The Songfactors' Choice Top Ten #61

Recommended Posts

For my buddy, Fintan, here's your own personal...

MUSICAL INTERLUDE:

"You can't always get it

when you really want it

You can't always get it at all

Just because there's space

In your life it's a waste

To spend your time why don't you wait for the call?

Just gotta get used to it

We all get it in the end

Just gotta get used to it

We go down and we come up again

Just gotta get used to it

You irritate me my friend

This is no social crisis

This is you havin' fun

No crisis

Gettin' burned by the sun

This is true

This is no social crisis

Just another tricky day for you

You can't always get higher

Just because you aspire

You could expire even knowin'

Don't push the hands

Just hang on to the band

And you can dance while your knowledge is growing

It could happen anytime

You can't expect to never cry

Patience is priceless

Not when you try to fly so high

Just stay on that line

Rock'n roll will never die

This is no social crisis

This is you havin' fun

No crisis

Gettin' burned by the sun

This is true

This is no social crisis

Just another tricky day for you

Another tricky day

Another gently nagging pain

What the papers say

Just seems to bring down heavier rain

The world seems in a spiral

Life seems such a worthless title

But break out and start a fire y'all

It's all here on the vinyl

No crisis

Just you havin' fun

There's no crisis

Gettin' burned by the sun

Got no crisis, this is true

This is no social crisis

Just another tricky day for you

You can't always get it

When you really want it

You can't always get it at all

Just because there's space

In your life it's a waste

To spend your time why don't you wait for the call?

Just gotta get used to it

Gotta get used to waiting

Just gotta get used to it

You know how the ice is

Just gotta get used to it

It's thin where you're skating

This is no social crisis

This is you havin' fun

No crisis

Gettin' burned by the sun

This is true

This is no social crisis

Just another tricky day for you

Fella

Just another tricky day for you

Just another tricky day for you

Just another tricky day

Just another tricky day for you"

YES!!!!!

Ron, why do you think Russell wrote JJF? Of course he didn´t... it´s a J/R song... he did a good cover at the Bangladesh concert, yes... but he didn´t write it.

So close...but so far! That's ok, Stones at #1 and #2? What could be better? S'only fitting!! Sammy's right "STONES RULE!"

Leon Russell may be one of the most underrated singer/songwriters of all time because he can't sing very well. His version of this, his own song, did squat; while the voice of Jagger carried it to number one.

I have to disagree with you Ron. Not about "Jumpin Jack Flash", yes, thats a Jagger/Richards song all the way. About Leon's singing ability. I think he sings wonderfully. No one does his compositions as well as he does. As with Dylan, I call his voice distinctive. It has a quality that displays his words to perfection. I'll be nominating a Leon Russell song, composed and sung by the master!

Something had 98 points and Hotel California 95. Both were #2 beaten by Bohemian Rhapsody and You Really Got Me (nominated by me!!)

Thanks for the great info Dappled. :)

I nominated 'Something' in Top Ten #40 (my last Beatles' nomination).

So that means I'M the Biggest Loser

I guess I figured that if he sang it, he wrote it. I stand corrected, chastened and bow to the great group here at SF for watching my back.

And to Lucky, I actually DO like Leon's voice (I own his classic "Shelter People" vinyl album with the egg carton sleeve - one of my prized possessions), but feel many do not, ala Bob Dylan. (Good analogy) Maybe I like both those guys cause they make me feel like I can sing a little. lol "Stranger In A Strange Land" is one of my favorites of Leon's vocals. I also very much liked his version of J/R's Jack Flash. But he doesn't come cose to Cocker's cover of Russell's "Delta Lady" nor many of his stuff's other covers by various artists, such as "Superstar", "Masquarade" or "I'm Singing This Song For You."

Leon Russell is truly an original. A great songwriter, with a great bluesy voice. He also led the band on Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs And Englishmen recording. I believe Delta Lady was written about Rita Coolidge.

 I love you guys!

Phil, I have heard that also, about Rita Coolidge. Now that I know of at least a couple other Leon lovers, I do believe I will nominate something by him. My all time favorite: Back To The Island. Close second: a tie between A Song For You and Lady Blue.

Benson's cover is wonderful, though I like Leon's. That may be the only one that I like the cover better. I've got (or rather had) most of his original work. I've been a huge fan since the early 70's! So many people have recorded his music, but for the most part, I like his own versions the best.

Funny, we're talking about someone not even nominated in this ten... :)

Joe, you have my vote for 'Superstar' also, if you choose to nominate it sometime. In fact I'd vote for just about any Carpenters' song. I like their version of 'This Masquerade' too - as well as George's of course. I haven't heard Leon Russel's, who was of course romantically attached to the 'Delta Lady', Rita Coolidge. She recorded the first version of 'Superstar' (maybe someone else already said that).

Leon interlude:

I'm up on the tightrope

one side's hate and one is hope

It's a circus game with you and me.

I'm up on the tightwire

linked by life and the funeral pyre

But the top hat on my head is all you see.

And the wire seems to be the only place for me

A comedy of errors and I'm falling

Like a rubber neck giraffe, you look into my past

Well, baby you're just to blind to see.

I'm up in the spotlight

oh does it feel right

The altitude seems to really get to me.

I'm up on the tightwire

linked by life and the funeral pyre

Putting on a show for you to see.
