The well-known songs from this album are "I'm Like A Bird" "Turn Off The Light" and "S--- On The Radio (Remember The Days)". Nelly is Canadian, but of Portuguese descent, so the whole album has a world music flavor. It reminds me of summer all year long. Laid-back, smooth, exotic. Besides the three tracks mentioned, I would recommend "Party" and "Trynna Find A Way".

How about Chicago's first album...The Chicago Transit Authority. It stayed on the charts for 171 weeks and featured the sounds that made Chicago a household name for years to come.

Terry Kath was a monster guitar player and a favorite of Jimi Hendrix. the big Chicago hits would be in their future, but this album created a high baseline for them to feed off:

Track listing

"Introduction" (Terry Kath) – 6:35

"Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" (Robert Lamm) – 4:35

"Beginnings" (Lamm) – 7:54

"Questions 67 and 68" (Lamm) – 5:03

"Listen" (Lamm) – 3:22

"Poem 58" (Lamm) – 8:35

"Free Form Guitar" (Kath) – 6:47

"South California Purples" (Lamm) – 6:11

"I'm A Man" (Jimmy Miller/Steve Winwood) – 7:43

Trivia: Chicago's versions of this song do not feature the lyrics as written, but as the band misunderstood them.

"Prologue, August 29, 1968" (James William Guercio) – 0:58

Actual field recording of protesters chanting "The whole world's watching!" during the 1968 Democratic Convention

"Someday (August 29, 1968)" (Lamm/James Pankow) – 4:11

"Liberation" (Pankow) – 14:38

A live in-studio performance with no overdubs

Ahh excellent, once more then!

[big]A NORTHERN SOUL - The Verve[/big]

northernsoultr4.jpg

"A New Decade" – 4:11

"This Is Music" – 3:35

"On Your Own" – 3:33

"So It Goes" – 6:11

"A Northern Soul" – 6:32

"Brainstorm Interlude" – 5:11

"Drive You Home" – 6:41

"History" – 5:26

"No Knock on My Door" – 5:11

"Life's an Ocean" – 5:43

"Stormy Clouds" – 5:34

"(Reprise)" – 6:11

Urbam Hymns is a positively brilliant album worthy of numerous  s. But this one - A Northern Soul - is like the rough cut. Sure it isn't as flawless and if you listen to Urban Hymns first, it takes some getting used to. But it's their most human album. History was the first song by the Verve to make use of a string arrangement and that was a pretty successful tactic given the success of the song as well as of Bittersweet Symphony and The Drugs Don't Work on the next album. The band recorded this album completely strung out on ecstasy. Following the recording, there were some disagreements between Richard Ashcroft and Nick McCabe and they disbanded. They managed to settle their differences long enough to record Urban Hymns (phew!  ) I love this album for the music and I love it for the lyrics. Not many people know of the Verve beyond Urban Hymns, but this one of theirs is definitely underrated.

I think this review from Amazon sums up the album quite well:

apart from that, the official review is:

The Verve is brilliant!

I don't usually nominate, but, as I am ryansgirl, and Ryan Adams has never made it, I am nominating his latest-Easy Tiger. Easy Tiger is a pastiche of all Ryan's musical styles and is easily his best album so far.

15. "Surf Rider" performed by The Lively Ones – 3:18

16. "Ezekiel – 25:17" (dialogue) – 0:52

The soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's darkly funny crime classic Pulp Fiction manages to re-create the film's wildly careening sense of style, violence, and humor by concentrating on the surf music that comprises the bulk of the movie's incidental music and adding a few sexy oldies integral to the film's story ("Let's Stay Together," "Son of a Preacher Man," "You Never Can Tell"). Of course, the inclusion of dialogue and Urge Overkill's seductive cover of Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" doesn't hurt either.
