The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin
Badge - Cream

Okay, I understand, and I apologise.
Darryl and Farin, it is entirely up to you when or whether this occurs. I wasn't expecting you to proceed if this was not a good time, and I understand that for that reason I shouldn't have posted this in public yet.
Also, I have an easier method for splitting the songs into groups of fifty that I think will work, but I won't mention it yet.

I have just been thinking about how many 60s music stars are still performing and recording music, and what an achievement it is to be popular for so long. I would like it if anyone could help me compile a list of any living music stars who have been recording or performing for more than forty years (Their first album/single they were involved in must have been released more than forty years ago). If they are still members of a band that formed more than forty years ago, please indicate this as I have shown below.
Paul McCartney
Ringo Starr
The Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts)
Bob Dylan
The Who (Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend)

AND, after much deliberation I decided not to count the votes for RonJon's nominations, because if he had voted, the Points for his Nos. 3 to 10 picks could well have changed the rest of the Top Ten. This probably makes me look indecisive, but I think it is the fairest way to go.
I had thought about this, and I completely agree. It causes a big advantage for the songs he put at 1 and 2, and a big disadvantage for those that would have been picked from 3-10.
Now I think it's time to remind you all about my original proposal of The Songfactors' Choice Ultimate Top Ten. I bring this up now because it seems to be a good time - we have 250 top ten songs now, so they can be split into 5 groups of 50, then the top tens from each group go through and get voted for in the ultimate top ten. Does anyone else agree that this is a good time, or are we going to delay it again?

My opinions on this subject can be summarised pretty easily with statistics.
In 2001, firearms were used to murder 6 people in New Zealand, 56 in Japan, 96 in Great Britain, 168 in Canada, and 331 in Germany. In comparison, firearms were used to murder 11,348 in the United States. For every time a gun is used in a home in a legally-justifiable shooting [note that every self-defense is legally justifiable] there are 22 criminal, unintentional, and suicide-relatedshootings.
I still haven't found exactly how many gun homicides per year occur in Australia, but I know for a fact the number is pretty much insignificant compared to the US.
I honestly don't care that some people have guns in Australia who probably shouldn't and yet I can't. The important thing is that the percentage of the population who are trigger happy gun owners here is much smaller than any country where guns are legal.

As for the additional list, I'm curious about Pretty Vegas. I like the song, and am glad INXS is back, but was that song really influential in some way?
I don't think is much to choose from in 2005. I don't know of any song that were particularly influential, so I chose one that was "significant" - being the first single released by a popular band whose new lead singer was chosen by reality TV.
Does anyone feel inclined to do the list for 1950-1964? I sure can't.

1. She's A Rainbow - The Rolling Stones
2. Who Are You - The Who
3. Across The Universe - The Beatles
4. Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers
5. We Will Rock You - Queen
6. Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
7. Band On The Run - Wings
8. Saturday In The Park - Chicago
9. 100 Years - Five For Fighting
10. Calling All Angels - Train
-
Excellent list, but I can't see why Van Halen's cover of "You Really Got Me" should be in there. I would have picked "Sultans Of Swing" by Dire Straits for 1978. This would be my continuation:
1992- "Come As You Are" - Nirvana
1993- "Creep" - Radiohead
1994- "Loser" - Beck
1995- "Wonderwall" - Oasis
1996- "Ironic" - Alanis Morrisette
1997- "Bittersweet Symphony" - The Verve
1998- "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" - Green Day
1999- "Learn To Fly" - Foo Fighters
2000- "Yellow" - Coldplay
2001- "Drops Of Jupiter" - Train
2002- "Lose Yourself" - Eminem
2003- "Hey Ya!" - Outkast
2004- "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" - Green Day
2005- "Pretty Vegas" - INXS
-
2. I Love Rock And Roll - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Are they all songs that have had popular cover versions? That's the only link I have found.

