  1. Three Oldies which I heard/ saw a contestant in the final of a TV Talent Quest do VERY effectively as a medley. He was runner up to a flautist! "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" (Johnny Ray 1959, Tom Jones 1967, Bobbie Gentry 1969). Tom Jones' song was titled "(It Looks Like) I'll Never Fall In Love Again". That same Talent Show started an Australian trio, New World, on the road to fame in the U.K. and Australia. Their prize was a trip to the U.K. Any English people who were around in the early 70s remember them? John Lee (the fuzzy haired one) was a mate of mine.
  2. Five altogether. On The Border #42, Song On The Radio #29 + the two top 10s* already mentioned, all produced by Alan Parsons in the late 70s, and Midnight Rocks #24 1980. I'm just quoting from one of my books. The only two we really knew in Australia were Year Of The Cat* and Time Passages*.
  3. One of THE defining events of Music. "Before there was Elvis there was nothing".
  4. RE 2nd December: I just realised from looking at another thread that nobody mentioned RAY MANZAREK (Doors Keyboardist Extraordinaire) was born this day in 1935.
  5. Hi Ed, What a Toughie! I couldn't think of any at all. Two that come to mind that mention Thursday are "Lady Madonna"/ Beatles - her stockings needed mending - and "Diary Of Horace Wimp"/ ELO - he asked her for a date.
  6. 2 December: 60 years ago today The Ink Spots and Ella Fitzgerald top the U.S. Charts with "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall". Must be a message in that somewhere.
  7. I worked in a Bank in Australia, and Canadian people used to get a bit upset when we mistook them for Americans! I think it's a bit like the friendly rivalry between Australia and New Zealand. Enzedders would pronounce it Errasmuth. (We say zed not zee. Ask the Wiggles).
  8. THE COASTERS (Yakety Yak,Charlie Brown,Searchin'). Originally from L.A. and known as the Robins (Smokey Joe's Cafe). When Lieber and Stoller (who wrote most of their songs) moved to Atlantic Records in N.Y. most of the group went with them and changed their name to show their roots "on the Coast". EPMD (rappers - sorry, I know it's supposed to be a MUSIC site) Eric Sermon and Parrish Smith chose this acronym for "Eric and Parrish Making Dollars". (Thanks Bazooka. I posted these and L7 onto the site you gave us - of course they mightn't use them !)
  9. I didn't get the lyrics quite right. As they're very deep I'd like to share them with you ! Uno, dos, one, two, tres, quatro Matty told Hatty about a thing she saw. Had two big horns and a wooly jaw. Wooly bully, wooly bully. Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully. Hatty told Matty, "Let's don't take no chance. Let's not be L-seven, come and learn to dance." Wooly bully, wooly bully Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully. Matty told Hatty, "That's the thing to do. Get you someone really to pull the wool with you." Wooly bully, wooly bully. Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully. Baby you're so square...Baby I don't care. Thankyouverymuch.
  10. L7 .Put the two together and they (sort of) form a square. In Sam The Sham & The Pharoahs' "Woolly Bully" one line goes "Let's don't be L7, Come and join the dance".
  11. Too Good Annabelle ! Thanks for that.
  12. DECEMBER 1: Summer officially commences Down Under today. 1960 Elvis holds #1 in US and Australia with "Are You Lonesome Tonight"; also in UK with "It's Now Or Never" which becomes the fastest Million selling single there. It sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Not bad for a reworking of an 1899 Italian song "O Sole Mio"!
  13. I just can't really work out what's a Rock song and what's a Pop song. :doh:I still think "Rock Around The Clock" is the best Rock and Roll song of all time, but I also think "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers is the greatest Pop/Rock/Soul/Ballad () of the 20th Century.
  14. [ I know Giddy up Ding dong (oh, giddy up, giddy up ding dong, giddy up, giddy up ding dong...) I know the Treniers, but I don't know that song! Hmm let me test you... Do you know: Get out (Leave)- JoJo or This Love- Maroon 5 Look whos looking names up on google now! Just kidding ~Lizzie
  15. Which U.K. band started their career as the Spectres, then Traffic Jam before they hit the big time ? Does anyone know the origin of their current name? (I don't).
  16. Quote from Bazooka: Here's a site with a ton of band name origins (<) Good site, but it's quite incorrect about UB40 though! I thought it was common knowledge that they took their name from the English Unemployment Benits applcation form code UB40, which was an "in" joke before they became famous. Sorry! Someone does mention that further into the site.
  17. I think you guys are underestimating me! I know that song! I know more than you guys think! Lizzie: How about "Giddy Up Ding Dong" Freddy Bell and The Bell Boys? and "One Of These Days (I'm gonna jump out from behind the bushes and grab ya) The Treniers? Although they probably rate with the worst Rock'N'Roll songs. PS I rated this thread a 5.
  18. Well, being a Newbie, I'd be interested to know what was the consensus of opinion previously?
  19. Let It Be... Paul "I Am the Walrus" was made up of three distinctly different songs. Good stuff Cosmos. Really interesting.
