  1. It's coming up to Christmas...i work in retail and can work whatever hours they could possibly dream of right up til March...so naturally my work has cut down my hours to 11 per week

Now i'm looking for a new job...but everyone is telling me that they just hired people...coz of course with school holidays and coming up to christmas everyone is looking for work...and were on to it way before me

And...instead of being able to go physically walking around seeking a job...i have to sit at home...waiting for a package...which was delivered to the wrong address...where some a-hole signed for it and which we will probably never see seeming as whoever signs for a package which isn't their's or even supposed to go to their address probably isn't the type of nice honest person to say "woops sorry...here you go mr. courier man...have it back"

...and it was a birthday present for my mum from my sister in japan

...so it's all sunshine and rainbows with me today

  2. We saw "nah," but it might be pronounced differently than NZ. The way we say it it sounds more like "naw," and/or "na" with the "a" sounding the "a" in apple.

By the way, good to see you again, Lonelyday! :)

haha na with an apple sound! accents are great! We just say naahhhh with the a sound like in bar. We also rarely pronounce our rs...so bar is really baa...car is caa far is faa

  3. Where do you live? In the country, city or somewhere in between. Is the terrain rolling green hills, mountains or on the sea shore. Do you like where you live or do you wish you could move somewhere else? Not out of the country just out of the neighborhood.

A kind of "When you look out your window what do you", see question.

I live in Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand, it has about a million people, while the entire country houses just over 4million. I live in an outer suburb which is about a 50minute trainride South from the city center(i have to catch this train every day during the semester for uni).

South Auckland is generally put under a bad light by the media as it is a low socio-economic area with the highest rate of crime in NZ so it's probably not what everyone immediately thinks of when they picture NZ. Despite that i've lived here my entire life and while I don't wanna live here forever i'm glad i grew up here.

Theres a real diversity of people...Maori, Cook Island, Samoan, NZ Europeans, Indians, Chileans, Greeks...you could probably list at least 1 person of every nationality imaginable living in my town, which i think is pretty cool.

If i were to stand on my roof right now i would be able to see houses, shops, industrial areas, roads and and a school but also trees, paddocks, parks, bush(or forest i guess) and a mountain in the distance...and its a short drive to the beach depending on where you'd wanna go.

Where i'd really love to live is Great Barrier Island...an island off the mainland with a population under 1000. We holiday there...it's mountainous with dense bush, native wildlife, natural hotpools, tumultuous roads, hippy-like locals and a beach wherever you look :)

  4. Aaarghh i keep typing comments and forgetting to post them

Soooo anyways...i haven't been on sf lately but i am trying to listen to everything people have suggested.

So what i've listened to so far:

Scribe- i don't really like him that much even though i'm from NZ, live he aint great and his newest stuff isn't very exciting...still not many and some of his older stuff can still be fun.

The Roots- I definitely like and will be listening to more :)

De La Soul and Outkast are pretty cool

Timbaland- I like him, he is pretty big right now...in nz and i'm guessing everywhere else as well. I hear him a lot in clubs.

Aesop Rock- I liked this guy, great lyrics definitely and not the usual rap i hear around.

MF Doom- Not sure about him but i did kinda like America's Most Blunted so will try and listen to more.

Del Tha Funkee Homosapian- he's great, was already familiar with some Gorillaz stuff but hadn't heard the Deltron 3030 songs before.

A Tribe Called Quest- definitely cool, and a great example for people who have the view that rap is all about 'pimps and hoes'

...and in reply to Batman...my fave modern band at the moment is Muse although i do listen to quite a bit of 'classic rock' as well, i'm generally open minded about music so no worries.

  5. I saw these guys on Saturday night where they were supporting Muse. I didn't really know anything of them beforehand, just recognised the name...and now...i think they're pretty awesome.

They're a kiwi band that was formed in 2002 and play blues-driven high energy rock. In 2006 they moved over to England to work on their debut LP Hunting Whales with Full Time Hobbie Records. They've played support slots for R.E.M., The Hives, Oasis, Jet and now Muse.

Having seen them perform live i'd have to agree that they're fantastic...especially with their singer Ed Knowles who has this insane energy on stage and is just a natural performer.

    The band consists of:

    Edward Knowles -Vocals

    Callum Martin- Guitar

    Sven Pettersen- Guitar)

    Karrel Chabera Jr.- Bass Guitar

    Jacob Moore- Drums

    You can check them here:

    Or on their myspace:

  6. New acts have been announced...lotsa kiwi ones as well as groups from all over...

Spoon, Brand New, Anti-Flag, Carl Cox, Kate Nash, Shy Child, Enter Shikari, Operator Please, Unkle (live), Krafty Kuts & MC Dynamite, Die! Die! Die!, The Nightwatchman (Tom Morello acoustic), Dr Octagon with Kutmaster Kurt, Aceyalone, Op Shop, Pluto, Scribe, Liam Finn, Tiki Tanne, Havoc, Collapsing Cities, Bleeders, Supergroove, The Checks and Dam Native

  7. Saw them live last night...they fully deserve best live act because they are freaking awesome...just absolutely amazing live. WOW.

    Such a great night!

  8. Heya Spacifix is a young band from NZ, they came into the spotlight a couple of years ago after winning the Smoke Free Pacifica Beats Rock Quest(a national competition).

I wouldn't know how to categorise them, but their myspace calls them an R&B/Reggae/Funk band so that gives you some clue as to what to expect.

They are just really lively and are great to watch live and their music is usually described as 'fresh' which is pretty much spot on...so yeah...

Let me know what ya think

  9. Heya, this was brought on by another thread(you can probably guess which one) where rap music kept being argued. Now I don't wanna start some mile long argument about this again but rather ask the question:

What are some good rap and hiphop songs and artists?

It's not that i don't think that rap and hiphop can be good, because i know that they can be, but that my own knowledge of these genres(which i've put together because they tend to have a lot of crossover) really only extends to what is mainstream and what is local.

So hopefully some of you can help me with this :) and who knows, maybe some people who have been more guarded about these types of music in the past will have a listen and find something they like as well :)

  10. The first announcement has been made for the Big Day Out(a 1day music fest in NZ and Aus).

    So far the lineup includes:

    Rage Against the Machine

    Bjork

    Arcade Fire

    Shihad

    LCD Sound System

    Dizzee Rascal

Billy Bragg, The Clean, Katchafire, The Phoenix Foundation, SJD, Grinspoon, Cut Off Your Hands, Hilltop Hoods, Paul Kelly, Battles, Young Sid, Antagonist, Motocade, White Birds and Lemons

Quite a few of those are local aussie and kiwi acts but i'm really excited that Rage are headlining.

    Whatya think? :D

  11. I don't know if I have any guilty pleasures exactly...i listen to some stuff people would call a guilty pleasure but mostly I listen to it for the nostalgia...or because it's so bad/lame/cheesy that it's good.

Highlights of this include Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, the High School Musical Soundtrack, Bon Jovi and Aqua.

  12. I'm finding it hard to draw a distinction between what is art and what is entertainment. For me I listen to music for enjoyment and what music I enjoy kind of depends on where I am, what I'm doing, how I'm feeling etc.

I'm kind of guessing that by entertainment you mean commercial music the kind of stuff that's catchy, fun, easy to listen to perhaps but not the most thought provoking stuff...but what are some examples of music or bands who create music that you would consider purely art?

  13. I'm thinking perhaps they're accurately rated. I mean, for each fan who seems to think they were the best grunge band out there and that they paved the way for other bands there seems to be another person who can rattle off the names of other bands they believe are better than Nirvana so to prove that they are overrated.

So through this if there are that many people who agree that they are overrated you can't accurately come to the conclusion that they ARE in fact overrated as through argument how high they rate seems to come at a balance between the two sides.

Does that make sense? I'm kinda confusing myself :stars:

...also Slowhand I think it's funny that you keep referring to yourself and other songfactors as musical snobs.
