  2. They were a great group. Some of my favourite Beach Boy tunes are God Only Knows, Wouldn't It Be Nice, Fun,Fun,Fun, Good Timin', Sloop John B, Dance, Dance, Dance and Come Go With Me.
  3. An interesting list. I am unfamiliar with many of the songs on the list and I vehemently disagree with some selections, but obviously an articulate and well thought-out exercise.
  4. 1. Come And Get Your Love - Redbone 2. Maggie May - Rod Stewart
  5. I was disappointed in the list, because I think many songs which made the list are inferior to many which did not. However, I certainly do not boo any of the selections or the people who made them. One of the things that makes Songfacts great is the diversity of musical opinion. Besides, if everyone liked the same songs as everyone else, it would be a boring world.
  6. Sorry, but I absolutely loathe "reality shows". I've never watched one and I see no reason to start now. If I want to watch people make fools of themselves, all I have to do is drive in Calgary.

  10. I have five of the albums you list in my collection of about 400 LP's. I also have about 150 cassettes and 350 CD's. I still listen to my LP's frequently, because many of them are unavailable on CD.
  11. I'm so sorry to hear about your health problems. I'm not a regular church goer, but I do believe in God and you and your family will definitely be in my family's prayers. You must have a fairly liberal definition of crabby behaviour because IMO, you have been nothing less than your usual cordial, good-natured self these last few weeks. God bless you, my friend!

  14. Well, I guess it's time to weigh in with my two cents worth. As far as the first article regarding world opinion, I couldn't agree more. I equate world opinion with the United Nations, one of the most useless and partisan organizations in the world. General Romeo Dallaire of Canada warned the United Nations for months about the escalating tensions in Rwanda and Burundi and his fears that widespread killing could break out at any time. What did the United Nations do? Nothing. They virtually dismissed Dallaire's concerns and look what happened. What has the United Nations or "world opinion" done about the genocide going on in the Sudan. (Genocide, I might add, being committed largely by Arab militias against black Sudanese). Nothing. The United Nations and The European Union have been vociferous in their condemnation of Israel and strangely silent about the atrocities being committed by Hezbollah. Israel is the only really democratic nation in the Middle East. It is surrounded by countries that want nothing less than its utter destruction. In the past, everytime Israel has made concessions or shown restraint, it has been rewarded by rocket attacks and suicide bombings. Kofi Annan made the outrageous statement that Israel was deliberately targeting UN workers and civilians. What utter nonsense. Believe me, if Israel had been deliberately targeting civilians in Lebanon, the death toll would have been 50,000 and not six or seven hundred. And it is a little difficult to avoid civilian casualties when your "courageous" enemy hides its rocket emplacements in the midst of civilians, many of whom were aiding the Hezbollah guerillas. As for those who suggest that violence always begets violence, did they not learn anything from history? Neville Chamberlain tried to negotiate with and appease Hitler and we ended up with millions of dead people. Initially, the United States was not going to get involved in the Second World War. For its neutrality it was rewarded with the cowardly attack on Pearl Harbour. Perhaps they should just have politely asked the Japanese to reconsider their intention to annex huge portions of American territory and kill large numbers of Americans. I abhor violence, but I abhor moral cowardice even more. Israel and the United States are not perfect, but they are two of the greatest forces for good in the world today. If the Palestinians are tired of having their movements restricted and being treated with suspicion (my heart's breaking here), perhaps they should stop strapping bombs to their children and sending them to blow up innocent Israeli's. And if Muslims in Europe and North America don't want to be treated with suspicion, perhaps they should do more to root out the terrorists who are recruiting their children and raising money within their communities for Al Quaeda, Hamas and Hezbollah. After all, it's not Budhists, Mormons or Druids who are killing "infidels" in Bali, Spain, England, Iraq, India and The Philippines.
  15. If by strapping you mean someone who needs his tummy strapped in by a corset, then I am indeed strapping!! It's so nice to be considered young for a change. I work with a lot of twenty and thirty somethings who sometimes make me feel like Methuselah. I guess you're only as old as you feel. Right now I feel like a youngster. My wife is in Kitchener, Ontario this weekend giving a lecture at a biomechanics conference, so I am a single parent for 2 days. I took the kids to an amusement park and for a few hours I felt like a kid again. Woohoo!!
  16. 1. Who'll Stop The Rain - CCR 2. Unforgettable - Nat King Cole 3. Sounds Of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel 4. Rocket Man - Elton John 5. Crimson & Clover - Tommy James & The Shondelles 6. Mrs. Robinson - Simon & Garfunkel 7. San Francisco - Scott McKenzie 8. Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty 9. Wouldn't It Be Nice - The Beach Boys 10. 17. Which is as it should be, Shawna! As I've said before, you have excellent taste in music.
  18. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, Moto! You make a lovely couple. So you're getting married in Madison! My wife and I lived there for 3 years back in the late nineties. She taught at the University of Wisconsin. It is a beautiful city. We used to kayak or bike every weekend during the Spring and Summer. The beer at The Angelic brew pub was amazing. Every Friday night after work was beer and brat night. Such fond memories. Our son was born in Madison and we plan to take him and his sister back for a visit in the near future.

