Merle Haggard’s publicist released a statement Tuesday about the singer’s cancer surgery at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital following The Californian’s report of his condition.

Sources who wished to remain anonymous said the singer underwent surgery Monday to remove a lung tumor discovered in May, at the time believed to be a benign growth. Haggard, who initially refused treatment, was in stable condition and in good spirits, they said.

His publicist, Tresa Redburn, said Haggard is resting and recovering in a “Bakersfield hospital.â€

“It was discovered during a biopsy that he had non-small cell lung cancer, which has a far better cure rate than that of the small (oat) cell cancer,†according to the e-mailed statement. “The doctors believe they have removed it all, but tests are still ongoing. One pathologist that reviewed the biopsy noted that very often surgery cures this form of the disease.â€

Redburn said Haggard and his family request privacy at this time, but “prayers and good thoughts would be very much appreciated.â€
