No.1. 1964: The Righteous Brothers "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" is released. 1967: A London Appeals Court commutes Brian Jones' nine-month prison stay for possession of cannabis after hearing testimony from three psychiatrists that Jones is "an extremely frightened young man" and could not stand nine months behind bars. He was instead fined £1,000 and put on probation for three years. 1985: Keyboardist Ian Stewart, an original member of the Rolling Stones, died. 2003, Mick Jagger became a Sir after being knighted by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace.
  8. Steve Forbert is a singer/songwriter from Mississippi who released his debut album Alive on Arrival in 1978 and due to his lyrics was hailed as the "new" Bob Dylan. His most successful album was Jackrabbit Slim (1979), which made it to the Top 20 in the US. I enjoy his folk-rock styled music, especially songs like "Romeo's Tune" and "It Isn't Gonna Be That Way".   11. December 10: 1967: The Steve Miller Blues Band, an unrecorded San Francisco group signs with Capitol Records for an unheard of $750,000. In doing so, the group drops the "Blues" from its name. 1984: The group assembled by Bob Geldof, Band-Aid releases the single "Do They Know It's Christmas". The proceeds of the song will go to famine relief. And Bob Geldof is eventually knighted on behalf of his efforts. 1991: Legendary rock & roll deejay, and in fact the man who coined the phrase "Rock & Roll", Alan Freed is posthumously awarded a Hollywood Walk of Fame Star. 1999: Rick Danko guitarist and singer with The Band died in his sleep.
  12. December 8: 1961: "Surfin'," the Beach Boys first recording, is released by Candis Records, a small L.A. based company. The song was written by Brian Wilson and his cousin Mike Love and recorded with Brian's brothers, Carl and Dennis and their friend Alan Jardine -- Carl playing acoustic guitar, Al on double bass and Brian keeping time on a garbage can. 1967: Traffic's Mr. Fantasy LP is released. 1973: Roxy Music had their first UK No.1 album when Stranded went to the top for 1 week. 1979, Styx went to No.1 on the US singles chart with "Babe", the groups only US No.1, a No.6 hit in the UK. 1975: A Night of the Hurricane benefit show at Madison Square Garden brings the Rolling Thunder Revue to a climax. In addition to Bob Dylan and company, Muhammad Ali, Roberta Flack and others show-up. The highlight is when a phone call from "Hurricane" Carter reaches the Garden stage. The show raises $100,000 for legal fees for Carter and alleged accomplice John Artis. R.I.P. John Lennon

It replaced their first album Please Please Me which had been at the top since it's release 30 weeks previously. 1974: Carl Douglas started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with "Kung Fu Fighting". The song was recorded in 10 minutes, started out as a B-side and went on to sell over 10 million copies 1977: inventor Dr. Peter Carl Goldmark was killed in a car crash aged 71. Goldmark invented the long-playing microgroove record in 1945 that went on to revolutionize the way people listened to music. 1979: The Police had their second UK No.1 single with "Walking on the Moon". 1991: U2 went to No.1 on the US album charts with Achtung Baby . 1993: Manic Street Preachers co-manager Philip Hall died from cancer.

The title track becomes Miller's first chart-topping hit. 1975: Paul Simon's Still Crazy After All These Years album hits #1. 1980: John Lennon mixes Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice." It is the last time he would be in a studio.

  19. Like many people I'll listen to whatever I'm in the mood for. Sometimes, if I've heard a bit of a song I like on the radio or TV I'll have to play the whole thing. Other times though I'll listen to pretty much anything: I can go right from James Taylor to Led Zeppelin to some classical music. Also, I go through little bouts where I want to listen to a certain band or album a lot. I'd love to have a much bigger album collection and I'm hoping to get a bunch more soon. I store what I do have alphabetically by artist.
