MindCrime
Led Zeppelin's version of "Babe I'm Going To Leave You" could be better than the original Joan Baez version.

The Gutless Wonder
Dunno if this has been mentioned but the Manics versions of Umbrella, Pennyroyal Tea, Been A Son are better than the originals in my opinion.
Tenacious_Peaches
Top 10 Cover Songs That Outshine The Original agree? disagree? I disagree a thousand times over with Gary Jules' cover of Mad World. Horse bleep, I tell you. And Sinead can kiss my foot. The Family's original version of Nothing Compares 2 U is spectacular, although maybe 7 people on this earth besides me have heard it. I have never heard Tricky's version of Black Steel. I don't know if it's better, but it's pretty freaking cool.
Heard It On The XM
"Once Bitten, Twice Shy". Ian Hunter's original version was clunky and awkward. Great White took that song and made it their own. I'm amazed I forgot to mention that one in my first post back on the first page of the thread, and even more amazed that no one else here has picked up on it instead. Lucky
Top 10 Cover Songs That Outshine The Original agree? disagree? They credit Alphaville with the original "Forever Young"? Is that the same song I'm thinking of? Then no, no no, to either! And Petshop Boys with the best version of Always on My Mind? I don't think so. I love the Great White version, by the way, of Once Bitten ....

bazooka
Lonely Avenue -- The Animals I had listened to this cover version from the Animals' under-noticed 1977 reunion album Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted and then, maybe just last year, I heard Ray Charles' 1956 original. _Laurie_
This one is on my PTT...Little Feat did this when I saw them a little while ago. I never knew this song till then...I found a version by Buddy Guy, and I absolutely love this version of the song. I think Bonnie Raitt does the back up vocals on this version too...Original by John Hiatt, which I also love. bazooka
Y'all probably know Santana's Black Magic Woman , but have you heard the original by Peter Green & Fleetwood Mac of '68. It's like Santana took 'er to Charm School. You can judge if that treatment made for an improvement.

Farin
against the purpose of this thread I'm going to post an original song, which has been covered hundreds of times, but I don't know if you ever heard this: Die Moritat von Mackie Messer sung by Bertold Brecht himself (... even though he wasn't really a good singer )
MindCrime
^^ There seems to be a debate on who the singer is of the song, in the comments.
Farin
^^ There seems to be a debate on who the singer is of the song, in the comments. yes, one person suggested that instead of Brecht, it's actually Kurt Gerron singing, who originally sang the song in the Threepenny Opera... but the original uploader replied with: "No. I also know the recording with Kurt Gerron but this was sung by brecht."
