Mike
I would rate Chuck Berry's "Johnny B Goode" at number 1. The innovative and exhilarating guitar work breaking ground in a new style of rock n roll and was a grand opening to so many groups and guitar players to follow. Jerry Lee Lewis's "A whole lotta shakin'" going on was also a very influential song in early rock.
JumboXL
The Kinks with the first hard-rock hit "You Really Got Me". The beginning of really LOUD music.
Batman
If you mean "rock history" then yes I would agree that Johnny B. Goode belongs at the top.

Carl
I realize the entire album qualifies, but I remember hearing Another Brick In The Wall and thinking that something really different was going on. That might be the most influential song in my history.

Mike
Hey Jude It broke a barrier. At over 7 minutes, it was one of the first "long song" to get regular and steady radio play.
JumboXL
Hmm. I wonder who came first: MacArthur Park by Richard Harris, or Hey Jude. Both over 7 minutes, both 2nd half 1968. Can't find a release date on Harris's hit. In that year I also bought America, by The Nice. Definitily somewhere in summer. (Slightly off-topic, now, I s'pose?)
