  4. The Bakersfield Californian | Tuesday, Nov 4 2008 5:45 PM Last Updated: Wednesday, Nov 5 2008 11:58 AM Merle Haggard’s publicist released a statement Tuesday about the singer’s cancer surgery at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital following The Californian’s report of his condition. Sources who wished to remain anonymous said the singer underwent surgery Monday to remove a lung tumor discovered in May, at the time believed to be a benign growth. Haggard, who initially refused treatment, was in stable condition and in good spirits, they said. His publicist, Tresa Redburn, said Haggard is resting and recovering in a “Bakersfield hospital.†“It was discovered during a biopsy that he had non-small cell lung cancer, which has a far better cure rate than that of the small (oat) cell cancer,†according to the e-mailed statement. “The doctors believe they have removed it all, but tests are still ongoing. One pathologist that reviewed the biopsy noted that very often surgery cures this form of the disease.†Redburn said Haggard and his family request privacy at this time, but “prayers and good thoughts would be very much appreciated.†The Official Website of Merle Haggard
  5. I understand completly what you're saying Ken. It's kinda'scary looking at the great divide between blue and red ( North & South) on the map. And the popular vote wasn't nearly as lopsided as the E.College. But failure is relative. No President is 100% successful, and sometimes getting nothing done is maybe better than doing the wrong thing (i.e. recent history). A President Obama's biggest challenge may be in tempering the grandiose aspirations and proposals from his own party. And, always, there's that un-spoken undercurrent of irrational (but maybe natural) resent/revenge from the far corners. _____________( )_____________
  6. /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ What person could have listened to 'Who Are the Brain Police?" or "Hungry Freaks, Daddy" in '66, or anytime since, and not have been permanently altered??? It is sad .... but Jimmy wouldn't want that. Be happy when you hear him on some of the most brilliantly demented music ever made. ------"you're probably wondering why I'm here"-----
  7. ________ __________ Agreed. Still, a good chunk of America already does. And it was disturbing how sometimes this campaign seemed to show sexism as even more powerfull than racism. And a lot of it may have to do with the way women see themselves, and just how afraid men of all races can be of a strong woman! But it's a process.... !!!! <> !!

