Mama

First of all I want to wish all of you wonderful Mommies here on Songfacts a truly

Happy Mothers' Day.

You deserve it for all you do.

There are hundreds of songs dedicated to Mama.

Probably the most requested song on the radio this time of year is I'll Always Love My Mama by The Intruders. (you only get one, you only get one, yeah)

One of my personal favorites is Paul Simon's Loves Me Like A Rock.

Some other good ones off the top of my head are:

Mama Said-The Shirelles (Mama said there'd be days like this, there'll be days like this my Mama said)

Shop Around-Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (Pretyy girls are a dime a dozen, don't be fooled by the very first one)

Only The Strong Survive-Jerry Butler (Boy, I see you sittin' there all alone Crying your eyes out Cause the woman that you love is gone You know there's gonna be A whole lot of trouble in your life So, listen to me, get up off your knees'Cause only the strong survive) Now that's some great advice!

Then there're also some maudlin (forgive me) songs like:

Mama-Connie Francis and My Mother's Eyes-Frankie Valli.

Then there are songs I've heard of but never heard (probably never will) like:

Stacy's Mom-Fountains of Wayne, the Merle Haggard Country tune, Mama Tried (That leaves only me to blame, cause Mama tried), and let's not overlook the rappers...Emeinem's, Cleaning Out My Closet or My Mom by Chocolate Thunder about a mom with Alzheimer's (My Mom, sweet Mom, she didn't remember my name) and of course Tupac Shakur's, Dear Mama (And even as a crack fiend, you always was a black queen....you always was committed, a poor single woman on welfare, tell me how you did it). (sigh)

How about listing some of your favorite Mother Songs and telling why you like 'em?

This is a cut from one of his "Best Of ..." albums. I used to listen to this so closely to catch his subtle phrasing, pauses and emphasis, of which he was master and made almost any song he sang extremely emotive.

(Hey ... there's even a reference to Uncle Joe in this song!)

Mama - Roy Orbison

(Roy Orbison/Joe Melton/Ray Rush)

Mama

Just had to call

Oh, mama

Your baby boy

Just had his heart

Broken in two

She said we're through

But to send her best to you

Oh, mama

I'd like to run to you

Mama

I'd come home today

Leave right away

But things won't work that way

Gotta stay, be a man

If I can

Mama

Oh, mom

I don't know

I called her tonight

No, not at home

Yeah, you're probably right

Yes I'll take care of myself

No I'll be alright

I'll go to bed early tonight

Oh, Mama

Tell Dad I think of him

Mama

How's Uncle Joe?

My puppy Coco?

Tell them hello

Oh, better go

But gosh, I loved her so

Mama

Don't worry so much

Darling mama

Now mama don't cry

Just say goodbye

Can't have us both in tears

Now mom, you know me

Yes I'll always be

Your baby through all those years

Sadie ~ The Spinners

In a world like today

Its a rare occasion to be able

To see young mothers like the ones

That were around when I grew up

But they live on in memory

To quite a few of us

And this song is dedicated

To those who cherish that memory

Early one Sunday morning

Breakfast was on the table

There was no time to eat

She said to me, Boy, hurry to Sunday school

Filled with her load of glory

We learned the Holy story

Shell always have her dreams

Despite the things this troubled world can bring

Oh, Sadie

Dont you know we love you

Sweet Sadie

Place no one above you

Sweet Sadie (Well, well, well)

Living in the past

Some times it seems so funny

But no money will turn your life around

Sweeter than cotton candy

Stronger than papas old brandy

Always that needed smile

Once in awhile she would break down and cry

Some times shed be so happy

Just being with us and daddy

Standing the worst of times

Breaking the binds with just a simple song

Oh, Sadie (Oh, Sadie, baby)

Dont you know we love you (Shell love us all in a special way)

Sweet Sadie (Well, well, well)

Place no one above you

Sweet Sadie (Sweet Sadie livin in the past)

Living in the past

Oh, shes never sinnin

In love shes always winnin, yeah

Sadie (My, my, my, my, my)

Dont you know we love you (I love you, mama)

Sweet Sadie

Place no one above you (I just cant forget)

Sweet Sadie (How you gave me love, oh, Lord)

Living in the past

If theres a heaven up above

I know shes teaching angels how to love

Sadie (Its a mean world without you)

Dont you know we love you

Sweet Sadie (All the love you showed)

Place no one above you

I still cry everytime I hear this song, just wonderufl. Beautiful lyrics.

From "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

The Cox Family

I am Weary (Let Me Rest)

Kiss me mother kiss your darlin'

Lay my head upon your breast

Throw your loving arms around me

I am weary let me rest

Seems the light is swiftly fading

Brighter scenes they do now show

I am standing by the river

Angels wait to take me home

Kiss me mother kiss your darlin'

See the pain upon my brow

While I'll soon be with the angels

Fate has dimmed my future now

Through the years you've always loved me

And my life you've tried to save

But now I shall slumber sweetly

In a deep and lonely grave

Kiss me mother kiss your darlin'

Lay my head upon your breast

Throw your loving arms around me

I am weary let me rest

I am weary let me rest

John Lennon

Half of what I say is meaningless

But I say it just to reach you

Julia

Julia

Julia

Oceanchild

Calls me

So I sing a song of love

Julia

Julia

Seashell eyes

Windy smile

So I sing a song of love

Julia

Her hair of floating sky is shimmering

Glimmering

In the sun

Julia

Julia

Morning moon

Touch me

So I sing a song of love

Julia

When I cannot sing my heart

I can only speak my mind

Julia

Julia

Sleeping sand

Silent cloud

Touch me

So I sing a song of love

Julia

Calls me

So I sing a song of love

For Julia

Julia

Julia

------

Mother, you had me but I never had you,

I wanted you but you didn't want me,

So I got to tell you,

Goodbye, goodbye.

Farther, you left me but I never left you,

I needed you but you didn't need me,

So I got to tell you,

Goodbye, goodbye.

Children, don't do what I have done,

I couldn't walk and I tried to run,

So I got to tell you,

Goodbye, goodbye.

Mama don't go,

Daddy come home.

Mama don't go,

Daddy come home.

Mama don't go,

Daddy come home.

Mama don't go,

Daddy come home.

Mama don't go,

Daddy come home.

Mama don't go,

Daddy come home.

Mama don't go,

Daddy come home...

and...

Mama Tried - written by Merle Haggard performed by many including Johnny Cash but perhaps best done by The Everly Brothers

The first thing I remember knowing,

Was a lonesome whistle blowing,

And a young un's dream of growing up to ride;

On a freight train leaving town,

Not knowing where I'm bound,

No one could change my mind but Mama tried.

One and only rebel child,

From a family, meek and mild:

My Mama seemed to know what lay in store.

Despite all my Sunday learning,

Towards the bad, I kept on turning.

'Til Mama couldn't hold me anymore.

And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole.

No one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried.

Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied.

That leaves only me to blame 'cos Mama tried.

Dear old Daddy, rest his soul,

Left my Mom a heavy load;

She tried so very hard to fill his shoes.

Working hours without rest,

Wanted me to have the best.

She tried to raise me right but I refused.

And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole.

No-one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried.

Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied.

That leaves only me to blame 'cos Mama tried.
