Something Good- Bic Runga

I just saw Boy A. It's a film about a guy who went to jail as a kid for murder (but did he do it? oooh) and has just been released and is getting on with life under a new name only to have his past keep coming back to him. I'll give it a 6/10 though i'm not happy about it. It got off to a great start, with some fantastic storytelling. I really loved the way the editing is slow allowing for this kind of honest feel to the film and some awesome awkward moments. It had all the potential to be a 10 out of 10 if it wasn't for too much ambiguity and an ending which could have been really strong, but wasn't because I was still left confused over all the ambiguous stuff. I would still recommend it though! ...but maybe that's just coz I was totally crushing on the lead actor the entire time

I'm watching Skins series 2. Again, as a distraction to stop myself from buying series 3. Anyone else seen it? I just love it.

I saw Avatar, and to be honest didn't think it lived up to the hype. Yes it was good, but it wasn't the best movie ever, just solid. I'd give it 7/10 though I probably wouldn't watch it again. I watched a movie called Bella the other day, not sure if anyone else would have seen it, but I'd definitely recommend it. Just a lovely movie, with great pacing about the impact strangers can have on each others lives. 9/10

Thought I'd post some thoughts on this years BDO here instead of starting a whole new topic thing. first things first, it was AWESOME. It had a massive lineup. My favourites of the day were: MUSE- While I'm not overly keen on some of their newer hits, this was still my top act of the day. Their laser light show was AMAZING- the most impressive lighting I have seen at BDO. And they just rocked as they always do, playing some truly epic songs, like New Born along with the newbies. Every time I see them they leave me with that awesome high that you only get from seeing a great live performance. THE DECEMBERISTS- My second fave of the day. These guys are great and the lead singer is really funny in a nerdy and adorable way. They had a middle of the day slot, but managed to pull a decent crowd. It was a fantastic fun show, and at one stage the lead singer managed to request and succeed in getting everyone in the audience to sit on the ground. I hope they come back to NZ sometime soon to have their own show. GIRL TALK: This guy has soooooooo much energy!! It was a really fun show. He got audience members on the stage dancing and all his mashups were spot on. And he was dancing and jumping all over- up and down on his desk and everything the entire show, showing he loves his music as much as the audience did. I also saw Lily Allen, The Mars Volta, Dizzee Rascal, Peaches (who managed to walk on the audience and apparently asked everyone in the audience to take off their shirts and they obliged...but we'd already left for another act at that stage), Midnight Youth, Temper Trap, Passion Pit, The Horrors and Devendra Banhart. It was an awesome day in the sun with awesome friends and awesome music. I definitely suffered awesomeness-withdrawal on having to go back to work the next monday.

Thought I'd share my two cents on Inglorious Basterds... It perhaps wasn't the best told story, it was very bitsy with multiple plot lines and too many characters for the audience to keep up with, causing a few to be forgotten, but I found these fascinating anyway and what struck me was the treatment of history in the film. Of course there's the obvious alternate history thing going on, but there was also this kind of idea that history itself is just a story. At the end of the film no one character knows exactly what happened and this is true of history itself. There are so many multiple versions of history floating around depending on who tells it and the truth is no one knows the whole truth no matter how many times it is written in a history book. Violence in the film was used within this context of history and I think it was justifiable and did not form the sole basis for the film (as opposed to something like the Saw movies which are just about seeing violent acts on screen with a weak story built around them.) Tarantino will use violence gratuitously, but it seems to me that his fascination with violence isn't exactly just for violence sake, but for exploring how people react to violence and violence on film (as someone- sorry can't remember who- said in a previous post, the fact that the climax is in a movie theatre is by no mistake). I think that to some extent, Tarantino is playing with the idea of what makes violence acceptable to people, revenge, war, love etc. I mean, we still live in a world where human beings are employed to kill other human beings for land, power and oil. Tarantino definitely enjoys blood and violence in his films, but I think at the same time he is using this to consider how violent acts have such a hold on humans. I think I might have lost my argument a bit there, but hopefully it makes sense. For me anyway, I like Tarantino for his dialogue, sharp stylised characterisation and his ability to play around with film techniques like black and white, intertitles and tangent like montages etc instead of focussing on the realism of the film. I tend to look away during the more gruesome bits and I would be quite interested to see him make something that lacked violence and had more heart (which he definitely runs low on) though that may not happen for a while. BTW whoever mentioned Pirate Radio should definitely go and see it. Though I'm not 100% sure what you'll be getting. In the rest of the world we got The Boat That Rocked, which I just saw today and loved. The soundtrack is fantastic if you love classic rock (although I have heard people complain that there are no Beatles- unthinkable for a film about a 60s radio station- but I'm assuming that would have been due to budget). It's an interesting take on the history of pirate radio stations with quirky characters and some very witty dialogue in parts. I'd give it 7.5/10. Pirate Radio is the US edit of the same film, it has something like 10-15 mins edited out the name changed. And watch The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus while you're at it. It's a visually stunning film with a quirky story. The plot can be a bit convoluted at times, and I admit that I did lose track at a couple of points so will definitely have to watch again, but the acting is great and did I mention how visually stunning it is? It's the last film Heath Ledger acted in, and they had to get three other actors to complete his role, which may have let the film down but was integrated into the film very well. I'd give it a 8/10. Definitely not something you see every day.

There's quite a few awesome songs in there which will be very useful- especially the ones that I know well so I will actually be able to tell if I'm playing it wrong. I'd always wondered why it was that everyone who picks up a guitar seems to be able to play wonderwall. Anyways thanks a bunch, now all I have to do is actually buy a guitar!

Heya! I'm planning on teaching myself to play guitar over the summer, and apart from being taught in primary school a song called Ten Guitars, a lame kiwi anthem which none of you will know and I have long forgot, I have no experience with guitars and know nothing. So I'm looking for advice on songs which are good for beginners and anything else you feel like telling me, coz as I said I know nothing. Haven't even bought a guitar yet. Funnily enough I saw the word cheese-pop and instantly thought it would perfect for my friend and her cheesy music taste. After listening, however, I changed my mind...
