hazeldavis
Hello!! Can anyone help me - I am trying to find songs which hit the mainstream which have subversive or cleverly-disguised rude lyrics - such as YMCA, Ebenezer Good, Relax, etc. I have a lot of drug ones but there must be some political ones. Can anyone help???
Uncle Joe
First you'll have to explain to me what "subversive or cleverly-disguised rude lyrics" there were in YMCA.
Levis
^ I've heard that about the YMCA too. There She Goes by The La's is supposedly a song about heroin. After reading the lyrics perhaps it doesn't seem subversive any more but it came as a surprise to me There She Goes - The La's There she goes There she goes again Racing through my brain And I just can't contain This feeling that remains There she goes There she goes again Pulsing through my veins And I just can't contain This feeling that remains There she goes (There she goes again) There she goes again (There she goes again) Racing through my brain (There she goes) And I just can't contain This feeling that remains There she goes There she goes again She calls my name she pulls my train No one else could heal my pain And I just can't contain This feeling that remains There she goes (She calls my name) There she goes again (She calls my name) Chasing down my lane (She calls my name) And I just can't contain This feeling that remains There she goes (There she goes again) There she goes (There she goes again) There she goes There she goes There she goes again Racing through my brain And I just can't contain This feeling that remains There she goes There she goes again Pulsing through my veins And I just can't contain This feeling that remains There she goes (There she goes again) There she goes again (There she goes again) Racing through my brain (There she goes) And I just can't contain This feeling that remains There she goes There she goes again She calls my name she pulls my train No one else could heal my pain And I just can't contain This feeling that remains There she goes (She calls my name) There she goes again (She calls my name) Chasing down my lane (She calls my name) And I just can't contain This feeling that remains There she goes (There she goes again) There she goes (There she goes again) There she goes

johnnyguitar
The Velvet Underground's 'Heroin' was about heroin, apparently...as was White Light, White Heat. Alice Cooper's 'I eat babies, me' was a satyrical attempt to subvert baby consumption in eastern Europe and was similar in tone to the Whitesnake classic 'Slide It In', which, despite its lyrical subtlety, actually had a strong sexual subtext. Otokichi
Then there's that canard about "The Candy Man" being about a dope pusher. (Sammy Davis Jr. did a drug song!?) A long time ago, during the 60's, a college friend stated that "Happiness is a Warm Gun" was about a Heroin addict. (The Beatles did a drug song!?) A cop's wife recalled getting jazzed over "Crystal Blue Persuasion," which she did...in high school. The Silent Majority got bent out of shape by The Byrds' "Eight Miles High," but that's another story...
Earth-Angel
Most songs can be twisted and overanalysed to contain anything you want them to.
c_s_1987
Most songs can be twisted and overanalysed to contain anything you want them to. Absolutely. I've heard rumours that Pinball Wizard is about cocaine, which is absolutely ridiculous, considering the fact that the song lyrics fit in well with the rest of Tommy. rockstar-101
I heard that Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin is about sex (the songfacts page for the song confirm that). Is that what you mean?

It´s said that "Perfect Day" (Lou Reed) is about heroin. I don´t believe it, Lou Reed also wrote songs not related to drugs or transverstites... (well, maybe not much, but he did)
