Peggy Sue Peggy Sue Got Married... Buddy Holly

The wonderful and criminally neglected Australian STephen Cummings has songs on two of his early albums about the singer, his friend, and a waitress named Jane. The songs are "You Jane", and "Melancholy Hour". I put those albums up there in the same class and categry as Prefab Sprout's early classics. Highly recommended for any Australian out there... LBBB

I suspect that listening to the unfamiliar songs is a vital part. I spend too much time on that bit ;-) L, L. -

One day I'm going to actually vote in time. I do the nominating thing, but I never quite make it to the voting thing... -
New category suggestion: Self-referential songs
LeeBB replied to Heard It On The XM's topic in Questions and Answers
Another paradoxical lyric, from Pulp "Something Changed": Where would I be now if we'd never met? Would I be singing this song to someone else instead? A very beautiful song. LBB -
Umm, generally I would say that Keira is a beautiful woman, but that photo is err... well, I reckon Jermaine is a bazillion times hotter. L, L.

Wings "Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five" Song Meaning
LeeBB replied to Jk's topic in Questions and Answers
I know that that is probably the accepted wisdom, but I think it's a massive over-simplification. Paul could write lyrics as perfect as anything John could manage (see Eleanor Rigby, The End, Penny Lane, She's Leaving Home, Fool On The Hill, etc etc etc etc), and John was pretty fine with a melody too (Imagine, Strawberry Fields, In My Life,...). You can try to pigeon-hole them, but they really don't deserve it. Love, LBB -
Ahh, one of the comments reminds me that when I used to go through my big brother's music collection, he had these cassette covers that he typed up on some old typewriter with a very flowery font, and I used to wonder what kind of music this Leo Zeppelin played... LBB

Australian bushfire death toll its worst ever
LeeBB replied to Farin's topic in News and Current Events
Queensland is HUGE (four times the size of California), and Brisbane is tucked down in the bottom corner, sitting on top of lots of nice hills. The floods are up in the north and in the central west, about 1000 miles away. So if he stays at home, Darryl should be okay ;-) Anyway, it looks like the floods are a relatively minor matter (compared to the Victorian bushfires at least). There is scarcely a mention in the Australian news media. Floods are fairly common up in the north of Queensland, which is in the tropics after all, and this is the wet season. LBBB -

Australian bushfire death toll its worst ever
LeeBB replied to Farin's topic in News and Current Events
Well, that may be true, but in general this is a pretty disaster-free place to live. We get the odd cyclone up North, bushfires of course, and that's about it. No tsunamis, no big earthquakes and mud-slides, no tornados... Of course, nine of the world's ten most dangerous snakes live here, in my backyard in fact, but that's a different matter ;-) And yes, I believe Katie is here in New South Wales, which is not where the horrible fires have been over the last week. LBB btw, Queensland borders Victoria much like Alaska borders Washington State;-)
