  1. I have been on a steep learning curve the past two years, discovering classic rock and realising that they don't make music like they used to.

    Since I was born in 1984 I missed out on the majority of timeless rock. I was wondering if anyone could suggest names of artists/bands I should without a doubt check out!! I am already a big fan of bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, etc but I would really like to broaden my horizons!!

  2. oohh, muziktyme, I love 'The Lord's Prayer' by Sister Janet. She does a great rendition.

    I could suggest 'My Sweet Lord' by George Harrison, or would that be too obvious?

    I went to a catholic high school and I remember that they played 'Bittersweet Symphony' in mass once. But we never got to do anything cool like you psychocatholic!

    I also would think about:

    Turn! Turn! Turn! (There Is A Season) by The Byrds

    Keep The Faith by Bon Jovi

    Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd

  4. Okay, we will start with the basics:

    To fully appreciate the new, you have to understand the old.

    Cold Chisel was huge over here (still is). They had a massive hit with 'Khe Sahn' and if you don't know all the words to it, you aren't an Aussie. Their albums "East" and the greatest hits "Chisel" are really worth a listen.

    Other excellent Aussie offerings are "The Real Thing" or "10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1" from Midnight Oil, "The Boys Light Up" from Australian Crawl and "Living In The 70's" by Skyhooks.

    But I strongly suggest you start with Cold Chisel. They really, really rock.

  5. I take offence at Queen being labelled a 'gay' band because they weren't.

    It was Freddie's idea to name the band 'Queen'. Brian, Roger and John all agreed to it because the name itself spelt rebellion and presented a challenge to society. Rock music is all about pushing the boundaries and that is what these four men did. The fact that their lead singer became gay half way into their careers (and the word queen could have taken on a different connotation) had nothing to do with it. They were named Queen a long time before then.

    Thanks for your post - I agree with you about the radio airplay of Aussie music. It beats overseas stuff. Killing Heidi are mad, so are Something For Kate. I saw Grinspoon open for Kiss last monday night and they rocked. Machine Gun Fellatio was okay too.

    Then there's Jebediah, The Living End, The Jack, Sunk Loto, The Screaming Jets (my fave) and heaps more.

    Redgum, I haven't heard any of their stuff for years. I'll have to check it out again. Boom Crash Opera - yeah!! Do Split Enz count as Aussie??

  7. Being an Aussie, I am very proud of the music that comes out of my little (population wise - around 19 million) country.

    AC/DC have done us proud, but what about all that other classic Aussie stuff?? Does anyone outthere like Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Australian Crawl, The Choir Boys, Hoodoo Gurus, Skyhooks, etc etc?? Tell me your faves and add the ones I forgot.

  8. Freddie Mercury is one of my idols. A fantastically talented man, Freddie was also flamboyant and careless. He lived life in the fast lane, and his antics eventually caught up with him.

    Freddie always threw caution to the wind, in every aspect of his life. It was his lifestyle that caused him to contract HIV then later AIDS.

    Freddie lived his life to the full, and had no regrets. He chose to keep his illness from his fans as he did not want to taint their image of him. Many people have been made aware and lives possibly saved in the name of Freddie Mercury courtesy of a massive concert given in his honour to promote awareness of the illness.

    Freddie Mercury is one of those true free spirits whose time on earth is always short. But no matter the length of his stay in this world, his legacy will always live on.

  9. I wish I coulda seen Peter Criss and Ace Frehley with Kiss too!! My fave movie, "Detroit Rock City" about four teenagers and their quest to see Kiss is set in 1978 and features Ace and Peter in the concert at the end. The original is always the best, no doubts about that, but Gene and Paul have still got it!!! Gene is actually the same age as my dad!!!!!

    My ears were ringing after the concert!! We all were sorta part-deaf, but it didn't matter one tiny tiny bit. We had such a mad time, words can not describe the thrill of going to a Kiss concert. It's more of a sepctacle than a concert. They go to so much trouble to make their shows memorable for their audiences. I heard whisperings about Kiss being back in Australia in December for "KISSMAS". If true I will be sure to catch them again!! Rock On!!!
