  1. And now for something completely different: Reuben James In my song you live again And the phrase that I rhyme Are just a footstep out of time From the time when I knew you Reuben james Reuben james, all the folks around hadison county Cussed your name Youre just a no-count, sharecropping colored man Youd steal anything you can And everybody laid the blame on reuben james Reuben james, for you still walk Over fields of my mind Faded shirt, weathered brow Colored hands upon the plow Loved you then and I love you now Reuben james For a grave The gossiper of hadison county died with chide Although your skin was black You were the one that didnt turn your back On the hungry white child with no name Reuben james, reuben james With your mind on the soul And a bottle in your right hand You said turn the other cheek For theres a better world awaiting for the meek In my mind these words remain from reuben james Reuben james one dark cloudy day They brought you from the field And to your lonely crambox Came just a preacher Me and the rain Just to sing one last refrain to reuben james (Performed by Kenny Rogers.) A "Guy Gabaldon" kind of song.
  2. For some odd reason, this reminds me of "Northern Exposure," specifically when Adam Ant (as Rocker "Brad Bonner") found himself in Cicely, AK. (He was supposed to be playing Sicily.)
  3. "Genius Loves Company" Ray Charles & everybody. (Not bad for a last recording.) "Last Man Standing" Jerry Lee Lewis & everybody. (Have fun with the piano Killer!) Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald Antonio Carlos Jobim & Elis Regina Willie K. & Amy Gilliom
  4. So, Paris Hilton can't have more than ONE thought "in memory" at a time? A RAM upgrade would be called for, but the manufacturer went out of business due to lack of demand for such low capacity SIMMs. :sleepy:
  5. You can fool some of the people some of the time... :sleepy:
  6. When Michelle Wie first appeared on the local golf circuit, there was much talk of "young phenom." This hype made me remember an earlier golfer who had been the darling of the Japanese media. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Baugh One can only hope that common sense breaks out before things go too far South. Looking over Laura Baugh's subsequent career, Ms. Wie should be so lucky. Only time will tell...and it's running out, fast.
  7. And now for some obscure movies and songs: "Back to Salome" from "Tin Cup" "This Little Light of Mine" from "Corrina, Corrina" "Great Balls of Fire" from "Stealing Home" "Rockin' Robin" from "Stand By Me" "Buffalo Gals" from "It's a Wonderful Life" "The Puppy Song" from "You've Got Mail" "Burn On" or "Wild Thing" from "Major League" "Jessica" from "Field of Dreams" "As Time Goes By" from "Casablanca" "Make 'em Laugh" from "Singin' In The Rain" "Moon River" from "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
  8. Too bad Paris Hilton didn't get a trip to the slammer when she was a clueless teen. (24 hours inside is enough to scare most folk straight.) If she'd done something really bad at home, some time in the Foreign Legion would have opened her eyes. ("March or die, mon petit dummy!") :sleepy:
  9. Hard to dream when the draft lottery could end them in a second. As a 1966 high school graduate from a JROTC school, I did wonder if Vietnam would be home if university grades weren't good enough. As it turned out, I worried myself into a Duodenal ulcer, which changed me to 1Y in the draft lottery. I could dream about Photography again, but things turned out a bit different. High school classmates? One is a dentist in a four brothers practice, another traded in his guitar to teach high school band, and another worked for a dairy until his back gave out. I see them once in a while, but it's not planned. The cameras are stored away, and the digital p&s gets little use. I am a dual system computer user, which is a kind of accomplishment, I suppose. (And I used to get sooo ticked at "smug Mac users" when Windows 3.x made life far too interesting.) Now "Hotel California" plays on Ye Olde Pismo's iTunes in Party Shuffle mode.
  10. http://www.emediawire.com/releases/2007/5/emw525197.htm Do you remember break dancing? No? You must be Korean. Yes? Stop yawning, there's national pride at stake! (Is it coincidence that there's a break dancing movie playing in the theaters?) The 80's are back! Here we go again...
  11. Sounds like the cauldron calling the frying pan 'black.' :sleepy:
  12. The horror! 30 minutes of "the pretty Beatle" on HSN might sink the channel into cancellation. (Just kidding, Beatles fans. But it sounds like Sir Paul has fallen so far off the grid that he's holding an "alimony party" sale.)
  13. Well, Don Ho could sing, in a boozy kind of way, had a first class band backing him up, and introduced many first time musicians and singers over the years. Can Jon Lovitz sing? No? Oh well, there's always Rap. ("The middle aged beastie boys")
  14. Will these bands do a "Globally Over Heated" theme complete with candles, torches, a 'Survivor'-like roaring fire and NO live electric lines for that truly organic sound? :sleepy:
  15. Late last year, L.A. band "Buddhist Priest" rolled through town covering Judas Priest tomes.
  16. A "Fountains of Wayne" double, aka the "Out of State Plates" special. (Not quite as interesting as MCC's "Party Doll.")
  17. "Shrek The Third" 7/10. Like a TV series, this story has slipped into low/reverse gear as domesticity threatens the green swamp couple. The "Arthur Pendragon" character sounded quite a bit like Shrek the first, but pulled it off like any good career counselor. I'm not looking forward to "Shrek IV." :sleepy:
  18. The way Ms. Lohan is going, she'll be singing "The Folsom Prison Blues" before too long.
  19. Hook this one up with Scientology Air, er, John Travolta! This way she gets a special seat and an interesting belief system that will keep those pesky psychs at bay. :sleepy:
  20. Sounds like LL definitely has an alcohol problem that wasn't fixed by rehab. Issue that destroyer of expensive automobiles a bus pass pronto!
  21. Unfortunately, nothing and no one is safe from the bottom line. (After all, Janis Joplin's bitingly satirical song, "Mercedes Benz" was used to sell Daimler's rides not too long ago.)
  22. "Serenity" 8/10 I was looking for Don Ho's "rap" over "Hawai'i Aloha," which had been featured on 5/5, when his ashes were scattered off Waikiki beach. I found his "A Night in Hawaii with Don Ho," but the find of the night was "Serenity." A "tie up loose strands and give 'em a mighty yank" would sum up this continuation of the late TV show, "Firefly." Although one could see this movie without knowing anything about the series, it's rip-roaring action, peril, and humor running as fast as you can away from the zombie-like Reavers. For non-Browncoats, get the "Firefly" set, then fly "like a leaf in the wind."
  23. "Mom" by Lena Machado comes to mind. You can find a modern interpretation of it on Raiatea Helm's 2003 "Far Away Heaven" CD release.
  24. Too bad underwater communications tech wasn't up to the task back then. Chasing sharks and dirty jobs on the Discovery channel, novice SCUBA divers can put out enough noise to scare the predators away!
