Carl
Most of the time, Glen Campbell doesn't even know he has Alzheimer's disease, and when asked how he was feeling recently, his reply was "Wonderful." Guided by his wife Kim, Campbell is on his Goodbye Tour, which makes a stop at the Grammy Awards where he will be honored. Presenting Campbell to the public, awkward memory lapses and all, gives us a chance to eulogize him while he is still alive, and also makes us reconsider these degenerative brain disorders. It's a fascinating look at what happens when we can confront the condition out in the open. Here's the Chicago Sun-Times interview with Campbell, where you'll see that in his mind, things are pretty good. At one point, the reporter quotes from our Jimmy Webb interview, where it becomes clear that Campbell is still moved by the adulation of his peers. pinkstones
Alzheimer's has to be one of the cruelest ways to die, short of a painful terminal disease. The idea that you can one day be trapped inside your own body, completely aware of your surroundings but unaware of who you are or who anyone around you is, is frightening beyond belief.
