1. One - U2
I think I can safely say we have 1,2,3,4,8,9 and 10 right (or at least we are on the right track), which pretty much gives away the theme if you look at the answers. It doesn't help me out with the rest though.

I can't really comment, but I'll still say Meddle, simply because of Echoes.

Wow, you must really like that white stripes album, to list it at 41 AND 51.
And you've got Led Zep IV at 21 AND 73. Now, that one, I'd agree with ya, it belongs on there twice.
Well spotted. Definitely agree with your last comment, even though I have only heard the first five songs on the untitled album (technically it's untitled).I also found it funny when Australian music channel musicMAX managed to put Appetite For Destruction (Guns N' Roses) twice in their greatest albums of all time countdown.
-
I wish I have actually heard 100 albums - I tend to buy Greatest Hits. I guess Rubber Soul by The Beatles would be my favourite so far.
-
At least my songs got a couple of votes from other people. I knew they wouldn't make the top ten. High Hopes is one of my favourite songs, but it seems no one else agrees.
We've finally got three 80s songs into the same top ten. I should have known Personal Jesus would have been popular. I'll have to keep on trying until one of my own 80s nominations gets there.
-
These are some bands/artists whose final two or three albums I think were excellent, and could have gone on to produce more excellent albums if they hadn't split/died:
- The Beatles (obviously)
- Pink Floyd
- Jimi Hendrix
- Cream (but I guess Clapton's later work compensated for that)
- As much as I would like to say Led Zeppelin, I don't think I will
- Can't think of any others yet
-
I agree, this was a hard selection. Though I still put my nominations at 1 and 2 :
1. High Hopes - Pink Floyd
2. My Happiness - Powderfinger
3. Imagine - John Lennon
4. Money For Nothing - Dire Straits
5. Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
6. Down Under - Men At Work
7. All My Loving - The Beatles
8. Love Reign O'er Me - The Who
9. Lust For Life - Iggy Pop
10. What I Like About You - The Romantics
I have a feeling this one is going to be close - I can see Imagine and All My Loving should be near the top, but otherwise I'm not sure.
-
Allow me to post probably the most generic and boring list so far:
1. Hey Jude
2. A Day In The Life
3. In My Life
4. Yesterday
5. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
6. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
7. Something
8. Let It Be
9. Back In The USSR
10. The Long And Winding Road
I tried to put at least one song that was not in the 1962-1966 or 1967-1970 compilations, but I just couldn't.
-
They are certainly not the only band with one or more deceased members either. Both Elvis and The Beatles appear too.
-
Hmm... A lot of popular songs have been nominated here. I think I'll stick to the more commonly disliked ones:
Yellow Submarine
Within You Without You
Her Majesty
Octopus's Garden
-
I'll stick with post-70s songs again:
My Happiness - Powderfinger
High Hopes - Pink Floyd
If I know any great songs by not massively popular artists (like Classical Gas), chances are I heard them first on The Simpsons (like Classical Gas). I also saw legendary Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel perform Classical Gas and many other orchestral/guitar tunes at a concert with the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra. Needless to say, it was great.
I just noticed that the nominations for number 11 were also done on this thread. Do you think we should create the thread for The Songfactors' Choice Top Ten # 12 now or after nominations?
Ah, right, I got beaten to the above comment.
-
Sorry c s. I did close it off earlier than usual probably, because everyone voted so quickly, and I hadn't seen you around the boards for a couple of days ! How about giving us your Top ten for interest's sake anyway, please ?
OK, here it is:
1. Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House
2. Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2
3. Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds
4. West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys
5. Superstition - Stevie Wonder
6. Classical Gas - Mason Williams
7. Another One Bites The Dust - Queen
8. And I Love Her - The Beatles
9. D'yer Mak'er - Led Zeppelin
10. She Loves You - The Beatles
-
Yeah, don't worry if I haven't voted or nominated. I'm too busy and unreliable.
-
4. "Shattered" - The Rolling Stones
6. "Instant Karma" - John Lennon
-
Wow, I had more good albums to choose from than I thought.
1987 - My favourites:
U2 - The Joshua Tree
Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction
INXS - Kick
Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse Of Reason
I think I'll just have to scratch AFD and put The Joshua Tree in as my new favourite. But only just. The other two, while I haven't heard very much of either, I do really like the singles.
-
you can check the albums released on your birth year on wikipedia
I couldn't find this page on Wikipedia. What is it called?
-
Yeah, I'll try 80s songs too.
"Don't You Forget About Me" - Simple Minds
"Don't Dream It's Over" - Crowded House
-
1987 - Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction
(If anyone can confirm that this album was indeed released in 1987, that would help).
-
Yeah, a few popular songs have got very few votes, like Achy Breaky Heart and Simply The Best. It shows that popular does not mean good.
-
I feel I have to list a few in order:
1. Led Zeppelin
2. The Rolling Stones
3. The Beatles
4. Pink Floyd
5. The Who
All British, as I expected.
Best current band (judging on releases in the past 10 years): Powderfinger (Australian).
-
My Humps(Black Eyed Peas)
The more I hear that song, the more I think it is probably the worst and most painful to listen to song of all time. Their most recent single, Pump It, is almost as bad. There have been loads of truly painful songs released in the last few years, including:
TV Rock - Flaunt It
50 Cent - Err, pretty much every song he's ever released
Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl
Snoop Dogg and Pharrell - Drop It Like It's Hot
Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head (This song is frequently voted highly in Greatest Song Of All Time lists in Australia. WHY??)
-
Wow, I was only away for about 3 days and I missed nominations. Too much uni work.
1. Are You Gonna Be My Girl
2. Here Comes The Sun
3. Six Months In A Leaky Boat
4. Bridge Over Troubled Water
5. Blackbird
6. Roxanne
7. Hallelujah
8. Down On The Corner
9. Should I Stay Or Should I Go
10. Children Of The Revolution
-
I think we'll all have to nominate some good 80s songs next time. It wasn't really that bad a decade.
Anyway, I'm happy with my nominations, Purple Haze and Nights In White Satin coming 5th and 7th. This is my favourite top ten so far.

I think I'll bump this thread just to add to my list and to see if anyone else will reply.
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Little Wing, Night Bird Flying, The Wind Cries Mary
The Who - Pinball Wizard, Squeeze Box, The Kids Are Alright, Who Are You