  10. Nov. 5, 2008, 9:27 AM EST LONDON (AP) -- Jimmy Carl Black, drummer, vocalist and self-anointed "Indian of the group" of Frank Zappa's The Mothers of Invention, has died at age 70. Black, a native of El Paso, Texas, died Saturday of cancer in Siegsdorf, Germany, according to Roddie Gilliard, a British musician who performed with him. Born James Inkanish Jr. on Feb. 1, 1938, Black had Cheyenne Indian ancestry through both parents. He changed his name legally to Jimmy Carl Black in 1958, adapting the name of his stepfather, Carl Black. He was playing in the Soul Giants in Los Angeles in 1964 when the group recruited Zappa. "He joined the band and three days later he took it over," Black once said. Zappa changed the group's name and, according to Black, boasted that "if you guys learn my music, I'll make you rich and famous." "He took care of half of that promise, because I'm damn sure I didn't get rich," Black recalled. He credited Zappa, who died in 1993, with introducing him to modern classical music and teaching him complex rhythms. Black appeared on Mothers albums including "Freak Out," "Cruising with Ruben and the Jets" and "Burnt Weenie Sandwich." He played trumpet as well as drumming on the 1968 album "We're Only In It for the Money," and also introduced his catchphrase: "Hi boys and girls, I'm Jimmy Carl Black, I'm the Indian of the group." Zappa disbanded the Mothers in 1969, and Black's career thereafter was not lucrative. A recent remix of some of Black's work was titled "Can I Borrow a Couple of Bucks Until the End of the Week?" The band members were shocked when Zappa fired them. "We all just got a phone call from him stating that he had decided to break up the band and your salary has ended as of last week. That is pretty cold," Black said once in an interview. Black later appeared as Lonesome Cowboy Burt in Zappa's film "200 Motels," and in 1980 he worked on five songs from Zappa's "You Are What You Is." "I had a really good time with Frank at that time and he really treated me great. I even got paid," Black said. Following the breakup of the Mothers, Black formed a band named Geronimo Black after his youngest son. The band's 1972 album was not a commercial success, and Black went to work in a doughnut shop in Anthony, Texas. In 1980, he teamed with ex-Mothers Bunk Gardner and Don Preston in The Grandmothers, a band that broke up and reformed several times over two decades. During one musical lull, Black formed a house-painting company in Austin, Texas, with Arthur Brown. They also made an album, "Brown, Black and Blue." Black moved to Italy in 1992, then to Germany in 1995, and has appeared as a singer with The Muffin Men, a Liverpool band that specialized in the music of Zappa and Captain Beefheart. Black is survived by his wife, Monika, whom he married in 1995 following the death of his second wife; three sons and three daughters. A fundraiser planned in London for Black will go ahead on Sunday, Gilliard said Wednesday. ——— Jimmy Carl Black web site
  11. It's almost a new day in America. Great concession speech by Sen. McCain, best talk of his whole campaign. He seemed relieved.
  12. Hey, at least I'm not a tadpole (not that there's anything wrong with that). I want to earn my fins just like the nextfish. ++++ ++++
  13. I guess it depends on how you define leader, lot's of different ideas about that and there are lot's of different sorts of leaders. And a leader, after all, is kind of a collective fashion choice for societies. The first impression we want to make. An idealized figurehead to represent the better-selves we wish we could be. It's always good to try and see yourself as others see you, so it's interesting to hear how the U.S. Presidency is percieved so strongly abroad. Forgotten, maybe sometimes is that the U.S. President (and Vice President for that matter) is really something of a tool for a much larger party machine. And that the U.S. President does not have the individual powers held by leaders in some other parts of the world. But I'm sure much of the world is tired of the same old presidential clothes we've been wearing for 8 years now, so are we. So here's to a brand new look! And to whatever it may say to the world about us. Just remember, America is still America, whoever the President may be. And if the suit don't fit, we'll get a new one in four years. Because often the new boss is a lot like the old boss and you must always be most careful with your wishing, but go ahead and wish anyway.
  14. Thank You! Thank you! And it's not like I don't appreciate, but I was just kidding around! I was perfectly happy as a guppie working my way up the food chain, really! This is why they say careful what you wish for (or speak out loud)
  15. It's un-natually warm for November here, now. Forecast says days to come at almost 70 F (if I knew what that was in C I'd say, but I don't) All I know is that it's weird. All the tiny flying insects have suddenly come back to life in this strange false spring... none of us know quite what to do. We were just sharpening our snow shovels and putting in salt, now who knows? With 'the economy' revealed as a house of cards, we're all justa bit on edge anyway, so any little thing out of the ordinary, like good weather, kind of scares me. So, that's the weather for now. Next, just another day! Oh. and another new boss, just the same, but completly different, than the old boss, right after this .... __________ _________ VOTE LIBERTARIAN

  20. Thanks Cyber, Rolf! Right, now I remember A fun song with some interesting and very 'Down Under' lyrics There's been a lot of great songs from Australia over the years, one of my all-time faves is "Blue Sky Mine" x Midnight Oil :guitar: "The candy store paupers lie to the share holders They're crossing their fingers they pay the truth makers The balance sheet is breaking up the sky So I'm caught at the junction still waiting for medicine The sweat of my brow keeps on feeding the engine Hope the crumbs in my pocket can keep me for another night And if the blue sky mining company won't come to my rescue If the sugar refining company won't save me Who's gonna save me? But if I work all day..." ---------------------
  21. That's why it pays to pay attention.... Kudos! for catching that, didn't even notice it before ______________________ _______________________
  22. Worldwide? Popular, as in 'well known'? Then yes (and stop frowning, it's a happy thing) maybe The Wiggles right now. They recently toured through here! Anyone who has had young children around the last five years or so, is probably way too familiar with their music! All time, for sure AC/DC and BeeGees. Who did that song "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Jack"?

  24. /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ Great Vortex! I can see how constantly changeing weather could be an annoyance but it's funny because i think if you had 4 seasons in a day then you'd have at least a little summer in every day, as opposed to 4 or so straight months of winter, so it sounds good to me. Thats the thing about the weather, it's one of those things almost everybody everywhere, no matter the relative climate, gripes about all the time. It's too hot. It's too cold. It's too hot and too cold. Too wet, dry, windy, whatever. The only time we're really alltogether happy with the weather is when it's perfect, which is fairly rare. Most of the time, in a thousand different languages, we're curseing it's inconvenience! While fearing inside, as we know, weather is almost the only thing on this earth capable of overcoming all of our devices. So that's your weather report and now the nudes ... errr ... news! :sleepy:
