In a capitalist society kiddies - we get what we pay for and what we demand - no demand = no supply - so when we stop buying the crap that Clear Channel and RIAA$#%$! want us to - start searching the net for new artists that haven't sold out and supporting them by buying tickets and spreading the word about them - it would put the soul killers out of business and artists would be happy to make a living instead of a killing. Stop buying cd's at walmart -go to your local indie stores instead, buy cd's from local talent- go to the places they play and spend your money there. If there's a major label release that you can't live without then buy it used or from one of the indie stores. Really - advertisers won't pay for crap unless they think it's what we want to hear.
Oh and Clear Channel really sucks - get Serius. :happybanana: :guitar:

Loudon Wainwright III never matched the hit he had with "Dead Skunk..." but he had many other wonderful songs. You may also recall that he had a recurring role for a year or two on the TV series, "MASH" as a kind of troubador who sang little ditties related to the show's plots in cut-ins.
He's a very clever fellow from whom I wish we'd heard more.
I'm not sure if he wrote it - but he sang the theme song of the show- "Suicide is Painless".

An absolutely awesome song. Finally someone who's heard of Morphine!
I love morphine - the band not the drug, and heroin - the song by velvet underground- not the drug.
other drug songs I love - just about anything by Lou Reed, the Twilight Zone _ by Golden Earring;
Snow Blind Friend - already mentioned by someone as a Manfred Mann song but I remember the Steppenwolf version- and the song was written by Hoyt Axton - an awesome song!
and my new favorite
The Nurse Who Loves Me _ By A Perfect Circle
Say hello to the rug's topography
It holds quite a lot of interest with your face down on it
Say hello to the shrinking in your head
You can't see it but you know its there so don't neglect it
I'm taking her home with me all dressed in white
She's got everything I need pharmacy keys
She's falling hard for me I can see it in her eyes
She acts just like a nurse with all the other guys
Say hello to all the apples on the ground
They were once in your eyes but you sneezed them out while sleeping
Say hello to everything you've left behind
It's even more a part of your life now that you can't touch it
I'm taking her home with me all dressed in white
She's got everything I need some pills in a little cup
She's falling hard for me I can see it in her eyes
She acts just like a nurse with all the other guys
Say hello to the rugs topography...

What's your name?

Who's your daddy?
(Who's your daddy? He rich?)
Is he rich like me?
and The Box Tops - The Letter
That's when I first started listening to the radio at night - when I was supposed to be getting to sleep so I could get up for school
Then one night I heard the Velvet Underground - Rock and Roll - and I thought they wrote it about me.
Ahh - to be young and rock!
Oh - and big tuna - I share your love for Bill Whithers - Ain't no Sunshine - that seems like it was from around the same time. But it's hard to remember things clearly from that long ago.
-
Bad Company after Paul Rodgers left to pursue his solo career - he did ok for a while and I think they even made an attempt at a reunion/comeback a short while ago - but they lost something and it never comes back once it goes does it?
-
You're right Batman - The Streets are really hysterical - I posted them on the get the word out forum several months ago - and the videos I've seen from them are great. Here's a John Prine song that always makes me laugh - it's one of our sing along in the car songs-
Dear Abby
From: Great Days: The John Prine Anthology
Dear Abby, Dear Abby ...
My feet are too long
My hair's falling out and my rights are all wrong
My friends they all tell me that I've no friends at all
Won't you write me a letter, Won't you give me a call
Signed Bewildered
Bewildered, Bewildered...
Chorus:
You have no complaint
You are what your are and you ain't what you ain't
So listen up Buster, and listen up good
Stop wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood
Dear Abby, Dear Abby...
My fountain pen leaks
My wife hollers at me and my kids are all freaks
Every side I get up on is the wrong side of bed
If it weren't so expensive I'd wish I were dead
Signed Unhappy
Unhappy, Unhappy...
Repeat Chorus
Dear Abby, Dear Abby...
You won't believe this
But my stomach makes noises whenever I kiss
My girlfriend tells me It's all in my head
But my stomach tells me to write you instead
Signed Noise-maker
Noise-maker, Noise-maker
Repeat Chorus
Dear Abby, Dear Abby...
Well I never thought
That me and my girlfriend would ever get caught
We were sitting in the back seat just shooting the breeze
With her hair up in curlers and her pants to her knees
Signed Just Married
Just Married, Just Married...
Repeat Chorus
Album Lyrics: Great Days: The John Prine Anthology [1993]

The band I'm recommending is not exactly new but they really do deserve more exposure than they have gotten - they're brilliant! To hear and download for free - a live performance go to My Morning Jacket at Bonnaroo
If you like Neil Young and Crazy Horse you'll love'em.

