  1. Johnny, johnny, johnny.....I really don't have the faintest idea what you're on about.... Anybody else any the wiser???
  2. Thanks for that link, psycho. Now I know what my phobias are actually called, may I be the first to the "confessional"? Astraphobia / Astrapophobia/ Brontophobia / Keraunophobia: all mean "fear of thunder and lightning" Spheksophobia: fear of wasps
  3. Shawna, Shawna, Shawna, have no fear of using words of 6+ letters, I will not haul you before the "vocabulary & grammar magistrates". I like long words and wordplay and heck, in our brief time as SongFacts acquaintances, I kinda like you. I also like bugging johnnyguitar : a sentiment which appears to be reciprocated. Thing is, johnny gives the impression of being an articulate, well-educated man with a certain mellifluous charm and undoubtedly a rapier-like wit: the original "silver-tongued cavalier" in fact. But if he's going to bandy around big words like "oxymoron" when what he actually means is its opposite ,"tautology", I don't have any qualms about putting him straight. Yes, sometimes I'm pernickety over his errors, but this one was pretty "glaring" to me, in my Asperger's world. In any case, he's swift enough to address my perceived inadequacies, so , y'know...just see it as a peculiar form of playfulness... As for your fear of meeting me in a professional context: I shouldn't worry too much about that one: geography and professional background would render that unlikely. However, I'd like to think that if we met in a non-professional context,(equally unlikely...) you'd find I'm not the asocial, challenging prospect you might imagine.
  4. WHAT?! I'm on the "One-Hit Wonders" thread???! Bollocks! I thought I was on "Sing The Conversation"...
  5. Very famous song: "Regrets...I've had a few...but then again...etc, etc" Thought everyone had heard it. No offence intended.
  6. Is it The Teardrop Explodes? On the assumption it is, I'll set another one.... G------S--- / --A-- / --- / --E / ------S / -I-- Its a group.
  7. I take it you mean "that's tautology", rather than "an oxymoron". An oxymoron is a figure of speech which combines contradictory terms so as to form an expressive phrase or epithet. e.g. fresh-frozen, military intelligence, "quality-time with the kids", etc. (the opposite of what you did, in fact...) Do you keep making these mistakes on purpose, just to keep me busy?
  8. Cut and pasted this review I found (at random) on the web; just in case anybody thinks I'm pulling your leg about The Cocteau Twins Not the best piece of writing you'll ever read, but you get the idea about The Cocteaus.... (Btw,..when the writer says "Nirvana-like" he is referring to "spiritual bliss" rather than Kurt Cobain et al...) Unfortunately I can't remember the title of their "Singles Collection", though you could easily find out by checking Amazon. However some of their best singles include: "Pearly Dewdrops Drops", "Sugar Hiccup" "Aikea Guinea". Listen to anything by them, its bound to be pretty good...Liz Fraser has the most wonderful voice you ever heard....
  9. Are you casting aspersions upon my integrity? :beady:
  10. Re: Paul Young ..... Well...I was basing my "seems like a nice chap" judgement on his cheery demeanour when he appeared on "Never Mind The Buzzcocks" a year or so back (TV music quiz show). I had no idea, but I might have guessed, that johnny had met him close up in his local supermarket.... :beady:
  11. Lorks!! Paul Young was a one-hit wonder??? Where? That's where I want to be! My memory of early 80s UK is of a hit-parade blighted by the virtually permanent presence of Mr Young: a lovely fellow 'in real life' and a wonderful singer, but tragically bereft of taste. (I say that, but at least two of the songs he covered - "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Love Of The Common People" were terrific , originally) Apart from these tracks, he thrilled us all with the following... (some of which must surely have been international hits).. Come Back and Stay (for Good This Time) I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down Senza Una Donna (with Zucchero) and the execrable "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home). Paul's classic album "No Parlez" is now available again in a million charity shops.....
