  1. He always struck me as being a bit of a twat...as we would say in the UK. OK, he was not too bad on the guitar and he did seem to have some 'sound' references as far as musical tastes were concerned, but he really didn't create anything 'new' and was an egocentric 'arsehole' (anothe UK phrase) when it came to band politics....he thought he was Gods gift to music and women...the drugs and alcohol took their toll (fairly swiftly) and the smarter and more savvy intellects (Jagger and Richards) took over.

    He was definitely a catalyst...but nothing more. He was 'right place, right time' but not a great genius....'catalyst' is absolutely the right word.

    IMHO :coolio:

  2. Well worth checking out. Making Plans for Nigel is a 'classic' but my favourite single of theirs was Senses Working Overtime.

    A greatest hits compilation, if such a thing exists, would be enjoyed by most folk with taste.

  3. I think they are 'difficult' in the sense that you either 'get' their music or you need to work at it (Gentle Giant that is). As for Soft Machine....I loved Bundles the first time I heard it and I still do now...but many folk would find it challenging too...superb drumming and million notes per second guitar (in places)...I am not a huge fan of 'progressive' rock...more a jazz fusionist. Rock purists would hate it.

    JMHO

  4. Check this guy out...saw him live last night...superb. Swedish singer/songwriter in the mode of Nick Drake...awesome guitar chops, nice voice (with an American accent from his time in the States), good songs, great website.

    If you've got broadband try this link for a live snippet from Swedish TV.

  5. Well....I think 'Apostrophe' is genius throughout. Hot Rats...pretty damned good...Jazz from Hell...pretty challenging....and seeing him live was awesome, probably the best musicians in the world all in one band (Steve Vai on rhythm guitar ::)...all in all...yup, a genius.

    IMHO ::

  6. Him and his dad also hand coiled the pickups using miles of telephone wire...the lengths some people will go to... :coolio:

    Does anyone remember Bill Nelson?....check out 'Crying to the Sky' from Be Bop Deluxe's third album for the most awesome , apocalyptic tone you will ever hear. :guitar:

  7. Quote:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Mr. Brian May of Queen got unmistakeable sounds from his guitar. You may recall each Queen album had the statement, "No synthesizers used to record this album" on the back.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    He actually built his guitar at the age of 16 abd is still using it

    He also uses an old sixpenny coin as a pick...which may contribute to the tone.

    Anybody remember Bill Nelson ? (Be Bop Deluxe) ...absolutely awesome tone...never bettered in my humble opinion.