There is no way my 20 would fit on one CD. I'm pretty sure they would be over 2 hours alogether. I have put them in a CD order, trying to contrast between slower and faster songs
1. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses
2. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
3. Jumpin' Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones
4. Never Tear Us Apart - INXS
5. Champagne Supernova - Oasis
6. Badge - Cream
7. Alive - Pearl Jam
8. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-9) - Pink Floyd
9. Layla - Derek And The Dominoes
10. In My Life - The Beatles
11. Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
12. Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
13. Love Your Way - Powderfinger
14. Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
15. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
16. Dream On - Aerosmith
17. 25 Or 6 To 4 - Chicago
18. Hotel California - The Eagles
19. Khe Sanh - Cold Chisel
20. Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who

To all Pink Floyd fans - watch this video, especially if you haven't heard the song before. "High Hopes" by Pink Floyd
-
I don't really want to nominate too many Stones songs, but I really like this one:
She's A Rainbow - The Rolling Stones
Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers
-
My song of the day for today (aka "that song that always used to be near the top of the daily and weekly top tens"): "Tom Sawyer" by Rush
I love how this video always flips to Neil Peart during his fills - he is such an amazing drummer.
-
I'm interested in your signature. How should I interpret that?
Interpret it however you wish to do so. For those who don't know, it's similar to a quote from "Animal Farm" by George Orwell.
As for my slow internet connection, it's because we want to get broadband, but I just so happen to live in what is quite possibly the biggest broadband black spot in the developed world. I live only 10 kilometres/6 miles from the centre of the city of Perth, yet I still can't get either ADSL or cable broadband.
-
I certainly did realise there were other video threads, but hopefully this one will be more organised. Sometimes several songs get posted in one day on the other threads, and I don't have time to watch that many.
I'll watch yours when I get away from the ultra slow 56k connection I have at home.

This is a new idea I just came up with.
Anyone can find one song on YouTube that is one of their favourites, and post it here. It would be a good idea to choose a song that most people will probably like, and most people probably haven't heard before.
Since I have called the thread "Song/Video of the day", I suggest only one should be posted per day (have a look at the date and time at the top of each post. Don't worry about time zones - it doesn't really matter if two get posted in one day), since most of us don't have the time to watch several videos every day. As to who gets to post it - first come, first serve. I also recommend that we give everyone a fair go, so no one person should post a song here more than twice a week.
So here's the first Song Of The Day: "Innuendo" by Queen

Patience - Guns N' Roses (anytime soon I will nominate this for a Top Ten).
-
1. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses
2. Champagne Supernova - Oasis
3. Dazed And Confused - Led Zeppelin
4. No Rain - Blind Melon
5. Mmm, Mmm, Mmm, Mmm - Crash Test Dummies
6. I Love Rock'N'Roll - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
7. I Got You (I Feel Good) - James Brown
8. Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell
9. Stacy's Mom - Fountains Of Wayne
10. One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer - George Thorogood & Destroyers
-
Now I think I'll renominate a couple of songs other people nominated before.
Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses
Champagne Supernova - Oasis
-
1. Piano Man - Billy Joel (1973)
Interesting - I didn't think there would be enough Billy Joel fans here for this to get to no.1. I also didn't know the song was that old.
5. Friday on my Mind - The Easybeats (1967)I think that's the highest any Australian song has got so far.
10. Daydream Believer - The Monkees (1967)I guess adding the songs from the 0-9 top ten was a good idea then.
-
Among the other major artists who have yet to come to an agreement with iTunes are the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead and Garth Brooks.
Okay, so that explains why I found that iTunes didn't have a single song by several popular artists.
-
Lets see...down to 12 now, but it will take a while for me to decide which ones to leave out.
1. I Want You (She's So Heavy) - The Beatles
2. Khe Sanh - Cold Chisel
3. Friday On My Mind - The Easybeats
4. Summer Of '69 - Bryan Adams
5. Night Bird Flying - Jimi Hendrix
6. Takin' Care of Business - Bachman-Turner Overdrive
7. Piano Man - Billy Joel
8. 1979 - Smashing Pumpkins
9. Walk Of Life - Dire Straits
10. Daydream Believer - The Monkees
-
Arrgh! Too many great songs already.
Khe Sanh - Cold Chisel
Night Bird Flying - Jimi Hendrix

Somehow I knew something was wrong, but I couldn't work it out until now.
Two of my nominations (Last Goodbye and Every Rose Has Its Thorn) were completely overlooked. I should have realised after my other one (No One Knows) was originally overlooked. Oh well, too late now.

Deep Purple are two years short of the mark. Pink Floyd, while they have been together for about 42 years, their first single was released in March 1967.
I'm still unsure whether or not Jimmy Page or John Paul Jones can qualify. Robert Plant won't be able to qualify until 2009.
