  1. I don't think I've ever met someone who doesn't like music. It's interesting though, because other art forms always have detractors. There are definitely people who just plain don't like looking at visual art. I've even met some people who refuse to read. But I've never met someone who hates music. My best guess is that if you spend enough time with any art form you'll find something you enjoy, and just by being a member of society you are exposed to a lot of music.
  2. I always find this to be a funny example, because the song Kanye "stole" from Daft Punk had already been "stolen" from Edwin Birdsong
  3. So apparently an Oregon cheerleader got knocked out cold by a water bottle thrown by an Arizona fan. Bet this won't get as much attention as Blount's punch though!
  4. Sampling isn't all about stealing, I mean in some cases it is ("Ice Ice Baby" is a popular example), but the people who do it well can take a part of a song and really mutate it into something different and oftentimes improve it. If you're doing it correctly, it's not any different than "stealing" the sound of a piano with a synthesizer.
  5. Nice list, I've got mad love for Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, so nice to see it get a high spot on your list! "Arular" is amazing as well. I love the song "Bucky Done Gun." So awesome. here's a list I made for another site, I started working on it over the summer when I briefly had a desk job. It's my 100 favorite songs from the decade. It's not 100% accurate because I limited it to 1 song per artist (I didn't want this list to be too enormous). Also, I included guilty pleasures up there with the more serious stuff because I figured why not, I would be lying to myself if I said there were a bunch of songs this decade I enjoyed more than the fantastically stupid "I'm Bout Money" by Baby D. There are only a few guilty pleasures though. And I tried to order them but it's not a great order. 1. Animal Collective - Fireworks 2. Daft Punk - One More Time 3. 6. How does sampling factor into the discussion? That specific art form has been around for nearly as long as recorded music has (sampling was invented in the 1930's, maybe earlier, and as far as I know the phonograph was invented in the late 1800's). I'm not really sure what you're trying to say about sampling, but there's really no general statement you can make about it since it has survived multiple generations and has accomplished different things in each generation.
  7. "Ooh La La" is one of my favorite songs of all time
  8. As usual, MT's got the words of wisdom!
  9. The Duck/Wildcat game last night was one of the most exciting I've ever seen. Even if you don't care about either team, I highly reccomend all college football enthusiasts watch the University of Oregon vs. Oregon State civil war game on December 3rd. The huge rivalry usually always results in a good game, but this one's going to be great because the winner represents the Pac-10 in the Rose Bowl.
  10. The only Beatles covers I like more than the originals are Earth Wind & Fire's "Got To Get You Into My Life" and Stevie Wonder's "We Can Work It Out"
  11. I don't know anything about boxing but just looking at those stats it seems like George Foreman should be higher.
  12. even most of my favorite "non-mainstream" rap was from the beginning of the decade. Here's a question...who was the best hip hop producer of the decade? I think the general consensus is that it's either Dre, Timbaland, or the Neptunes, but who's the best out of them? I'd go with the Neptunes personally.
  13. my dad's nickname for this player is "god" he is a big 49ers fan
  14. and I agree with your pro-Jack White stance
  15. I totally agree. I don't see the shame in being a singles artist. If a musician can say in 3 minutes what it takes other musicians 40 minutes to do, I think it's a positive reflection on their abilities, not a sign that they don't have what it takes to create a full, flowing album. MP3s allow good singles artists to fully focus on creating great singles rather than waste their time with album filler. It's also a good strategy to get noticed. Crystal Castles didn't become famous for putting out a really good album (although it is pretty good), they got famous for putting out some REALLY REALLY awesome singles. They just put all their effort into "Untrust Us" and "Vanished," blew up, and then worked on making a full album.
  16. I don't think anyone will remember Wolfmother, they just do what Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath did 40 years ago, except they don't do it as well.
  17. That's actually really interesting. I think Eli Roth is a genius, but that's only based off "Cabin Fever" and "Thanksgiving." I have a feeling I'd hate "Hostel."
  18. I agree that everything about the film was very interesting, and honestly I enjoyed it up until the parallel between the Nazi audience and us as an audience. It still was a very interesting point, but a point that for me kind of ruined the movie, and really a lot of action movies in general.
  19. Yeah one of my friends recently made a note on facebook where everyone lists their top 10 albums of the decade, and I was struck by how similar all our lists were. I'm not sure if there was more than one without a Radiohead appearance of some kind.
  20. Here's a top 50 albums list I made for another site. I made no attempt to be objective, this is just a list of my 50 favorite albums from the decade. Pretty much in order but the further from #1 the less I thought about its placement. 1. Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam 2. Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary 3. Animal Collective - Sung Tongs 4. Madvillain - Madvillainy 5. Radiohead - Kid A 6. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots 7. Daft Punk - Discovery 8. 21. Gucci Mane is no Andre 3000, but Big Boi is Big Boi, and an awesome song is an awesome song!
  22. Oh yeah this is looking like it's going to be a really great civil war game
  23. I'd say the biggest theme of this decade was the merging of the mainstream and underground (and this process has not been completed, I believe the trend will continue into the next decade). I mean, freaking Grizzly Bear is on the Twilight soundtrack. MIA performed at the Grammys. Animal Collective's latest album made it into the Billboard top 10. Creed tickets for their tour this summer literally sold for as low as 75 cents. It's an exciting time to be a pop music lover.
  24. I'm currently putting together a list of my top 100 songs from this decade for another site (one per artist) and I'm almost done (I've been spending 5 minutes at a time on it every once in a while since the summer). The ordering after #25 really vague but still. When I'm done with it I'll post it here.
  25. Yeah that could be a major part of it. Some actors are able to break out of it though. Leonardo DiCapprio is a really good actor in my opinion, even though he got famous by being good looking. My main problem with Pitt is that he plays roughly the same character in so many movies, and I'm tired of the character.
