It was the Summer of 1970. I was with a student group touring Japan and I happened to see "M*A*SH" and "Woodstock" on a movie theater's double bill. There weren't many people in the theater, and "Woodstock" was up first. Seeing Japanese subtitles on the right had side of the screen was about as different as I'd ever seen. Richie Havens opened the festival, and the hypnotic guitar and congas started "Freedom." Here he is some years later, still playing his heart out, covering songs like a circus tent, and making great music.