  12. At the risk of being repetitive , The Cocteau Twins album I would most confidently recommend is VICTORIALAND
  13. It was probably Foxy that mentioned Enya; I believe she's a big fan. The Cocteau Twins were a "shimmering & ethereal" band from the UK, formed early 80s and continued on well into the 90s. they put out plenty of music during that time and there are a couple of "compilation CDs" that might serve as a good introductions to them. My favourite album of theirs which I've already strongly recommended earlier in this thread, is called "Victorialand": that's where I recommend you start, as I find it astonishingly beautiful... (When i abbreviate their name to "The Cocteaux", this is but a little jest in acknowledgement of the enormously witty johnnyguitar)
  14. Fair dos then. I must admit I thought you meant the album rather than a specific track,(hence my surprise) and confess that Dire Straits is a band I've never given much time to...so ...mmm yeah, that track might well be somewhat "ethereal". Anyways, I liked the lyrical quote you cited; it surprised me pleasantly. Maybe I should give Mr Knopfler and Co. another chance? Which of my "Enya comments" did you agree with? I can't recall (or imagine) saying anything particularly complimentary about Enya: only suggested to Foxy that once she hears The Cocteau Twins she may never wish to listen to Enya again. So were you agreeing that "The Cocteaux" (thanks johnnyg) are infinitely superior to Enya (as I was obliquely hinting)?! As it happens guys and galz, I'm still waiting for "Foxy Feedback" on The Cocteau Twins....(drums fingers impatiently)
  15. Let's see. There's a theory that any individual can be linked to any other individual within "6 degrees of separation" i.e., Person knows someone,(1st degree) who in turn collaborated with someone else(2nd degree) who corresponded with someone else (3rd) who was a member of the same club as (4th)etc. So theoretically, you are 6 degrees away from George Bush. An example: me -> George Bush When I was in a band we supported Chumbawamba, so I became acquainted with their vocalist Danbert Nobacon (1) -> who, at the Brit Awards do, caused a kerfuffle by pouring water over Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott (2) -> who is Deputy to Tony Blair (3) -> who is George Dubya's pet chihuahua(4). Wow! Only 4 degrees from me to Bush! Now, I'm not a film buff, as I seldom watch any, but they invented a game called "6 degrees from Kevin Bacon" because apparently he appeared in so many damn films that they reckon everybody is "related" to him somehow or another... So this game: you take two apparently dissimilar entities (musicians / performers/whatever) and link them as described, by tracing the degrees of separation between them. Any clearer?
  16. I think maybe if Mr Diggs would intervene here... Rolf Harris to Slipknot in 6 moves: I'm sure it can be done...
  17. Chambers English Dictionary Sorry to seem picky here...Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms may be many things- in fact I'm sure it is- but I'm not sure "ethereal" is one of them. 'Course, I know this is only my opinion, but still....
  18. What can I say about the above post apart from "a thousand apologies" and an explanation?.... T'other day , having some respite from child-rearing, I had a "friend" round, ostensibly to demonstrate to me how to include images in my posts (as my attempt on "Scary Bands" had failed miserably) I introduced him to "the Joy of SongFacts". My, how we laughed at the jocular badinage between myself and johnnyguitar and Diggs' chortlesome quips. (I mentioned that I wanted to add a post on "System Of A Down"- with image- on the "Beards" thread: hence my asking his advice). I popped out to the Off-Licence for a 6-pack, leaving my friend "browsing". On my return, he told me the SOAD post was "sorted" and showed me how to revive the image I'd used in the "Scary Bands" post. The above post- undoubtedly offensive and tasteless even by my lax and inconsistent standards- did not come to my attention until an "Edit" was impossible. Boy, did I cuss my mischievous mate and his impish sense of humour?! :beady: Although I confess responsibility for several attacks on Mr.guitar's character, none as I recall, have been as savage and reprehensible as this one. I only hope some of you may have recognised that the above post reflects neither my "style" nor my normally respectful attitude to women (opposition to misogyny, etc) I offer my sincere apologies to johnnyguitar for any distress this may have caused (knowing what a soppy twat he is), and to any SF members / visitors who may have been offended. I will endeavour to ensure this does not happen again.
  19. No idea who Rolf Harris is? Now where's that "swoon" smily that johnnyguitar was requesting?......
  20. I confess I found the word "Brobdingnagian" in my thesaurus. It's the "land of giants" in Gulliver's Travels, which I've just finished reading to my son, so it seemed apposite. "Abstemious" I did know already, but I confess I only use it sparingly. Great gag, Peaches! Now, anyone ready to play "Six Degrees"? It was Rolf Harris / Slipknot , remember?
  21. Oh...it's a group. A bit obscure, to be honest ...( I thought the first two were a bit too straightforward). Never occurred to me to choose a song... I'm a bit vague on the rules of Wheel Of Fortune...I guess it's a bit like Hangman, when if you don't know the answer, you suggest a letter and if its there I fill in the appropriate blank. Am I getting warm?
  22. Sorry, I didn't look it up Das, I just happen to possess a vocabulary that verges on the Brobdingnagian.
