Batman
I think a lot of people say they hate the Beatles when they actually just sort of dislike them. Because with the Beatles, if you don't think they're the greatest rock band of all time, you pretty much think they're overrated.
Batman
I'm sticking with Bob Marley, by the way. I've never met someone who really hates him, and of course there are tons of people who love him. Queen is (worldwide) probably the most popular band in rock history, but there are definitely people who hate them.
johnny
Because with the Beatles, if you don't think they're the greatest rock band of all time, you pretty much think they're overrated. 1) 75% of they're stuff is not rock 'n' roll 2) They are overrated. I really think they were lucky to be around at that time....even more lucky than Ringo being in that band....
Batman
I'm just saying that they're considered the greatest rock band of all time, so if you disagree with that statement you sort of think they're overrated by default.
c_s_1987
I'm sticking with my opinion that no band or artist in history has come even close to being "universally liked". Particularly because I don't know a single era of music where I haven't met someone who is completely ignorant of, and basically refuses to listen to any music from that era. Did that previous sentence make sense? It's quite hard to make that sentence fluent.
Batman
Oh yeah, I agree, I'm just asking what bands do you think have come closest to being universally liked.

They actually created "that time", so I don't think they were lucky. And Ringo may not be Dave Weckl, but he was the best drummer they could have had, as far as a "fit" goes. blind-fitter
2. They actually created "that time", so I don't think they were lucky. He's right, Das; if The Beatles hadn't come along until the late 70s or the early 90s, they would have totally missed the boat- they wouldn't have fitted in with the contemporary music scene at all. blind-fitter
Probably. I was just meaning that it was to their great fortune that they chanced along in the early 60s to find a huge teenage audience receptive to... that sort of thing, wasn't it? daslied
I suppose it was to their great fortune, but who knew what they would become...Can you imagine more recent "idol" bands reinventing pop music? Wait, then somebody might shoot Justin Timberlake in the mouth. *NSYNC is the greatest musical entity of all-time!!!!!
Tenacious_Peaches
Don't be talking smack about my beloved JT. And props for working in a Prometheus reference earlier.
blind-fitter
Dammit, man, I was expressing agreement with you, but in an obliquely comedic way. I thought you were smart, but it seems I may have misjudged you.

daslied
I know you were agreeing with me, man. I was simply musing on the subject to nobody in particular... blue_n_white
You two need to have more of a "structered" argument.Like quotes and stuff to prove your point.Or so I have been told. And name calling is kind of lame. But if you must do it,carry on!
daslied
What? We both used quotes, I believe. As far as the name-calling...that's what we do. It makes our friendship "special".

blue_n_white
I learned a new word today.Micturate. Can't wait for the wife to get home so I can use it in a sentence. I'm going to say "Honey, don't worry. I put the lid down on the toilet the last time I had to micturate."
johnny
2. They actually created "that time", so I don't think they were lucky. They were really the poster children of that "time". There were so many other issues going on and the just happened to be the soundtrack for it. And I'm not saying that didn't take talent, because it did, just not alot of musical talent. They had so much potential and wasted 70% of it on stupid, pop, boy-meets-girl love songs....
