  1. The Black Crowes '90 version of Otis Redding's Hard to Handle really rocks but is very sleek and smooth compared to the earthy, grittier, rougher edged original. I like both versions.

This one isn't classic rock - Little Willie John '56 original blues version of Fever was clearly overshadowed by Peggy Lee's '58 version. She even added more verses.

Here's a couple of acoustic guitarists...

Leo Kottke - live '73... anybody know the guitar tunings on this album? Thanks

Norman Blake - He keeps talking on this album about how sweet sounding his 1934 Martin guitar is... Fingerpickin' music is a close cousin to Bluegrass.

Al DiMeola's 1st solo album (Elegant Gypsy) back in '76 featured an acoustic duet of a little flamenco diddy with guitarist Paco de Lucia called

    'Mediterranean Sundance'

They put Al on the left speaker and Paco on the right speaker, and they had dueling guitars flamenco style...for 5 minutes.

  4. My favorite classical piece is

Dvorak, the Symphony No.9 ("From the New World" 1893)

I remember my parents getting me the conductor's score (sheet music for the orchestra) and a baton so I could be the guest conductor from my living room.

Also maybe check out the compilation bins(after xyz in the classical section) at the local cd store. Like best of Bach, or Mozart. Or the cd section at Costco. I've seen stuff like 'Breakfast with Bach'.

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is a highly regarded group.

  5. The same for me, he surrounded himself with top-notch arrangers with the likes of Nelson Riddle, Billy May and Gordon Jenkins for consistently high quality album releases. IMO, there were less high quality albums at Reprise even though he set the bar very high for any vocalist during any period. I guess it's like trying to compare apples and oranges.

  6. Leon Russell is a prolific songwriter. He also wrote Delta Lady, made famous by Joe Cocker. George Benson covered This Masquerade and won a Grammy for Record of the Year in '76. Other songs are: Song for You / Hummingbird / Shoot out on the Plantation / Roll Away the Stone / Stranger in a Strange Land / Bluebird / Back to the Island.