  20. Good smells: lilac jasmine gardenia honeysuckle fresh baked bread or cookies bacon frying onions frying (even though I can't eat them anymore) limes gin(because it smells like limes to me) any robust red wine lamb being barbecued fresh rosemary or thyme (memories of Greece) fresh nutmeg or cloves (memories of Grenada) an ocean breeze Bad smells: A pulp mill or an outhouse. They smell much the same. Cat pee Stale cigarette or cigar smoke Fresh asphalt Railroad ties that smell of creosote Rotting chicken Rotting seal (My wife and I came upon a rather large one in Mazatlan) I guess we can generalize and say any rotting carcass.
  21. Diggs makes some good points. American foreign policy has often been ill-conceived, inconsistent and heavy handed. However, I think it is simplistic to suggest that the rise of Islamic fundamentalism is largely the result of American and British foreign policy. The Islamic fundamentalists, fanatics, terrorists, call them what you will, are angry, hateful people. They believe that anyone who doesn't share their narrow-minded, intolerant and rigid beliefs is an enemy who deserves to be killed. Just look at what they have done in the Sudan, India and the Philippines. Western foreign policy has merely provided a new target for their rage and xenophobia. They hate what we have achieved and our entire way of life. They will do anything to undermine that way of life. Unfortunately, these radical beliefs cannot flourish in a vacuum. Many Muslim communities have tacitly or, through indifference, allowed this cancer to grow in their midst. Western governments have failed miserably to engage the vast majority of moderate Muslims and seek their help in stamping out religious extremism. Western governments must try to work cooperatively with the more liberal Muslim states to stamp out terrorism. Heavy handed, big brother diplomacy will only foster more intolerance and exacerbate the problem. And for those who think that only the United States and Britain have much to fear from terrorists, I believe the attacks in Bali, Madrid and Egypt have demontrated the naivete of that notion.
  22. I'm with the Lizard. Bond, James Bond. Beautiful women, beautiful, exotic locations and fast cars. What more could one ask for? And no matter how many times you get your heiny kicked, you will always get the last laugh as you consign the bad guy to oblivion. And as an added bonus, you get to spout some really bad puns.
  23. I can listen to almost any kind of music, but I could never be involved with anyone who likes rap and/or hip-hop. Fortunately, my wife and I have similar musical tastes. And she is very tolerant. When I listen to Johnny Winter, AC/DC, The Scorpions or Blue Oyster Cult, she leaves the room. And I'm reasonably understanding as well. When she listens to Kenny G or Keith Jarratt, I put on my I Pod and go work in the garden.
  24. Midnight Rider - The Allman Brothers Band Everything I Own - Bread
