The Songfactor's Choice Top Ten #83

Yep B-F, right on the money as usual.

Ian, since you like Get Me I suggest you start with EBTG's Amplified Heart Album/CD from 1994 which is actually one of their more acoustic endeavors.

Besides Get Me and the big hit, Missing it also includes some of my favorite EBTG songs like We Walk The Same Line, Troubled Mind, etc.

I believe I had/have a copy of their version of Night And Day B-F. Let me go look for it.

"Melting Pot" - Blue Mink (1969)

Touching idealism, great music, great style. ;)

Great song b-f !!! I have to make an appearance to say that.

It may not do all that well because I doubt that Blue Mink are known in the U.S. Pity ! This clip is a bit heavy on the organ/electric piano (?). It'll be in my Ten.

Thanks Ian, Lucky, edna and others who keep in touch with me by email. :)

CONGRATULATIONS MARTIN on becoming a Moderator.

Hi Sweetie. :)

Just a flying visit to promote 'Melting Pot'. A charming little 70s song protesting against racism. Unfortunately, some of the lyrics would be considered racist now ! It was later covered by Boy Beorge & Culture Club. Not to be confused with the John Mellencamp or Pitbull offerings.

Take a pinch of white man

Wrap him up in black skin

Add a touch of blue blood

And a little bitty bit of red Indian boy

Oh like a Curly Latin kinkies

Oh Lordy, Lordy, mixed with yellow Chinkees, yeah

You know you lump it all together

And you got a recipe for a get along scene

Oh what a beautiful dream

If it could only come true, you know, you know

What we need is a great big melting pot

Big enough enough enough to take

The world and all its got And keep it stirring for a hundred years or more

And turn out coffee coloured people by the score

Rabbis and the friars

Vishnus and the gurus

We got the Beatles or the Sun God

Well it really doesn't matter what religion you choose

And be thankful little Mrs. Graceful

You know that livin' could be tasteful

We should all get together in a lovin machine

I think I'll call up the Queen

It' s only fair that she knows, you know, you know

What we need is a great big melting pot

Big enough enough enough to take

The world and all its got And keep it stirring for a hundred years or more

And turn out coffee coloured people by the score

I had no idea that "Melting Pot" wasn't a hit in the States. It's so very American.

I kinda thought it was a song which might have "universal appeal". I remember it from my early childhood, and have always found it highly entertaining.

I would suggest that it doesn't so much "protest against racism" as "embrace the concept of multi-culturalism". That it does so in such risibly naive and outmoded (politically incorrect) terms merely adds to its quaint charm. ;)

some fun facts:

- it was their first release after their reunion in 1993

- it was their first ever political song

- it's probably the most famous anti-fascist song in Germany, and I dare to say that everybody below the age of 35 can at least sing the chorus :)

[spoilerq:1]translation of the lyrics[/spoilerq]

[spoilera:1]You are really stupid

That's why you feel so good,

Hate is your grand attitude

Your blood is always boiling,

Everything must be explained to you 'cause

You don't know a single thing.

Most likely you even don't know

What the word 'attitude' means

Your violence is just a silent cry for love

Your Jump Boots(1) long for tenderness,

You never learned how to articulate yourself,

And your parents never had time for you

...ohhh

a**hole!

Why are you afraid of carressing,

what's with all this nonsense?

Under the laurel wreath bound with acorns,

I know there beats a heart,

And romance isn't just dull theory to you

Between "Störkraft" and the "Onkelz" hovers a Kuschelrock LP!(2)

Your violence is just a silent cry for love

Your Jump Boots long for tenderness,

You never learned how to articulate yourself,

And your parents never had time for you

...ohhh

a**hole!

Because you've got problems

nobody wants to know about,

Just because you're afraid to hug,

You're a fascist.

You don't have to lash your selfhatred

on to others,

So that no one realizes

what a nice guy you are(3)

ohhh...

Your violence is just a silent cry for love

Your Jump Boots long for tenderness,

You never learned how to articulate yourself,

And your girlfriend never had time for you

...ohhh...

a**hole! a**hole! a**hole!

(1) - Jump Boots are part of the typical Neo-Nazi "uniform"

(2) - "Störkraft" and the "Böhse Onkelz" are extreme right-wing or downright neo-nazi rock bands

- "Kuschelrock LPs" (Snuggle Rock) are compilations of romantic Soft Rock songs

(3) - in current versions this is changed from "nice guy" to "stupid pig", probably for people who never heard of sarcasm ;):P[/spoilera]