It seems there are many more Iron Maiden fans here than I thought - here's a link to a contest to win a signed dance of death poster - ya have to write an essay of all things -
They were also supposed to release a DVD box set and announce a 2005 tour. Yeah baby!

There was an early nineties collaboration of Seattle bands called Temple of the Dog (?) which seems like it was some of the members of mudhoney and pearl jam. I thought it was really good. But it's hard to remember that far back.

Back in the 70's I thought that Bad Company and Led zeppelin should get together and make some killer music... then Paul Rogers and Jimmy Page formed the Firm. Lately there have been two supergroups I've been obsessed with ...first (my screen name should give this away) is Audioslave (Soundgarden and Rage against the Machine) and Velvet Revolver (STP and GNR). My thread then is what would your fantasy supergroup be? Some of my thoughts on the subject: (They can be from any time or space)
Robert Smith and Metallica
Smashing Pumpkins with Pink Floyd
Queen and Red Hot Chili Peppers
Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young and Cobain
You get the idea.
-
Thanks. But I must say that the "-unforgiven"-part is far more ROCK than the "-uninvited"-part. It´s Metallica vs. Alanis, you know...
Maybe - but Alanis is angrier than Lars and she rocks too!

Well..........I can't believe I got beat to the K's
here's my L
Lords of Acid :guitar:

Killswitch Engage

Alice in chains were great - but it's pretty hard to say which of all those incredible bands were best...I agree with Musictyme that Neil Young is definitely the founder of the style that came to be called grunge, and Soundgarden, STP, and especially Nirvana along with AIC will always be in my cd changer - Love them all -it's like trying to choose between Zeppelin and Floyd - impossible.
Sidebar - to superunivited - I considered superunforgiven for my screen name - You rock!
-
I got my free cd a few days ago and it's great! I love bands that actually want someone to hear their work- they probably make money the old fashioned way - by actually playing their music...everyone should check these guys out.

How about this one? Sheryl Crowe "My favorite Mistake"
I woke up and called this morning
The tone of your voice was a warning
That you don't care for me anymore
I made up the bed we sleep in
I looked at the clock when you creep in
6 AM and I'm alone
Did you know when you go it's the perfect ending
To the bad day, i was just beginning
When you go all i know is
You're my favorite mistake
Now your friends are sorry for me
They watch you pretend to adore me
But I'm no fool to this game
Now here comes your secret lover
She'll be unlike any other
Until your guilt goes up in flames
Did you know when you go it's the perfect ending
To the bad day i've gotten used to spending
When you go all I know is
You're my favorite mistake
you're my favorite mistake
Maybe nothing lasts forever
Even when you stay together
I don't need forever after
It's your laughter
Won't let me go so I'm holding on this way
Well did you know
Could you tell
You were the only one
That I ever loved
When everything's so wrong
Did you see me walking by
Did it ever make you cry
You're my favorite mistake
You're my favorite mistake
You're my favorite mistake
There is also a Suzanne Vega song called my favorite plum?

Hey there...try this on for style..You get what you give by the New Radicals :guitar:
example:
When the night is falling
and you cant find the light...light
when your dreams are dying...HOLD tight
You got the music in you...dont let go.....bla bla
this world is gonna pull through
Hey Meg - Believe it or not - this is the exact song that came to my mind when I read this question. I also would suggest : AC/DC - For those about to rock we salute you!
and I Just Want to FLy by Sugar Ray. I also think the Queen song - We are the Champions is a perfect suggestion.
