The Long Blondes

About a year ago, I wryly quipped something along the lines of "Arctic Monkeys, best UK album of all-time??! By the end of the year it probably won't even be the best outta Sheffield."

And it turns out I may have been right.

The Long Blondes debut album "Someone To Drive You Home" came out towards the latter end of 2006 on the prestigious and highly-reputed Rough Trade label. It's a cracker, it really is. You know how often over the years you've heard the "Could be the new Blondie" line? This time there really might be something in it. The Long Blondes are spunky and artful, "indie" yet commercial, spiky yet melodic, inclined to draw upon the sounds of 60's girl-groups / beat-groups, as well as 70s new wave/post-punk, stylish but not fashion-followers, smart, sassy and self-aware.

Stylistically they have some notes in common with other female-fronted outfits from past and present: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Elastica, Echobelly occasionally spring to mind. As well as Blondie, but that may just be in my mind. However there's something adventurous about The Long Blondes that distinguishes them from the pack. I'm convinced they're gonna be HUGE.

wow! they're great!

after the first listening, I think I like Once and Never Again best, but Appropriation and Weekend Without Makeup are cool too :)

and it's true that you can hear the influences or similarities of other bands, but that doesn't make them any less great...

I want that album!

...having said that, they probably have more in common with bands like Pulp and Franz Ferdinand; indie-ish music but injected with verve, panache, glamour, wit and a goodly dollop of pop sensibility.

Of the four tracks on their myspace page, only one is on the album. "Appropriation" isn't, unfortunately, but "Once And Never Again" is.

All of the singles whose promo vids I linked to are on the album, which maintains a consistently high standard throughout. If you liked what you heard so far, I don't think you'd be disappointed.
