  1. The Cure were created in Crawley, Sussex (England), in 1978 as a mix of psychedelic beat and post-punk tradition. Robert Smith (*1959), Laurence Tolhurst (*1959) and bassist Michael Dempsey came together, label owner Chris Perry took them to the studio where the Cure recorded their debut single Killing An Arab (1979). Four weeks later this was followed by their album Three Imaginary Boys. After another few singles and a tour, Dempsey left the group. He was replaced by Simon Gallup (B), keyboard-player Mathieu Hartley also joined them. The quartet had a success in 1980 with their album 17 Seconds (UK number 20). Without Hartley, they published the album Faith (UK number 7) in 1981. They continued on their road to success with a mix of punk and pop in the mid-80s. Porl Thompson replaced Thornhally (in 1983, B). In 1985, Gallup, who had left the band in 1982, rejoined the Cure. They had one success after another up to the early 1990s.

Psychedelic beat and post-punk pop...methinks....not Goth

  2. I've never really understood how the Cure ended up being a goth band... a crackingly good rock/pop band with some moody bits on the albums (and the first couple of singles) but I just can't see the Goth bit...a great essay would conclusively demonstrate how Friday I'm in Love, Love Cats and Hot Hot Hot are archetypal Goth tunes...that I'd like to read :D They are to Goth what Costello, Squeeze and the Police were to Punk....JMHO ::

  3. The synth/moog type solo on Virginia Plain (Roxy Music) always gets me playing air keyboards ...nnnnnyaaa eee aaaay......neeeeye ooooh. :o

By the way, trivia buffs. The violin solo on Baba O'Reilly was played by a guy called Dave Arbus. Apparently it was a last minute studio decision to try a violin outro and one of the Who's roadies (one Chalky Chalkley) had just come off a tour with a band called East of Eden who had a violinist and who he knew lived just around the corner...he nipped round in Moonies Roller and got him out of bed...he did it in one take....well, that's the story Chalky told me and, on researching it a bit, the story stacks up....how sad am I :o

  4. I was a founder member of the Monkees Fan Club (UK) and thought everything they did was fab....around the same time I got 'Wild Thing' by the Troggs (who were also fab)...yup, a great era...they were my first singles...saving up my pocket money and blowing it all on music....wonderful.

    :D :D

  5. Well, my son says 'All Along The Watchtower' Hendrix version....I would say Joni Mitchell's 'Woodstock....much bigger hit for Matthew's Southern Comfort. Just for trivia buffs...Joni M's This Flight Tonight was only a hit in the UK for Nazareth (heavy version would you believe).

I'm sure there are lots of others. :guitar:

  6. I can't remember his name....but somebody will, the guitarist certainly deserves his spot in the limeight....awesome (and to my ears) improvised rock guitar solos....it's the only thing that makes some of their songs listenable....calling occupants....total shite, until the guitar solo....ditto Goodbye to Love....JMHO :guitar: :guitar: :guitar:

  7. On a 'phone in' on the local radio the DJ was asking people to tell us names of real people that nearly sounded like famous bands or musicians. There were loads....one person's next door neighbour was called 'Martina Turner' etc.....my absolute favourite was a guy called Geoff Leopard (so he said) :D.... anybody know any others? ;)

  8. PS..... I thought Midge Ure was notorious for beating his wife....beautiful lady, but lots of black eyes....just what I'd heard.

PPS Saw him deputising for Brian Robertson, Thin Lizzy....and he did a damn fine job....mind you, that was before I heard that he was hitting on his girl :(

  9. Sorry Foxy...no reflection on you, but it (the St.Etienne version) represents a sad decline in music (IMHO) where 'classic' songs are given a soulless electrobeat backing with someone warbling over it without any integrity....mind you, at least they didn't R&B it up and give every other word a 4 octave vibrato warble ...'only luuu...uuu...uuuu...aaaa....oooo..aaa...ooove can brea....eeeeaaaa....aaaahhh...ahaak your heaaaaaaa....aaaaa....rrrr..aaaa....tttt....etc'.

Caught me on a bad day really.....still think you are brill... :coolio:

  10. Which artists come on as big jerks/fearsome characters, but are really nice once you get to know them...and who come over as really nice, but are actually jerks/assholes in real life?

Starters...Keith Richards...tries to look hard and fearsome, actually very warm, funny and sensible man.

    Elton John...seems like a nice guy...actually a complete wazzock!

Just for starters, mind you.... ::

  11. Or Australian...I thought they were from Manchester...spent a bit of time in Oz, I know, but a UK band really. Consummate songwriters of great talent...but never really surpassed their 60's stuff to my ears....I've just gotta get a message to you oooooh oooh oooohohoo...greatstuff
